Wow, how did you get that gig? Jonathan Green kindly recommended me after I did the playtesting for a couple of his ACE gamebooks. But how did you get that gig?

The Hungarian version is available for download here:
With a colour cover and b/w internals. It's interesting to see how they have depicted the monsters I've created, and it's not always like I envisioned.
Click the link and then lick the download arrow on the top right if you're interested.

10.) Name a character who starts off being your friend but then later on there is the opportunity to fight them (need a book, reference number where it's possible to fight them and the name of the friend).
Brother Tobyn from Gates of Death. 1 - Bloodbeasthandler Throm (Deathtrap Dungeon 302) 1 – Petch Littlebig (Eye of the Dragon 360) 1 – Greenspine Kevin Truehand (Masks of Mayhem, section 281 1 Gabe Fandango Masks of Mayhem, 40, Ifor Tynin. 3 - Vastariner 3 - Tyrion 3 – Keiran WRONG Vangorn the Murderer (Khare – Cityport of Traps: he calls you "my friend" on ref 57, he gives you helpful advice on ref 34, then you fight him on ref 13). He never was your friend, you didn’t know him because you only just met him and he was always just pretending. 11 - Peter Lord Kelnor, The Earl Of Drumer from House Of Hell. He never was your friend, you didn’t know him because you only just met him and he was always just pretending. 11 – Wilf Eye of the Dragon Henry Delacor / Sharcle Just a stranger you met in a pub for a few minutes, never was a friend. 11 - Adrius Final Scores Petch 10 Bloodbeasthandler 11 Greenspine 11 Gabe Fandango 11 Vastariner 14 Wilf 21 Adrius 29 Tyrion 34 Kerion 34 Peter 40 This question certainly sorted the men from the teenagers. Poor Wilf fell at the last hurdle and a few others were hit hard by my rulings or, of course, the dreaded Ifor Tynin. That leaves the simple question of, why no Mungo, Bori or Sym? I guess people wanted to avoid the obvious, yet that worked for Petch in reverse. Congratulations to Petch for never dropping a single point! *Whisper* I expect my money to be delivered soon – shhhhhh!
Thanks to all involved and now I intend to never do another of these things as long as live (everyone breathes a sigh of relief).

This shows how observant I am, because I actually missed that.

9.) Name a creature with tentacles. The tentacles must be mentioned by name in the text or the name of the creature (need a book, a reference number and the name of the creature).
Blood Lurcher. Beneath Nightmare Castle para 306 1 – Bloodbeasthandler Saltsucker (Portal of Evil 130) 1 – Petch Squirting Octopus (Island of the Undead 77 1 – Greenspine Flayer (Khare – Cityport of Traps, ref 43 1 – Peter Siege of Sardath, 290, Chthonian Trapper 1 - Vastariner XAKHAZ from Beneath Nightmare Castle: 389, 167 and 313. 1 – Wilf The Tentacled Thing 13 1 – Adrius Tentacles (Dead of Night, section 62). 1 - Gabe Fandango Kraken, assassins of allansia 88 1 – Tyrion Chaos Mutants, Master of Chaos - 173 1 – Kerion
Scores so far Petch 9 Bloodbeasthandler 10 Greenspine 10 Wilf 10 Gabe Fandango 10 Vastariner 11 Adrius 18 Peter 29 Tyrion 31 Kerion 31
I’m just glad that someone chose the Tentacled Thing, which was the inspiration for this question. I’m just as glad, if not more so, that somewhere on Titan there is a creature whose name is just Tentacles (?).

8.) Name a reference where your death is left unexplained (need a book, reference number and the reason why you think the death is left unexplained).
Slaves of the Abyss para 252, 1 – Bloodbeasthandler Magehunter 62 1 – Petch Masks of Mayhem 119 1 – Greenspine Deathmoor, ref 288 1 – Peter Black Vein Prophecy, Reference 300 1 – Wilf
Creature of Havoc418 1 - Adrius Masks of Mayhem, section 263 1 - Gabe Fandango Slaves of the Abyss, 182 3 - Keiran 3 - Tyrion 3 – Vastariner Scores so far Petch 8 Bloodbeasthandler 9 Greenspine 9 Wilf 9 Gabe Fandango 9 Vastariner 10 Adrius 17 Peter 28 Tyrion 30 Kerion 30 This question really sorted the men from the woman, especially with the incredibly popular Slaves of the Abyss appearing no less than 4 times during this answer. I think that says more about the book than about us. It also says a lot about poor Vasterina who loses his iron grip on joint first place. Some of those mysterious death paragraphs were excellent, however I’m surprised to see that Jackson is only responsible for one of them?

