Greetings, my dear "Fighting Fantasy and gamebooks in general" fans:
I'm João from Portugal, and it's with the utmost pleasure that I'd like to introduce to you my Fighting Fantasy-based amateur gamebook "The Caves of Evil", an adventure that had its roots way back in 1992 when I was just an 11-year-old kid and decided to give writing a gamebook a try (when most kids at that age would only read them), with it now being finally released in its English translated version and available online in HTML format at my own personal blog.
I'm not going to waste any time explaining to you the detailed origins of my amateur gamebook, as you can find such information right here: www.joaoruivo.com/works/the-caves-of-evil/origins-of-this-work/
If you wonder what kind of gamebook this is in terms of its theme, I'd ask you to imagine that "The Warlock of Firetop Mountain" and "Deathtrap Dungeon" decided to have a kid while playing "The Legend of Zelda", and "The Caves of Evil" was born as a result of that affair. I'm sure you'll understand all these references after reading it.
If you're interested in taking a look and giving it a try, you can find the entire gamebook here: www.joaoruivo.com/works/the-caves-of-evil/
Obviously, I'd love to hear from you, as I'm open to accepting all kinds of constructive criticism, whether good of bad. This is, by now, my first and only amateur gamebook. If you think this gamebook rocks and is well written and well done, I'd love to read your feedback. On the other hand, if you think this sucks and I should never ever be close to a pen and paper or a keyboard again in an attempt to write another one of these horrible things, I'd still love to read your feedback regardless. I only ask you to be honest and sincere with me.
Please have in mind that English isn't my first language, and I did the entire translation from the Portuguese version myself (which was released first on Christmas day 2015, and, if you're interested in this version for whatever reason, you can find it here: www.joaoruivo.com/trabalhos/as-grutas-do-mal/). Therefore, please don't expect a "Shakespearesque" masterpiece of English literature with this gamebook (and by the way, it was translated to American English, as it's the most common type of English online). You may even find its English a little bit "basic" and even find a grammar error here and there. Anyway, I did my absolute best to come up with the greatest English translation I could come up with.
Finally, I'd like to finish this by saying that this work doesn't stop here and will continue to be a "work in progress". Why? Because I don't plan on releasing it only in HTML format on my own blog. The possible next step will be to send it to "fightingfantasy.com" and also "ffproject.com" for them to publish it in "classic" pdf format to be downloaded among the other amateur adventures found there. Then, I'll be releasing it in "video format" on YouTube. It'll be similar to the HTML version (the text will be displayed on screen), but it'll be accompanied by matching background music and a few sound effects in order to offer you a more "video gamesque" feeling.
Then, I also plan on starting a weekly newsletter you can subscribe for free. In there, I'll send you email messages (no spam, don't worry) with many "behind-the-scenes" curiosities about the gamebook and also a few subtle hints and tips to help you follow the correct path and collect the essential items in order to complete the game (which is very hard, to be honest, but not impossible to finish).
Don't expect those plans to be short term ones though, but they'll eventually see the light of day at some point, so, stay tuned and enjoy "The Caves of Evil" in HTML format for now: www.joaoruivo.com/works/the-caves-of-evil/
Oh, and by the way, your like on "The Caves of Evil" Facebook page (www.facebook.com/TheCavesofEvil) would also be truly appreciated:
Thanks in advance for your upcoming support!
