I learned the Sorcery spells when the books first came out and worked out why most of them were named as they were and how the artefacts were relevant. But not all. If anyone can add to this, then do so.
ZAP - onomatopoeic - the noise electricity or lightning makes
HOT – fireballs, they’re hot.
FOF – Force Field
WAL – WALL
LAW – law being something to obey, the connection here is that the animal obeys you
DUM – Dumb, stupid
BIG – obvious, it’s a growth spell, you become big
WOK. The coin being circular in turn becomes a circular shield. WOK coming from the cooking pan which is metal and circular too?
DOP – Door Open
RAZ – razor sharp, beeswax can be applied to protect metal and give it a nice finish.
SUS – from British slang word sus, suss – to realise or work something out
SIX – an illusion of 6 versions of the spellcaster
JIG – a dance. Bamboo flute is a musical instrument.
GOB – goblin, using the teeth is inspired by Jason and the Argonauts
YOB – British slang, a yob being a rude, aggressive or violent person. See above re tooth
GUM – glue needed for a glue spell. Gum is another word for glue
HOW – clairvoyance spell, to help you know how to proceed.
DOC – doctor. To be cast on a healing potion
DOZ – doze or doziness,
DUD – a dud being something that’s a failure, useless
MAG – magic nullification spell
POP – onomatopoeic, the stones go pop or bang
FAL – a prevent falling spell
DIM – target is made stupid or daft
, dim.
FOG – creates a fog, a dense mist
MUD – turning normal sand into quicksand, dangerous mud
NIF –slang – niff, a bad smell. The noseplugs protect you from it
TEL – Telepathy. I assume the skullcap was chosen as the spell artefact simply because it is an item of headgear.
GAK – a slang word meaning disgust? I’ve never heard of it. Was it in comic books or something? A mask can be frightening and is generally used to change appearance which is why it’s the artefact here.
SAP – sapping strength, weakening
GOD – presume this comes from the word 'god', and will make others well-disposed towards you? Not sure why the jewel of gold is the artefact here.
KIN – kin being kind, family, relatives. The mirror reflects the target and makes a copy, so it’s obvious why a mirror was chosen as the artefact.
PEP – pep means to inject a bit of energy or enthusiasm. Firewater – strong liquor.
ROK – rock, It’s a petrifying spell. So stone dust has an obvious relevance here.
NIP – slang - to move quickly or go. I’ll just nip down the shops and get some milk. Sniffing powder – must be a reference to amphetamine or cocaine and effect it has on you.
HUF – huff - meaning to breathe heavily. A horn makes sense as the artefact out of which the blast of air comes.
FIX – fix an object in place. Oak trees as representative of something fixed and unmoving and that’s why an oak sapling is the artefact?
NAP – sending the target to sleep, having a nap. The pendulum swung as aid to hypnosis.
ZEN –from Zen Buddhism. Connected to ideas of entering a trance-like state through meditation and being able to levitate. Look up levitation on wikipedia - there is a connection to Buddhism. I don’t know what a jewel-studded medallion has to do with this, though.
YAZ. I don’t know what this word has to do with invisibility or why it’s a pearl ring. My guess would be it’s connected to in some way to baseball player Carl Yastrzemski. Maybe he could wallop baseballs out of sight, and the pearl in the ring is similar to a small baseball?
SUN – sun jewel needed for a spell causing a blinding bright light.
KID – to kid is to joke about, fool or deceive. I don’t know what connection a bracelet of bones has to this.
RAP – from the word connected to talking. YAP the noise an animal, especially a dog, might make. I don't know why the green-haired wig is the artefact.
ZIP – onomatopoeic – noise of something zipping through the air. I don’t know why a ring of green metal was chosen as the artefact.
FAR – looking far ahead into the future with the traditional crystal ball used for these sorts of things.
RES – resurrection spell. I suppose holy water is relevant here somehow.
ZED – last letter of the alphabet and ultimate spell. Kept as an unknown until the final book.
ZAP - onomatopoeic - the noise electricity or lightning makes
