Does anyone remember this late 80s British TV show presented by Sylvester McCoy? A drama with SF elements would be played out, with viewers offered to phone in at the ending with a choice between alternative endings. Naturally, young people would choose the more fantastic\out-there ones, rather than the 'go home' ones. The second series was more ambitious, with young people writing entire suggestions and endings themselves (multiple young people were credited). link
It wasn't Star Wars, but it worked at the time in spite of (because of?) its cheesiness and gimmicky because gamebooks were in their heyday, and Doctor Who was cool.

Distantly, yes. It was mentioned by someone in one of the interviews for International Gamebook Day last year and so I mentioned in a post that I'd tried to get involved and failed. I really was young when that was on. It might even have been before discovering FF.
