Just been thinking. I haven't added any TRAIL points so feel free to drop them anywhere. Also in my Masks Of Mayhem offering you can end up with two items (although they are battle aids so probs don't need to be taken into account) There are 3 different items that you can end up with in COC which could have significant use in later parts - feel free to use them however you like. ( I don't know if we need a thread with a list of items etc acquired somewhere to help future writers?)

I think these suggestions are good - it hadn't occurred to me to link an appearance from Ian to one of his many cameos. I would be interested in writing for this project if submissions are still needed. Certainly – the original idea that DSR was pressing for was that this was something that could be continued indefinitely with people still able to add sections however long it got and even if both he and I left the forum. (He really has now left the forum which was unexpected and unexplained.) It's a bit surprising that despite nine months of tumbleweed after the first section was posted it suddenly looks like there could be a backlog of 3, 4 or even 5 sections to process! But if you write something which fits the bill I'll work it in eventually. Did you have an idea in mind? Send me a PM.

( I don't know if we need a thread with a list of items etc acquired somewhere to help future writers?) Just to come back belatedly on this: Don't worry about the TRAIL points. I might edit one in somewhere but I'm not very clear on what happens to someone who amasses too many yet. Something certainly fatal if you get them too soon though. You're right about needing an inventory of items that the hero has been able to acquire. I did include a list of what you could be carrying after the first (5 paragraph) scene in a spoiler in this post but that's already out of date. I'm not sure what the best way to do it is. Perhaps I'll add a new post with a spoiler in it in this thread and just keep editing in the objects (and perhaps potential spells, TRAIL points etc) that the hero could have picked up...?
Other than that, two questions for anyone interested... I deliberately made the Intro ambiguous as to where you were starting from (so we could get the hell on with it). That shop might conceivably be on 21st century Earth or on Khul or anywhere... Do people have strong feelings where the hero is starting from? (This seems a more pressing question now that I've scanned one of Steven's entries and seen the word 'eBay'.) I'm thinking that the hero doesn't necessarily make it home even if they're successful – I might even edit in a line about them being bored with their life up to this point. Following on from that, now that there are enough sections in the pipeline for this to be a proper adventure I want to start thinking about how to square the circle wrt it always having the potential to continue indefinitely with including some successful endings. Endings where you manage to stow the Aleff somewhere safe or something and live happily in one of the books (perhaps I should be crediting a certain Portuguese poster for this idea ). I think the best way to do this would be just luck, so in a few sections if you do well there's a rationale for, say, a simple 1 in 6 chance of achieving the ending, otherwise you have to continue. Anyway I am now working on this stuff so hopefully things will keep moving.

Yes, I presumed that it was set in present day earth, although my offerings should be easy enough to edit...

Yo, Babbagefart here.
I did check in a few days after writing my suggestion but then completely forgot about this place! Really glad I checked in this morning though and to see that things are picking up with the whole writing a gamebook thing. I'm busy this morning so won't be spending long here but tomorrow I will take a look at what I'd written as an entry and rewrite it with you guys' suggestions in mind. Then I hope to check in weekly after that. Happy new year guys.

This is a bit awkward though: After not hearing from you for several weeks I assumed that you were never coming back, and started discussing with Kieran in November whether your bit should be finished off or abandoned. In December I sent him an edited version for comments and I've just been editing it into the adventure today. I was astonished to see your message to me and reply here. What do you think of the edited version?

Hey everyone, I am back after two years of solo contemplation. Got a lot of catching up on threads to do. Thanks to TAM for initiating the project and thanks to all the contributors so far. I will get to writing some sections asap, though my books are in a somewhat inaccessible place right now. Thinking of choosing one of the sci-fi books or one of Stephen Hand's books.
Edit: Currently working on a Legend of the Shadow Warriors segment