7.) Name a creature type that has been depicted in at least three pictures. Need a creature name and 3 references with its pictures and the names of the book(s) they came from. I will not accept creatures from different reissues of the same book with a different artist (so the Bloodbeast from Puffin, IS the same as the Bloodbeast from Scholastic and they do NOT constitute 2 different creatures). I will also not accept answers that involve any of the small repeating inter-textual pictures either.
Tyrannosaurus Rex Portal of Evil 305, Battleblade Warrior para 34, Robot Commando para 39 1 - Bloodbeasthandler
Triceratops (Talisman of Death 4, Battleblade Warrior 34 & Portal of Evil 286). 1 – Petch
Centaur (The Forest of Doom 142, Caverns of the Snow Witch 180, The Seven Serpents 230 1 - Greenspine
Giant Crab IotLK 211, Demons of the Deep 148, Magehunder 314 1 – Vastariner
The Ghoul 1) The Warlock of Firetop Mountain (10) House of Hell (60) Eye of the Dragon 1 - Adrius
GROMULANS Star Strider 54, 249, and 278. 1-Wilf Sabre-toothed Tiger 1) Island of the Lizard King section 350 2) Masks of Mayhem (section 348 for picture 3) Curse of the Mummy (section 134). 1 - Gabe Fandango WRONG 11 - Peter My answer is: The Archmage's Serpents: The Seven Serpents, ref 123 (Fire Serpent), ref 190 (Sun Serpent), ref 199 (Air Serpent, disguised as the ferryman). I believe "The Archmage's Serpents" fits the description of "a creature type". It is the same as 3 pictures of a wild dog, a labrador, and a poodle. I think this is stretching the definition of creature type. After all, the seven serpents are all different from each other and so I’d need three of just one of them.
Mummy curse of the mummy 149, 163 and 397. A jackal and cobra mummy are not mummies in the same way that the first mummy is, they are animal mummies and the first is exactly what I think of as a real Mummy (a bandaged man). Sorry, but I must be as harsh with you as everyone else. 11 - Tyrion
The Hell Demon - House of Hell 181 (in all his glory), 277 and 318 (in Franklins guise). I’m going to say that two of those pictures are not of a hell demon, but rather a butler (disguised or otherwise).. 11 - Kerion Scores so far Vastariner 7 Petch 7 Bloodbeasthandler 8 Greenspine 8 Wilf 8 Gabe Fandango 8 Adrius 16 Peter 27 Tyrion 27 Kerion 27 Bloodbeasthandler chose the T-Rex, which is actually depicted in the same picture as this Triceratop in Portal of Evil! Giant Crabs always remind me of poor Mungo. *Moment’s silence*. Wilf said ‘it was so tempting to answer this with "human" but reckoned some other bugger would have thought of that, though. Before the rule change, he was going to answer with "Living Whirlwind", illustrated differently in the Scholastic and Puffin/Wizard versions of Citadel Of Chaos, and then again on the cover of later Puffin editions. Oh well. Your amended ruling doesn't exclude front covers.’ Yes it does I’m afraid because I asked for a ref (reference).

Phil, I really do appreciate that you have decided not to penalize my answer for Qn 4, but you seem to have awarded me double-points again for Qn 5 for another single-point answer. For some reason I don't seem to like you today Gabe, but seriously I'm copying from another sheet and I keep replicating the error (I've a feeling I'll have to correct the next question right now).

