This probably makes a negligible difference but I notice the above solution takes several opportunities to gain Stamina (such as accepting food from Lady Webspinn). Surely it is better not to do this so as to have as low a Stamina as possible when fighting the Obsidian Giants?

I was vaguely aware of this and it is why I try to gain no more stamina after the -5 stamina from taking the seeds.

I think this combined with the weakwater should suffice but nevertheless Champskees will no doubt come up with some party pooper idea like he normally does. If he bests my Night Of The Necromancer and Stormslayer I will start swallowing glass and drinking paraquat.

The book is another one the entries that could have been good but ultimately fails to impress. Just from a design point of view, the book could have had a hard and easy path much like Sword of the Samurai. Problem is that everything just gets handed to you at the end anyway, so there is little point. You do not even need to give the priestess a vial of smoke oil to reach the final paragraph! If you have Lord Azzur's khopesh, you find another one is just handed to you at the last moment anyway, complete with the Pretty Potion already applied to it, which is a bit of a smack in the face. There are lots of 'clues' as to what you need to do, but very few end up being vital and many of the messages are repeated again and again throughout the book. 

In terms of the setting, the nostalgia of visiting Blacksand and Salamonis is offset by the enemies you encounter, none of which you would find in Out of the Pit. The total destruction and annihilation of some of the most recognisable cities in Fighting Fantasy means it will be hard for future writers to incorporate these settings into their own books without some contradiction or conflict. Personally I see this entry as non-canon, maybe there is a way around explaining the destruction etc.

The idea of different weapons was an interesting concept. The use of the nostalgia potion and the compass was imo a good move, giving the player a second/third chance is sometimes preferable than having to start from the beginning all over again.

JB's path is acceptable as the main strategy is covered i.e. use the Deathstone at the end to avoid the combats. Cycling through the Pool of Misery can allow a player to reduce their stamina to 1 before they face the Obsidian Guards, which guarantees success. I believe there is a much quicker route through the book, though it is ultimately up to the reader to decide how many clues/conversations they wish to accumulate over the adventure. The solution I present below is one of the quickest paths through the adventure and conserves as many Smoke Oil Vials as possible (I know they only need one at the end but more should help, right?). The firewater can be avoided with the use of another smoke vial. Some of the clues can also be skipped.

I imagine any future books set in Blacksand or Salamonis will simply be set earlier in the FF timeline (as when Mungo appears in The Port of Peril despite dying in Island of the Lizard King).

Champskees I notice you didn’t address the problem at the end (paragraph 105) where you apparently need the magic boots to progress but technically you can’t possibly have them because at paragraph 122 you’re told you can’t take anything passed the Gates? What’s you thoughts on that?

Hi there. I notice you didn’t address the issue of needing the magic boots to progress at para 105 but can’t possibly have the at this stage because 122 says you can’t take possessions passed the Gates. What’s your thoughts on getting around this?

What is the consensus on taking your equipment through the gates? Nowhere does it actually say you lose any of your equipment even though you are just a disembodied spirit so RAW you can take whatever you want.
The book of the dead says you can only take something belonging to Ulrakaah through - which means a khopesh but nothing else. That may have been the intention, but it isn’t mentioned when you pass through the gates and you need magical boots to win so you must be able to take at least those.

If you play it that way, you might be better to forego the Weakwater potion and fight the Obsidian Giants unarmed (-2 to your attack strength and you only do 1 point of damage). If you have an initial skill of 8 or 9, I think you could lose unarmed against the Obsidian Giants and still win your last two fights using the khopesh (+2 attack strength and 3 damage against the Demon Horde; +1 attack strength against human-form Ulrakaah).

Absolutely awful book, for a variety of reasons (too easy to the point you don't have to risk one die roll, lots of continuity errors and ambiguities, feels tedious, poor art, low quality writing). Imho the WORST FF, worse than Skylord. Seriously sucky.

I'm prepared to view the boots situation as simply being a mistake by the author. You die, so how could your spirit take items?

As a skill 11, taking weakwater and fighting unarmed got me down to 7 and it was enough, but playing it out seemed illogical

I thought the same thing about that fight against the Obsidian Giants. An option to throw the fight was one of my suggestions for improving the end game that I proposed here.

Titannica's entry on Gates Of Death mentions the Italian version substitutes asking whether you have the boots for a Stamina test fightingfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/The_Gates_of_Death_(book) which makes some sense, although it does mean acquiring the boots becomes pointless.

   In a similar vein, Titannica also suggests that after taking the Weakwater your Skill should be restored at some point, perhaps after passing the gates. If you can't take the Deathstone through the gates, it is another item like the poison earring in Assassins Of Allansia that is powerful but you can't tecnically take, but OTOH it does mean you have to win fights in this broken book.

   I would be keen to know how anyone trying to 'fix' this car crash of a book would deal with these problems!

I think you might have misread the consequences of taking the weakwater. It doesn't reduce your Skill by 2, it reduces your Skill to 2.

Just re-read it. That is absurd. Ok, so no chance of winning the fights on the other side with a skill of two. You definitely should be able to lay down your arms and let the Giants kill you. It is an illogical forced fight otherwise. You could sit there for hours rolling the dice and killing them over and over until eventually they land enough blows to wear you down.

Imagine that in the frenzy scoring....
Kills: Brother Tobyn, 5 x highwaymen, 201 Obsidian Giants...

Of course you can poison yourself down to 1 stamina by drinking from that pool.

Ikay, this book us a mess. It's staggering that no one ever thought to test these books before releasing them

That's pretty much the only way to do it I think. Even then, you might get (un)lucky and they never hit you.