OK I've now added kieran 's bit (I might bump the thread shortly). Considering that only very limited editing was necessary (mostly typos and what the birds do when you use the Aleff) it probably shouldn't have taken this long. At the moment the submissions for this have picked up some momentum which is good to see. I have Steven's two entries in hand and promises of more from Daredevil123, Babbagefart and DeadShadowRunner. The only problem is that this is getting quite difficult to coordinate. As the queue develops, people are writing before they've had a chance to read all the entries which will come before them. That probably means that there's more reason for people to mention which book they're riffing on on this thread (and sending me more details of what's intended). I will add that running inventory on here as well so people can keep up with what items the hero might have, but of course that can only ever be as up to date as the most recent section I've finished processing. Also no one replied to this (or mentioned it in any message): I'm thinking that the hero doesn't necessarily make it home even if they're successful – I might even edit in a line about them being bored with their life up to this point. I think the best way to do this would be just luck, so in a few sections if you do well there's a rationale for, say, a simple 1 in 6 chance of achieving the ending, otherwise you have to continue. ...so I'm assuming that there are still no 'wins' planned. I'd really like this to be a properly playable adventure, which should be possible, rather than just something where you try not to die for a bit and then hit the lyrics from Bright Eyes. At some point soon I'm thinking I might add something like a ZED spell or ToD-style reset where you get dumped back at para 1 with no possessions. That would be at the end of whatever the most recent section is and be put further off every time someone wanted to add something. That would square the circle of this being potentially ever expandable without having the hero likely to just hit the end of the road. But of course this would only work if there were potential wins hidden in the mix, otherwise it would just be maddening. Each one could be individually unfairly difficult to access (say rolling 11 or more on two dice) so long as there are a few on offer. Thoughts?

OK everyone, I've been semi-detached for a number of weeks, so let's have a bit of a catch-up. I still don't really have a fully worked out rationale for the whole adventure, but I thought I'd make some comments: I'm thinking that the basic theme here should be various characters from other gamebook ranges wanting to gain power over the FF universe, either to spread their influence into it or to source new magics and fighting beasts for which their enemies will not be prepared. So the 'wins' can be anywhere that the hero can be confident that the Aleff has been put out of their reach and where they can live a happy life of their own. Relatedly, I'm thinking that a failed TRAIL test (probably rolling 1 die and seeing if it's less or equal for a fail) leads the hero to be teleported into one of the other gamebook universes to have a showdown with someone sufficiently powerful magic-wise to attempt such a thing. That will result in some kind of battle and/or item-check which will could be fatal. If the hero survives, they are sent back into the FF-universe and onward choosing between the options they would have been choosing between if they'd passed the roll. I don't want failing a TRAIL roll to be beneficial. So, that's to say that I'm moving away from the idea of being on a collision-course with a Globus-style final showdown. Does anyone have any ideas for sorcerers or similar in Lone Wolf, Way of the Tiger, Golden Dragon etc who might want to snatch power over the FF universe? As I've said I'm not really well versed enough in other series to do this so I'll need you lot to write them. As I'd previously suggested that perhaps Talisman of Death represented a good model for this adventure, I think I might put the hero through a bottleneck presenting an explanation based on a modified version. However, the explanation is likely to be very thin unless ideas are added by you lot (or occur to me later). Still, it will probably give me the opportunity to make a couple of jokes and that's the important thing. Other than that, I have some ideas for bits using Portal of Evil and just possibly – and why not? – Spectral Stalkers, so if anyone has designs on using any of those three books, perhaps they can get in touch first. Oh and I created a page on Titannica for this thing a little while back.

As I've said I'm not really well versed enough in other series to do this so I'll need you lot to write them. Naar would be the obvious candidate for Lone Wolf - supreme God of Darkness constantly trying to gain control of the Lone Wolf Universe (Aon) - sure he would branch out to other universes if he could. If you wanted to go more small scale, there's Darklord Gnaag, Naar's chief servant on Magnamund (Lone Wolf's planet) through books 8-12. Archdruid Cadak is another possibility. Way of the Tiger has a few options - there's obviously a bit of a crossover with Talisman of Death being set in Orb. Death might be the most obvious choice as he is the principal villain of Talisman of Death even if he never actually makes an appearance. Golden Dragon is set in a less developed world and its villains are all relatively small scale. Possible options are the evil wizards Damontir the Mad or Arkayn Darkrobe. Damontir kinda appears in Fabled Lands too (he's one of the pre-generated characters) so you could maybe say he's learned something of dimension jumping.

Naar, Death and Nil are on the extreme end of the villain scale. Wouldn't significant but lesser villains, who want to qualify for the premier league, be better? I'm thinking of the likes of Vonotar the Traitor from LW, Manse the Deathmage from WoTT, Susurrien from Blood Sword, Zandabar the Necromancer from Fatemaster, Forbidden Gateway's Baron Ausbach, Shasarak the Wytch-King from The World of Lone Wolf, Moth Lady from the Golden Girl series... (okay, maybe not that last one).

Vonotar the Traitor from LW Good shout. While I suggested Gnaag or Cadak, they're loyal servants of Naar. Vonotar on the other hand is completely out for himself and could quite believably be looking to control other universes as a means to eclipse Naar.

