This is my proposed solution to this book. There are other routes to take, and you only need 800 Gold Pieces at the end of the journey to be successful, but all things considered I believe this is the safest route with a good chance of making it in time & retrieving enough gold to see you through. Even if you miss a couple of Gold Pieces along the way, you should be able to make it through.
This could have been an excellent book, the main problem is the difficulty. Most crew battles are tough and crew strength is hard to sustain. This also has an effect upon whether you get to Nippur on time & surviving that life or death Crew Strength test towards the end. It is also a lot to ask the player to have at least 800 Gold Pieces at the end of the journey. In saying this, I recommend you have a Crew Strike of 12 & Crew Strength of at least 15 (though I have won legit with 13). You will also want Skill 10 minimum and 9-10 Luck as well.
Stats:
Travel time using this method: 46 - 56 days. You could reduce this further by skipping the Eastern Rim after the ‘Merchantmen’ section and going straight to the shoals (making it max 50 days), but the life/death 3D6 Crew Strength test can be rather unforgiving.
Amount of Gold accumulated at end by using this method: 595 - 963 Gold Pieces. Bear in mind the minimum is a result of failing several Luck and Skill tests, as well as being particularly unlucky with random D6 rolls (and whether your Log is even or odd). This method will generally net you over 800 Gold if your stats are respectable. The amount includes the 20 Gold you begin the adventure with.
Solution:
- Patrol the Inland Sea via the Isle of Enraki.
Enraki
- Test Crew Strength (+4/5 Days)
- Find a way behind the mountains behind the castle (+2 Days).
- Continue along the path.
- Ignore it and proceed down towards the temple castle.
- Attack immediately by storming the low part of the wall.
- Fight Strike 8 Strength 10 Enraki Priests. Crew Fight.
- Take 85 Gold Pieces & 10 Slaves.
- Go to the Eastern Rim (Rivers of the Dead) for a bit of coastal raiding.
Rivers of the Dead
- Test Crew Strength (+5/6 Days).
- Climb over the hills.
- Go down the tunnel with a few of your best men.
- Have a close look at the statue.
- Move the statue to the right.
- Leave everything alone and make your way to the other door.
- Pull it away from the door.
- Open the sarcophagus.
- Take Helmet & 110 Gold Pieces.
- Pull it down.
- Head out into the Inland Sea, to patrol for rich merchantmen.
Merchantmen
- Test Crew Strength (+4/5 Days).
- If log is even:
o Test Luck. Succeed = +2 Crew Strength. Fail = Fight Strike 9 Strength 8 Hydra. Crew Fight. Hydra has 52 Gold Pieces.
o Go Eastern Rim (recommended).
- If log is odd:
o Attack the ship.
o Fight Sk 11 St 6 Shade.
o Take 120 Gold Pieces & 2 Slaves.
o Go to the Eastern Rim.
Eastern Rim
- Test Crew Strength (+5/6 Days).
- Swim into the hole in the stern.
- You will help them.
- Continue to swim down into the cave.
- Change your direction and take the side passage.
- Leave the skulls alone and continue down the tunnel.
- Fight Sk 8 St 12 Krell.
- From now on, you only use 2D6 when testing Crew Strength instead of 3D6.
- Go towards the shoals of Trysta.
Shoals of Trysta
- Test Crew Strength (+4/5 Days).
- Tack north into the wind to sit out the foul weather.
- Roll D6. 1-3 = +2 Days. 4-6 = +3 Days.
- If log is even:
o Stand and fight.
o Fight Strike 10 Strength 8 Kishian Warship. Crew Fight.
o Take 11 Slaves.
o Go to Kish.
- If log is odd:
o Frighten the ship’s master into handing over all his gold without a fight.
o Take 117 Gold Pieces.
o Go to Kish.
Kish
- Test Crew Strength (+5/6 Days).
- Test Skill.
- If successful:
o March stealthily through the cornfields.
o Test Luck.
o If successful:
o Fight Strike 6 Strength 10 Town Militia. Crew Fight.
o Fight Sk 10 St 10 Sith Orb.
o Take 130 Gold Pieces.
o Beat a hasty retreat to the banshee.
- If unsuccessful:
o Fight Strike 8 Strength 10 Militiamen. Crew Fight.
o Lose 1 Crew Strength point.
o Bow to pressure from your crew.
- Go towards the Roc.
Roc
- Test Luck (+2 Days).
- If lucky:
o Fight Strike 10 Strength 4 Roc. Crew Fight.
o Land on the island.
o Head for the higher slopes of the central mountain.
- If unlucky:
o Fight St 11 St 10 Roc.
o Climb down the hole before the Roc can resume its attack.
- Continue down the tunnel.
- Fight Sk 7 St 6 Invisible Striker (-2 to your skill for this combat).
- Walk down the stairs.
- Use your sword as a lever to roll the boulder down to crush the trogs.
- Take 100 Gold Pieces.
- Go Shurrupak.
Shurrupak
- Test Crew Strength (+5/6 Days).
- Sell your slaves.
- Use an agent to sell your slaves (less random).
- Test Luck. Success = Sell each slave for 12 Gold Pieces. Fail = Sell each slave for 8 Gold Pieces.
- Return to the banshee.
- Go to Three Sisters.
Three Sisters
- Test Crew Strength (+4/5 Days).
- Go to the palm covered island.
- Head inland.
- Attack your competition.
- Fight Strike 10 Strength 6 Pirates. Crew Fight.
- Take 112 Gold Pieces.
- Test Crew Strength. Fail = Death.
- You were not given any bags.
Nippur
- Test Crew Strength (+4/5 Days).
- If Log >50 Days, you lose.
- Agree to fight the keeper.
- Flying kick to chest.
- Kick it in armpit.
- Elbow it in the back of the knees.
- Punch it in the jaw.
- Punch it in the eye (not cool bro, not cool).
- Kick it in the elbow.
- Flying kick to chest.
- Kick it in armpit.
- You have reduced Cyclops stamina to 0. Turn to Para 311.
- If your Gold Pieces total is less than 800, you have lost.
- If your Gold Pieces total is 800 or more, you are victorious!