6.) Name a reference where you can lose stamina into the double figures, but this does not include stamina lost in a fight (need a book, a reference number and the amount of stamina you can lose).
Portal of Evil para 305 potentially lose between zero and 24 STAMINA points. 1- Bloodbeasthandler
Blood of the Zombies 368 (2d6 Stamina) 1 – Petch
Spectral Stalkers 205 (automatic reduction of Stamina to 2 points) 1- Greenspine
Temple of Terror, ref 293 (you lose 2d6 Stamina) 1 – Peter
Shamutanti Hills, 258, can lose half your stamina, so you CAN lose into double figures if St > 19 1- Vastariner
Fangs Of Fury, Reference 381. You can lose between 4 and 188 Stamina Points in your attempts. 1 – Wilf
Demons of the Deep Lose 2-digit Stamina, 184 1 – Adrius
Daggers of Darkness, 77. Stamina loss can stack up exponentially (and potentially lose all of it) 1 - Gabe Fandango
Assassins of allansia 237, 10 stamina 1 – Tyrion
Legend of Zagor 124 - possible when the Chaos Champion goes into a frenzy 1 – Kerion
Scores so far Vastariner 6 Petch 6 Bloodbeasthandler 7 Greenspine 7 Wilf 7 Gabe Fandango 7 Peter 16 Tyrion 16 Adrius 16 Kerion 16
Some great answers here including the fact that ANY stamina could be reduced to just 2 points, but I doubt anyone could beat 188 points, even theoretically. So many more interesting ways of reducing the players stamina without a simple ‘you lose this amount’ or ‘roll these dice’.

Ok, I have to confess: I actually did not spot the trap for that last question either, and actually submitted a default weapon (Catchman) for my answer. It IS possible to pick up 3 other weapons in Star Strider (I submitted spear, neutronsword and Catchman. Should have picked blaster for the 3rd one). I'm guessing Phil isn't familiar enough with Star Strider to realize that. I've never read it Gabe but I did visit the refs you mentioned, therefore the fault was mine and your score must still stand. The others were not so lucky.
What on earth is a Catchman anyway? Quite good at catching men I suppose?

5.) Name a creature that can kill you in one hit even if you are at full stamina, so the final hit of a fight doesn't count (need a book, a reference number, creature name and a short description of how it can kill you in one hit).
4th orc from Chasms of Malice 1- Bloodbeasthandler
Second Technician from Starship Traveller 1- Petch
Giant Hornet from Creature of Havoc 1- Greenspine
Mantis Man from Khare – Cityport of Traps 1 – Peter
Xokusai Orc Number 4 from Chasms of Malice 1 – Vastariner
DEITY from Space Assassin 1 – Wilf
Serpent from Temple of Terror 1- Adrius
Spider-man from Citadel of Chaos 1- Gabe Fandango
Zanbar bone from City of thieves 1 – Tyrion
Alligator from Island of the Undead 1 – Kerion
Scores so far
Vastariner 5 Petch 5 Bloodbeasthandler 6 Greenspine 6 Wilf 6 Gabe Fandango 6 Peter 15 Tyrion 15 Adrius 15 Kerion 15
I had no idea how wide open this question was because, of the top of my head, I could only think of the Spider-Man, Mirror Demon and the Cockatrice. I realise of course there are more, but not that many more!
I like the fact that Bloodbeasthandler and Vastariner were both technically one word from failure and that word was the old favourite which no one has ever said or heard of: Xokusai (I myself use that word quite a lot in everyday conversation).
There was one reply out of all of my PMs that stated a monster such as the Giant Sandworm could kill you, but in two hits, not one.

In The Shamutanti Hills you can obtain an ordinary sword from Glandragor (section 233). Doesn't that (in combination with the broadsword and axe that can be bought from the trader in Cantopani) make three? But he did not state those particular swords .

For Q2-3 (and perhaps upcoming questions) would it be possible to announce our answers with the associated gamebook(s) so as to clear any ambiguity? For example, gargoyles in other books not referenced by Gabe may not need a magical weapon to defeat. Q3 edited.

4.) Name a book where you can obtain and wield at least 3 different types of weapons in any number of play-throughs (need book name, names of weapons and ref(s) for all 3 of them)
Blood of the Zombies 1- Petch Khare – Cityport of Traps 1- Peter Knights of Doom 1 - Vastariner Caverns Of The Snow Witch 1 – Wilf Star Strider 1 – Gabe Fandango Tyrion 1 - Stormslayer Beneath Nightmare Castle 2 – Bloodbeasthandler 2 – Greenspine WRONG Demons of the Deep 11 – Adrius Sword(default): you already owned this and so did not obtain it. The Shamutanti Hills 11 – Kerion Sword (starting equipment), You do not obtain the sword, you start with it. Scores so far: Petch 4 Vastariner 4 Wilf 5 Bloodbeasthandler 5 Greenspine 5 Gabe Fandango 5 Peter 14 Tyrion 14 Adrius 14 Kerion 14 The ‘obtain’ bit was a ‘deliberate trap’ (in other words completely accidental until someone pointed out this trap and that they’d avoid falling into it). Going, by the text of my question I absolutely cannot accept something that you started an adventure with as somehow obtaining it. If you already owned it you couldn’t therefore go and get it somewhere else. Don’t blame me, blame the mystery person (you can still send me death threats if you like and I’ll send them on).
I guess Beneath has a lot of weapons in it: Trident of Skarlos, mace, scimitar, Runic Axe and so on?