How many times have I seen this thread title and not bothered to look at what it's all about? It's an intriguing idea, and the thought of revisiting favourite scenes from past gamebooks sounds like fun. Unfortunately I'm busier than I've ever been these days, and have time neither to properly play the growing adventure nor to contribute.
However, reading the post gave me the following thought about the idea, which may or may not have been covered already among contributers. Potentially, the sorcerers of Titan may already know of this threat to their world. How could they have been warned? Dark gods, demons, do-gooders from other realms? How might they react? Could this cast a different light on their actions in the books? Could Malbordus, Balthus Dire or Zharradan Marr have been amassing power to thwart what is essentially an alien invasion (if only to keep Titan for themselves)? Could Razaak or even the Titanium Cyborg have been secretly in league with, and supported by, the invading power? This could mean they or their surroundings might yield information or items useful to the adventure. No doubt there are many other ways this pan-dimensional threat could alter our perspectives of the various books. Just a few thoughts.

(okay, maybe not that last one). We know from ToD that Damolh, one of the Sons of Nil, is trapped in a statue.
Is it that unlikely that there are other sons that are also trapped somewhere on Orb?
There could be a cult dedicated to their freeing and teaming up so they can conquer another world somewhere and link it with Orb...

There seem to be a lot of promising ideas and good discussion here for TRAIL test fails. Is anyone actually working on any of these possibilities? Obviously I know there are some regular sections in the pipeline, but I think having a TRAIL-fail is higher priority. As I said, I want to introduce a potential win section before too long, and I feel the hero should have to face at least one TRAIL roll before having a chance of winning, however remote. I would have thought that someone might want to bagsie Lone Wolf in particular (not to say that there absolutely couldn't be more than one excursion into that universe, but I certainly don't want two consecutively, and there may not be room for many TRAIL-fail sections generally). It's largely up to you what form the peril takes – maybe just some complicated fight scene, or maybe you are dumped in a cage or a maze and have to find your way to escape/find the Aleff, so long as there's some kind of explanation of who's causing it and why. Consider using one of the items you might have picked up (listed above) as the only guard against instadeath. Please be harsh – players should be aiming to avoid ending up here. At best they should expect to leave with a dent in their STAMINA and perhaps their other stats too. I'm thinking that if anything a TRAIL-fail section could be slightly shorter than a regular section, though it wouldn't have to be. Although it might look like nothing is happening at the moment, I am getting through the exposition bit (slipping from pastiche to full-on parody, trampling on FF canon and basically stealing daredevil123 's idea) and have some ideas for doing a win section. So hopefully we can have a 'complete' (but limited, in need of expansion) adventure before the end of time too long.

How goes all this? Has anyone else submitted some wee offerings? Hiya, thanks for asking. I haven't had any new sections sent to me, but then I haven't been seeking any. I still have your Citadel offering of course and other people mentioned they had ideas for additional sections. Looking at the Aleff adventure itself I'd already teed-up your Citadel section as one of the next ones, but I think it should probably be bumped on one stage. I think I do want to edit it a bit first – you said you didn't mind...? The plan remains roughly: -Section with a bit of exposition (I've mostly done this – possibly not to everyone's liking, but it exists) -TRAIL test which if failed takes the hero into a showdown with someone from another gamebook. As I've said I need someone else to do this or most of it. If people want to help push this forward this is still the thing which needs help at the highest priority. (PM me...) Preferably, both of those things would come in before... -Section with the possibility of winning. I think I have to write the first one of these and hopefully others will add more later. As yet I haven't written any of it but I have a thumbnail sketch of how it might work. After that I'll wrap the end, try to get some more playthroughs – maybe by linking to it on an FB page – and wait for further contributions. Ideally at some point I'd like the thing to continue plodding along with other people's contributions whilst I have 1% involvement.

So this bit of the forum has come back to life!
Even before recent events I have been working on this project, believe it or not, and I think we're nearing a key point with it. (Big thanks to Doigy for his contribution, and for being typically good natured about me monkeying about with his latest section.)
I retain my blind faith that someone, at some point, somehow, somewhere will write a TRAIL-fail section. (You can see where the first one would fit in the adventure now.)
I'll check back here once I've completed work on the bit I'm working on – hopefully it shouldn't take too long.

No one's offered anything recently, but that's OK. I must complete the section I'm working on (I've been slacking off but back on it now) and I'm now resigned to having to write a little TRAIL-fail section too. However once those are done I'm hoping we can regroup and maybe give this thing a new push.
