Agree with the above comments. Some FFs might have amazing paragraph 300s but I don't remember most of them at all.
If you had a thread with the most amazing paragraph 400s, Creature of Havoc, Slaves Of The Abyss, maybe.

Agree with the above comments. Some FFs might have amazing paragraph 300s but I don't remember most of them at all. If you had a thread with the most amazing paragraph 400s, Creature of Havoc, Slaves Of The Abyss, maybe. has 460 paragraphs - 460 is still one of the best 'win' endings in the series, though. As for my favourite paragraph 300 (if that's really what jmisbest wants to know), I have no idea. You might as well ask what everyone's favourite, say, paragraph 69 is... |

Picking on paragraph 300 seems completely arbitrary.
What makes a good first paragraph could be worth a thought, though..

I'm slightly surprised that's your view and Greenspine's, and my view on Crimson Tide reference 400 is It's just an instant death reference moderately cleverly inserted in 400 by Paul Mason, it's not so surprising, or long, or special imho.
If you like that sort of thing, why not reference 400 in Citadel of Chaos, where you can beat Balthus Dire but if you have no Levitation spell you have to fight your way back through the entire citadel? That's cooler in my own opinion. |

It's not just any old Instant Death - it's defeat disguised as victory through devious use of FF convention. Citadel's 'You won, but there may be further hassles to come' doesn't compare. |

I don't think that's the best ref in Appointment with F.E.A.R., it has some great instant deaths. One where you're shot by lasers in the back of a van, which comes across as unfair but well-written, and the encounter where you can pit your psi powers against those of the Macro Brain, where instead of the half-expected do-or-die roll you are given a long description of how the Macro Brain hates you and has been plotting against you for many years, and smashes you outright. |

If it's reference 400 endings, Gates of Death's paragraph 400 plays a sneaky trick on the reader by having a disguised bad ending, easily one of the best references in the book, well-written and atmospheric. Who cares, it's an awful gamebook  |

To the 1st question I simply made a mistake, how?, I don't know but I would guess it was caused by the fact that at that point I'd been awake for almost 29 hours with no sleep As for the 2nd question Appointment With FEAR is my favorite FF Book but that doesn't mean it can't have the worst, in my opinion, paragraph 300 in the series, and as it happens it does, I think the saying is fact is stranger then fiction |

So, if people are still interested in the paragraph 400 debate, there are probably quite a few contenders for worst paragraph 400 (best victory reference or not), for me Masks Of Mayhem takes the crown, Star Strider is underwhelming like Star Strider.
I'd think the worst paragraph 300 might be one of the sci-fi based FFs where most references are unexciting.
