Possibly the worst Fighting Fantasy book in the series – save for the illustrations, which are amazing. The rules are completely different from any other FF title out there. They have potential, but require much better balance. The story is complete lunacy, which wouldn’t be too bad if the design wasn’t a linear slugfest. Kill every single zombie? Really Ian? Yes, that’s right, so be prepared to run into every chainsaw, every grenade and every mob of zombies, otherwise you might miss a zombie trapped in a meat freezer.
Otto the jailor seems to have a lot in common with Ian, because the way Otto treats you in the cell runs parallel with how Ian treats the reader in real life.
‘As often is the case, Otto (Ian) is drunk and looking forward to playing his usual game of placing your bowl of cold stew (reward) just out of reach before giving you a good kick’.
This solution is based on the reprint, which gives the player 2D6+20 Stamina. Note that the rules do not mention a cap on your Stamina – use Med Kits immediately. Unfortunately even with 32 Stamina you have literally zero chance of succeeding. This book is impossible to complete without a further modification of the rules.
You start with:
- Barehanded (D6-3 Damage). - 2D6+20 Stamina.
- Wait to talk to him when he next enters your cell. - Go for his body. - Interrogate him (for some story). - Walk to the open doorway. - Take ‘Hendrix’ Bag. - Finish off Otto’s meal. - Add 2 Stamina. - Open the box. - Take Small Penknife (D6-2 Damage). - Take $15. - Open the pouch. - Take Small Key ‘9’. - Stay & talk to the men. - You have some dollars & wish to buy something. - Pay for the information (-$10). - Ask Boris if there is anything in the storeroom which could be of use to you. - Take Steel Pulley (-$1). - Take Hack Saw (-$1). - Ask Boris if he has any provisions. - Add 3 Stamina. - Go left. - Open the door. - Open the kit bag. - Take Sports Clothes. - Take Baseball Bat (D6 Damage). - Fight 2 Zombies. - Killed 2 Zombies (2). - Take Med Kit (+4 Stamina when used). - Take Box of Bullets. - Take Box of Bullets. - Open it. - Take $2. - Take Box of Bullets. - Look behind it. - Squeeze yourself along it. - Fight 8 Zombies. - Killed 8 Zombies (10). - Take Blacksmith’s Tongs. - Open the door. - You have a key. Turn to Para 9. - Search through the pile of coal. - Take Rope & Grappling Hook. - Search the boiler room. - Add 2 Stamina. - Fight 3 Zombies. - Killed 3 Zombies (13). - Take Crowbar (D6). - Fight 4 Zombies. - Killed 4 Zombies (17). - Take Pistol (D6+2). - Prise the lid off the crate. - You possess a crowbar. - Take Grenade (2D6+1 Damage). - Take Grenade (2D6+1 Damage). - Lift the manhole cover. - Climb down the shaft. - Fight 15 Mutant Sewer Rats. - Fight 2 Zombies. - Killed 2 Zombies (19). - Take Gold Locket with Gold Chain. - You have a hack saw & want to cut through the iron bars. - Fish the bottle out of the water. - Take Yellow Notepaper ‘181’. - Inspect the paintings. - Inspect the portrait more closely. - Look behind the portrait. - Open it. - Take Shotgun (D6+5 Damage). - Take Shotgun Cartridge. - Take Shotgun Cartridge. - Take Shotgun Cartridge. - Take Shotgun Cartridge. - Take Box of Bullets. - Take Box of Bullets. - Go left along the hallway. - Open the door. - Take 1 Damage. - Fight 1 Zombie. - Killed 1 Zombie (20). - Take Brass Key ‘111’. - Fight 12 Zombies. Zombies deal X2 Damage. - Killed 12 Zombies (32). - Take Axe (D6 Damage). - Go left. - Open the door. - Open some of the boxed games. - You have a Brass Key. And that's it! All 65 Fighting Fantasy books completed with solutions (plus the sorcery books, making a total of 69).
Probably the biggest thing I've ever done for free, really happy with myself for sticking with it & not giving up.
What will I do now? My list of stuff to keep me busy:
- Heavy Metal Thunder (loving it so far) - Warlock Magazine Adventures - Fighting Fantazine Adventures - The Cretan Chronicles
Special thanks to Paltogue - those likes gave me some extra motivation, and Sylas for his insight into several of the harder books.
Dazaak, consider the BOTZ solution as an early Christmas present
Cheers and Merry Christmas all,

Wonderful joke but I am not troll-like so I post in an upfront manner if I think a path or choice raises a question mark.
As to the request for the 5 amulets solution I am not sure this is a good idea in the spirit of Scorpion Swamp and, it seems to me, could be quite tricky. The solutions from Champskees and JB are only slightly different and deliver a likely victory. The difference between us is whether to choose a curse/fight or a luck roll. People can make up their own minds. My preference is because Mistress Of Birds says it a matter of who you are serving rather than being of evil alignment hence only killing one master.
There is something perverse in slogging through the swamp for all 5 amulets and then killing Grimslade. Spite your face territory?

If someone sends them to me I'll do them (you will get them back of course). Had all four of the Goldhawk books. Loved them, particularly Mudworm Swamp. Great way to introduce younger readers into the fold. Don't think a walkthrough is necessary for them though.

Any chance you could give us a hint which books gave you the most trouble, and whether you cheated or tweaked some things on certain ones where the odds are absurdly satcked against the reader from the start (many of Livingstone titles, like 'Crypt Of The Sorcerer' for instance). And how about which ones you love best, but also which ones that gave you the most satisfying experience to read, play and complete, which may not necessarily be the same thing. And finally, what enemies you liked best, and what books had the cleverest, most devious sections-not necessariuly out of piss-taking difficulty, but just useful stuff expertly hidden, or whole sections you can miss easily by just one decision that takes you well away from many areas without you knowing it. To my mind, two of the least heralded but loveliest books-'Demons Of The Deep' and 'Portal Of Evil' fall into this. The former gets you to the so-called end real wuickly as it's easy to miss out many confrontations or places to explore. I always so a point of doing everything it allows me to as I love the book and want it to last. 'Portal Of Evil' is even clever as I relaised after a while there was a whole early section, comprising loads of things to experience, that follow one from one simple thing, instead of going utterly ill-prepared into a forest you know nothing about, or a town you can't even pay to be in. Wonder if you can say how many attempts you give the books before you give up, or won through finally and how many you've really completed.

I don't think I'll get this boook. As unlike 'House Of Hell' as a proper horror set on planet earth should be, this looks like it reeks of the stupid and utterly bemusing obsession kids have today with the Hollywood kind of zom,bie-i.e not a zombie at all but a demented human psycho acting like a twat as he goes around biting everyone else and making them all like him for no reason. Cannibals not zombies. It seems silly Livingstone mentioned he'd never done a book "soley about them" before like it was always something he meant do. They're just painfully slow corpses, about the most useless undead you can get. This book looks the most boring of the lot. Nothing but zombie after zombie (or human cannibals even-see the Hollywood thing again as to how all "zombies" have ever been presented on film). Ian had barely done a book without a zombie anyway-he had loads in 'Crypt' and even more in 'Trial'. And there's usually one shambling about in all his others, save for 'Island Of The Lizard King' as there's no call for them out there!
He's never done a book about all the Dungeons&Dragons copyright monsters (Gorgons, Sahuagins, Merrows, Beholders, Bugbears, Displacer Beasts, Flumphs, Xorns etc.) cos he and Jackson can't, he's never done books solely on anything, except Lizard Men kind of, and even then there were numerous other beings (Sabre-Tooth Tiger, Giant Crab, Giant Lizard, Spit Toad, Pirates, Cyclops, Brown Bear, Razorjaw etc.) to keep it interesting anyway. But a load of cannibals beginning with the letter Z-and then not even proper cannibals either. Jesus, THIS is the book he's been waiting ages to give us! Talk about superfluous and unnecessary. We've got films, TV shows and every other computer games to give this crap to us, we don't their books to do it too. Bet this is on par with that 'Creature Of Havoc' thing and all the hateful and pointless space ones. God to have the past back when fantasy meant fantasy and vareiety was the name of the bleeding arse game too.

Blood of the Zombies is broken and unwinnable when playing by the rules. However, the mobile app version has a "medium" difficulty setting where the player character starts with 2 Dice + 40 stamina and there are more med kits than in the printed version. In print, that could actually be winnable, though difficult.

At the very least, two dice plus 60 points. That's just in terms of the starting stamina.
Another way of making it playable would be by adding a lot of med kits. Perhaps another ten med kits.

Oh man what a joke. All of this together with the fact that the enemies are just normal zombies, rarely special or unusual, and that there's even less stats than usual, just goes to show what a terrible designer Livingstone is.

I did like how unashamedly he ripped off Mind Flayers with Brain Slayers.

I have two questions about this seemingly impossible book: 1. Can grenades be used at any time? 2. Are the attack dogs at 326 meant to have a damage of 2? The dogs at 143 only do 1 damage.
|
|
|
Post by Jon on Dec 11, 2016 22:02:09 GMT
Yes, the dogs in 326 definitely cause 2 damage, it says so explicitly.
The exact rules about grenades are ambiguous. I would say that you can use them whenever you have the option to use a gun. Against Yurr and the scientists you cannot use your gun, so I suppose you cannot reach for your grenades either. Otherwise, why not? It's your choice what weapon you use and the grenades are on your belt, so you can't lose them.

Back on topic - a way of making the rules of Blood of the Zombies fair without making the storyline even more ridiculous than it already is, would be to introduce body armour. I have worked out a way that it could be deployed so as to make the book winnable, but still with a level of challenge.
Here are my changes to the rules:
1) If the player makes friends with Boris and Gregor, then Boris gives the player character some body armour in the store room, which halves the stamina damage that the zombies do to the player character in battle (rounding fractions up).
2) The flak jacket should reduce the total stamina damage the player character receives in battle by a third. So if they already have body armour, then this would mean that the stamina they loose in battle or to zombie knives, axes or fists etc. is only a third of what it states in the text. Fractions should then be rounded up or down to the nearest stamina point.
3) The player character should keep all grenades attached to their belt and be able to use them at any time, except in the struggle against Yurr. This is just tidying up the ambiguously presented rules about grenades in the text. Sometimes the player character can clip the grenades to their belt, other times the game forgets about this. The player should be allowed to use a grenade against zombie Roznik and his colleague, because that unsavoury pair had not wrestled the player character to the ground like Yurr does.
With these changes to the rules the player character can prevail, but it is still not certain that they will.
My first way of making it winnable was by making the player character's initial stamina ridiculously high, but that would be very silly. It would mean that the player was Ben Grimm or the She-hulk or something.

Lots more health regeneration opportunities would also have been great, but I'm not even sure this goes far enough. I think gamebooks should be easier the more linear they are, so as to offset the reduction in replay value. I think this book should have been VERY easy, but instead I just got slaughtered trying to play by the rules. So on that basis I think that (on top of your idea) Boris should have just told me where all the zombies were, loaded me up with enough weapons to make Schwarzenegger gasp, and THEN sent me on my way.
