Not having been the first books to be played, these two are very nostalgic to me: TEMPLE Of TERROR & CHASMS OF MALICE

Pretty much most of them especially the ones I enjoyed. But oddly it's Fighting Fantasy - The Wishing Well for me as it's the first rpg I ran.

There were a group of us in my primary school class who were obsessed with FF, I have some fond nostalgic memories of the books I played back then. Creature of Havoc was the one that generated the most discussion, chiefly because of its enormous difficulty. We used to compare notes on how far we'd managed to get, but none of us were able to get out of the opening dungeon; I think our immature brains were incapable of deciphering the coded sections even after we'd discovered the answer key. And even if we could, I don't think any of us would have possessed the lateral thinking ability to use the secret passage trigger at the misprinted dead end reference. Somewhere there's an 8 year old version of me forever doomed to wander the passages beneath the Forest of Spiders.
City of Thieves was another big class favourite, and I have some quite distinct memories of us comparing our hand-drawn maps of Scorpion Swamp.

Caverns of the Snow Witch because my friend gave it to me for nothing 35 years ago.

Vault of the Vampire as I found a 2nd hand copy in a bookshop while travelling and played it while waiting for various intercity overnight buses

Phantoms of Fear. It seemed an insurmountably hard book to my nine-year-old self, compared to Stealer of Souls and Forest of Doom, and it really gives strong 80's fantasy vibes like Legend, or The Never-ending Story. To this day I have not revisited it because I would feel how small and powerless that adventure made me feel! I wonder if it inspired 'Beyond the Deepwoods', the first of the Edge Chronicles...

I would strongly recommend revisiting it and focus on the story rather than the game aspect, treating that as secondary. It is so beautifully written and extremely well designed that it would be a shame for you to miss out now. If you were talking about Crypt, Zombies or Spellbreaker then I'd understand. I find it nostalgic as it was a joy to read, play, explore and unwrap. Even though I know my way round it reasonably well, I love taking different options just to see what happens. Paragraph 1 was and still is EPIC and is the best opener to any FF book. Siege of Sardath is another nostalgic book for similar reasons, though in this case its the best intro.

Completely agree about the opening to Phantoms. I still find it quite hard to believe that the same author who penned that intro is responsible for that ending to Masks of Mayhem!
