Sky Lord's cover has more Fahbad Rednecks than any other book in the entire universe.

You bastards. And we haven't even gotten on to their magicalness and feelability yet. Does this mean "Not bad considering the artist was clearly on drugs."

Favourite Gamebook Series: CRYPT OF THE SORCERER

From all the Fighting Fantasy books the number one and most AMAZING COVER is from puffin - and it is Crypt of the Sorcerer! and the number two is from wizard - and it is Crature of Havoc!

‘crature’ has been looked up 1432 times, is no one's favorite word yet, is on no lists yet, has no comments yet, and is not a valid Scrabble word.

Crature should be a new rating unto itself.
Does this mean "Not bad considering the artist was clearly on drugs." - mightymudworm.
It is not clear if the happy rating refers to the conga line or the side effect of taking said drugs to create such a conga line. In any case, I deem the cover of Citadel of Chaos worthy of 5 Cratures. Keep in mind, this is a better rating than the 4 Cratures that I would give to Citadel of Chaos (Wizard) and the 6 Cratures that I would give to Citadel of Chaos (Ian Miller).
Yes, I'm happy too.

It is rather cute. Clearly the cover for the Wizard edition of Crature of Havoc was based on this.

Isn't it a Skunkbear in Tammy's avatar?

But Crature is obviously of the abominable bunnybear variety.

Couldn't have predicted my innocuous comment/throwaway gag would trigger this discussion.Couldn't have predicted I would have posted this post as well.Couldn't have predicted I would use the phrase "couldn't have predicted" so many times on one post. Okay I'll shut up now.

It is in fact a Skunkbear. I actually own a Skunkbear farm. I milk them, breed them, then let them back out into the wild.

I thought I'd bump this for two reasons: A series of knock-out polls on the Facebook group has these covers contending for the best ever (all the earliest versions of them I think): Forest of Doom City of Thieves Deathtrap Dungeon Titan Island of the Lizard King The Crown of Kings Temple of Terror Night Dragon What do people think of those contenders? Which ones fell too early? Should any of the Scholastic covers be in the running? Wait... no... stop slapping me! I'm still still sane... Maybe the hardcover PoP one? The other reason was that Ian Livingstone just posted this up: (If you can't see the tweet, it says "Deathtrap Dungeon is 35 years old. This was the USA edition with a great cover by celebrated American comic book artist Richard Corben." with this image.) Edit: I slightly regret saying "...the early Puffin covers they weren't great." earlier in the thread – that was maybe a tad glib and mostly wasn't referring to those above. Still, people are a bit sentimental about some of them imo.

I've never liked the covers for City of Thieves, Deathtrap Dungeon, Temple of Terror or Crown of Kings. Especially surprised to see Temple on the list. Forest of Doom and Island of the Lizard King are ok. Night Dragon, now that's a cover I can get behind. Titan also looks great. Do I have a thing for dragons? Maybe.
I must say I like the American cover for Deathtrap Dungeon more. Very Portal of Evil-esque, which is another cover I like.
Since the only thing I contributed to this thread earlier was some silliness, I might as well share my top 5 covers.
Robot Commando Star Strider Daggers of Darkness Legend of the Shadow Warriors Night Dragon

I LOVE the smiley dinosaur in that picture. Who wouldn't want to enter Deathtrap Dungeon to meet him?

What do people think of those contenders? Temple of Terror sticks out to me. It's not bad at all but I don't think it's I'm the same league as the rest and there are many better covers than it not present here. I think the Scholastic Citadel of Chaos is great. I really like the Scholastic covers in general, I just don't think the internal illustrations are great and I hate the cheap paper they're printed on.

I LOVE the smiley dinosaur in that picture. Who wouldn't want to enter Deathtrap Dungeon to meet him? Especially as he waves at you with one of his hands/paws(?) - he oviously wants to meet you as well maybe to become Pit Friends

The original Citadel of Chaos was my least favourite cover, then Black Vein Prophecy.
I do not really like that USA edition of DD either. Not sure why... too 'busy'?, is it because it shows a snapshot of something that never happens in the book? It looks like a queue of monsters waiting to get into a party being held at your house.

Yeah what were they thinking with that CoC cover. That has to be the goofiest expression on that monsters face. Deathmoor, Spellbreaker and Magehunter just dont seem very good to me. The dragon on Magehunter in particular. And Space Assassin seems kind of weak.
Spectral Stalkers and Tower of Destruction have a "what the heck is going on?" feel to them. Having said that, for some reason I like Spectral Stalkers even though its not something I normally would. Perhaps its the Jiminy Crickett wizard guy. Who wouldnt want to hang out with him?
Id say Night Dragon, original House of Hell are my favorites. Dead of Night and Island of the Undead are other ones I like. I also like the sunlight streaming in on Forest of Doom. Too bad they had to cover a lot of it with the title. And a special shout out has to go to City of Thieves. Was there another book in the range that drew people to get it based on the cover more than this one?
Does anyone know of any place to get posters of the original covers? I would love to pick up full size posters of my favorites. A full size poster featuring all the original covers in order would be cool too. I havent had much luck in finding anything.

bloodbeasthandler, you don't like if a cover depicts events that don't happen in the book? You probably won't like this cover of city of thieves then

It may have naff all to do with City of Thieves but it's damn cool all the same.
I always thought the cover of Crimson Tide looked like it belonged to a completely different book.

I always thought the cover of Crimson Tide looked like it belonged to a completely different book. Agreed. What is portrayed does not appear anywhere. But thankfully Fighting Fantazine issue 11 asks Paul Mason about it and he tells us what that picture represents. Seems to be a scene that got cut from the book....

Earlier this year I saw an image popping up in the news regarding overcrowding on Everest, and I couldn't help being reminded of everybody's favourite fighting fantasy cover. Anyone getting conga vibes?

Top 5
Dead of Night Demons of the Deep Seas of Blood Forest of Doom (puffin) Talisman of Death (puffin)
Best wizard cover: Bloodbones
Bottom 5: Erm... Scholastic titles win this hands down, plus there were some awful Wizard covers too (House of Hell probably the worst there). From the original series, I'd say either Citadel of Choas or Master of Chaos

My absolute favourite is Forest of Doom. Though Deathtrap Dungeon is the cover I saw in the school library which got me reading Fighting Fantasy. Here are my favourite 5. (Night Dragon and Blood of the Zombies almost made my top 5.)

(Night Dragon and Blood of the Zombies almost made my top 5.) View AttachmentGood shouts there. Forest of Doom is a great picture, and notice that the title being on a large opaque scroll-like background blots out some of Iain McCaig's lovely depiction of sunlight streaming through the woods? So the original picture is even better that I thought. Jackson and Livingstone's 'statement of intent' that the artwork ought to be really good from the get-go was absolutely the right one, and the reason why Citadel of Chaos' cover got changed.

Eye Of The Dragon's cover is reminiscent of the circa 1990 Knightmare books. Star Strider has an amazing cover - imo the artwork in Star Strider is better than the writing is - but I don't recall encountering the situation shown on the cover in the gamebook.