I’ m especially pleased that Bloodbeasthandler managed to sneak the word ‘bum’ unto this section. I was also going to go with this one but when checking the book to make sure I'd got its name right, I spotted the Drunken Ogre illustrated as having three eyes and figured that was more obscure. I think the whole book is pretty obscure to be honest

3.) Name a creature that needs a magic weapon to defeat (need a book, reference number and a creature name).
Demonspawn from Crypt of the Sorcerer 1- Bloodbeasthandler
Barrow Spirit from Island of the Undead 1 – Petch
Wraith 1- Greenspine from Vault of the Vampire
Shadow from Vault of the Vampire 1 – Vastariner
QUEZKARI from Bloodbones 1 – Wilf
Reiner Heydrich from Revenge of the Vampire 1 – Adrius
Gargoyle from Midnight Rogue 1 - Gabe Fandango
Spectre from Legend of Zagor 1 - Kerion
WRONG
Serpent of Time from The Seven Serpents 11- Peter A "short magic spell or chant" is not a weapon. Sorry Peter .
Voivod from Beneath Nightmare Castle 11 - Tyrion This reference provides no proof that a magic weapon is necessary to destroy Voivod .
My original question was going to be ‘a magical or silver weapon’ but I realised that was too wide and needed to try harder to catch people out. Also, did you know that most FF Were Creatures don’t require silver to kill?
I hope I wasn’t too harsh but I did ask for a weapon and you must show me proof that the weapon is necessary and that it is magical. Not an easy question.

2.) Name a creature with more than 2 eyes (need a book, reference number and a creature name). The Bum-Faced Monster 1 - Bloodbeasthandler Hydra-Snake 1- Petch Two-Headed Lizard Man 1 – Greenspine God-Headed Hydra 1 – Peter Logic Dog 1 – Vasterina Shadow 1 – Vastariner The Two-headed Troll 1 – Adrius Two headed dog 1 - Tyrion Drunken Ogre 1 - Kerion Cradoc 2 – Wilf 2 – Gabe Fandango Vastariner’s first answer for this was the dreaded Giant Clam, because clams apparently have many eyes. However, the illustration’s don’t depict them and the text doesn’t state this so he rightly gave me the second choice of Logic Dog, which I’d never heard of (although it sounds bloody great) and which no one else picked, thankfully. Speaking of thanks, I’ m especially pleased that Bloodbeasthandler managed to sneak the word ‘bum’ unto this section. Although I would’ve given actual extra points only to someone who managed to say a very rude word somewhere and then defend it logically (like the Logic Dog would have no doubt).
Commiserations to poor Wilf and Gabe for having the bad luck to both pick the Cradoc. Scores so far: Bloodbeasthandler 2 Petch 2 Greenspine 2 Peter 2 Vastariner 2 Adrius 2 Tyrion 2 Kerion 2 Wilf 3 Gabe Fandango 3

Unique Answers Game Round 9 Results1.) Name a creature with 2 or more special abilities (need a book, reference number and a creature name).Wraith Queen from Night of the Necromancer 1 – Bloodbeasthandler Great Serpent Curse of the Mummy 1 – Petch Serpensa the Snakewoman from Howl of the Werewolf 1- Greenspine Yourself (in Knights of Doom you choose 4 special abilities from a list in the Rules section). 1- Peter Pyramidal cell from Night Dragon 1- Vastariner Iron Golem Knights Of Doom, reference 382 1- Wilf Jean Lafayette from Appointment with FEAR 1- Adrius Cradoc from Deathmoor 1- Gabe Fandango Morgan from Masks of Mayhem 1- Tyrion Lightning Serpent from Crystal of Storms 1- Kerion It seems to me that I miscalculated just how many ‘creatures’ had 2 or more special abilities. I knew I should have said 3, that would have sorted the men from the other men. Petch had the cheekiest answer with ‘Yourself’, who is of course ‘a creature’, although this is quite close to Jean Lafayafette who is also a kind of ... yourself, but a named one all is good. Nobody went for the Cockatrice, which I found quite surprising. Scores so far:
