This is a thread for general discussion about the FF franchise - its history, current state, future, etc.

What IS the current state of FF do you think? There aren't any more gamebooks in the pipeline as far as we know, but there is some activity from Arion games and in terms of conversion of the adventures to various interactive digital formats. Anything else going on or not going on?

More like not going on. But good things are stirring like crazy over at Sparkfurnace (Dave Morris and co.) and even Lone Wolf is not dead yet, might even pick up some steam with Mantikore at the helm, who knows? So maybe that will stir the granddaddy of it all into action once more.
Now the question is where's JH Brennan at? Still alive? His books could used new releases with proofreading...

JH Brennan's stuff is coming out as apps from Tin Man Games at some point next year. He's still alive!

Well that's good news, I really wanted to know, thanks. I'm more of a dead tree type of person, but maybe one day I'll play him in the digital world. Hopefully some tweaks are being done to the gameplay.

What kind of Fighting Fantasy adventure would you really like to read/play or even write? Here are some I'd love to have the time to write but probably never will:
1) A 'Heart of Darkness' style adventure involving a boat-trip up a river to confront the insane horrors in the heart of the jungle. 2) A lava swathed, dinosaur infested treasure hunt in some island full of snakes, natives, ancient ruins, and rival bands of adventurers. 'Lost Valley of the Dinosaurs' in other words. 3) More adventures in Khare. I've started two different ones over the years (a Fabled Lands style open exploration one and a murder investigation one). 3) Deathtrap Dungeon III, for the hell of it! (Maybe not by IL though)

hi fellow adventurers. i'm gonna start posting soon properly cos it's getting quiet again. it might not be anything deep and meaningful but i'll try to make an effort. the name 'bloodbeast' is now gone and 'sylas' is back, but i'm still me to avoid confusion it would be great if you would also share your thoughts as well, get a discussion going, even if you've already commented long ago before (maybe your thoughts have changed a bit since). happy posting

(Maybe not by IL though) I will do my part and try to post as many mini adventures as I can here so that FF doesn't completely sink beneath the waves and we never see it again until we're bored and decide to go down to visit it- you know- Titanic. But if you want FF to survive you have to support it including fan-based stuff (which is what FFproject is trying to do). I'm heavily medicated now (not the person I used to be) so writing and keeping track of references and its contents is a little foggy on my part. I am working on three 400 ref gamebooks and plan to publish them when I'm finished editing them. That should take about a hundred years from now given my state of mind. I would HONESTLY like to see more amateur works in The Pen is Mightier Than The Sword, at least we know people are studying the books and actually playing them. But that's just wishful thinking on my part, no one ever listens to me anyways. Fans gotta keep FF afloat, even if we just talk about it. Paltogue, nice blog btw.

Another dead tree person here. Nothing would make me happier than seeing just one new "official" FF book released in hard copy form every year.
I think this would be economically viable or at least cost-neutral if the IP holders wanted to choose such a strategy. FF was selling OK in bookstores until the changing nature of the publishing industry hit hard around 2010. Now it's hard even to find a good bookstore, magazines are dying, etc, so it's not that FF was dying off just that books have to find other pathways rather than big print runs and placement in chain stores. There must be a lot of old fans like me who although we like and purchase apps, still favour holding a book in the hand. C'mon Ian and Steve, I know you're nostalgic too and it could be done without being a money sink.

i suggested to Jon Green at the FF Fest that Knights of Doom should be revised and re-released through Kickstarter since it's the only one of his original titles that has yet to see a second outing. he agreed that this might be a viable idea and he had also been thinking along these lines. how far this will get, i guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Surely that would only be possible if Wizard Books (and Steve & Ian) give him the okay since they hold the rights, or if he stripped all FF/Titan references and game system from the book (ala Morris & Thomson's Keep of the Lich-Lord re-release)?

I think that's what he meant when the idea was brought up. we were also standing next to Steve n Ian at the time so i doubt he'd try anything funny

I have found you again by a total fluke. Good times. I have the nerdiest solution to Night Of The Necromancer. The Champskees solution is wonderful as ever especially the readability but I play by strict no metaknowldedge known by my avatar. This means my avatar does not know the combination lock number in COC unless I direct him there. Champskees solution seems to give your avatar metaknowledge but it is clear his solution is more a key than a series of sequential steps.

By the way, there were a handful of your posts salvaged from the old forum if you were interested, mostly in the Questions about perfect route through all 4 books of Sorcery thread as well as the threads on Kharé and Crown in that sub-forum. There are a couple of others, but mostly one line ones such as in Fighting Fantasy shipping disasters.

I own 1-15 and Sorcery from 1983-1985 and 21 from 1986. I picked up Wizard versions of Crypt Of The Sorcerer and Spellbreaker just before they sold out not too long ago. I own Wizard 2 Appointment With Fear, Creature Of Havoc, Night Of The Necromancer, Bloodbones and Stormslayer. I have secondhand copies of Mask Of Mayhem, Island Of The Undead and Return To Firetop Mountain from someone on the other board. Lastly a secondhand slightly bashed copy of Howl Of The Werewolf from an Amazon site. This is fine but which other classics would you buy?

All the classics are enjoyable in some way. Of the ones you currently have, which do you like best?

City Of Thieves and Deathtrap Dungeon are very atmospheric and engaging.
Sorcery deserves a mention because it has taken 30 years to be more or less happy with a solution. The more adult tone and puzzles are compelling especially compared to the simple language of TWOFM.

Vault of the Vampire wouldn't be a bad shout in that case. It's got a horror atmosphere like Night of the Necromancer and also uses the hub and spoke design. It's also a solid dungeon adventure like Deathtrap Dungeon.
