Luck

I played FF many moons ago as a young lad and bought my 8 year old a set of 10 books for Xmas. It's brought back a lot of memories!
We were just going through the rules and I am not 100% sure about Luck.
Can someone confirm something for me?
I understand that each time Luck is tested it has to be reduced by 1.
However I am a little unclear regarding adding points on to Luck.
If my initial Luck score is, for example, 8 and during the book I am awarded an extra 2 Luck points, can I add this on to the 8 to make 10? Or can I NEVER exceed the initial score? I assume not as it would mean Luck may get to be over 12 which wouldn't work when testing with 2 dice!
But if someone can clarify this it'd be great. Can my Luck ever be over the initial score?
Cheers,
Phil.

Not unless specifically stated in the text that the bonus in question takes you past your initial score. For instance a lot of the earlier books feature Potions of Fortune which when drunk add 1 to your initial score and raise your current score to that level. But if the text just says something like "add 2 Luck points" then this does mean those 2 can only take you up to your initial score. The same is true for Skill and Stamina in the vast majority of books.

The fact luck is reduced by one every time its tested can be frustrating, especially if the outcome is innocuous. I wish we could have a rule (I've played by this myself as a cheat) where you can choose to be automatically unlucky but keep the luck point.

That would make BVP winnable for people with maximum initial luck, which is a good thing I guess for lucky people.

The luck score always felt to me like such a burden. If there's ever an FF revival with new adventures, I'd happily see it absent.

Can my Luck ever be over the initial score? Depends which book you're playing.
I'm currently in the middle of Space Assassin, which does not state that the Initial scores for Skill or Luck can never be exceeded.
IIRC, I believe there is no restriction with Initial stats in either Seas Of Blood or Star Strider either...

I think this is a good thread to say a lot of my solutions take a line where luck should be minimal so there is a genuine element of uncertainty as to what may happen. Many of my early solutions follow this line namely Warlock, Citadel, Forest, City, Deathtrap, Island, Scorpion and Caverns.
I would suggest this is especially warranted with Deathtrap and Caverns because the gameplay is so linear and determinate.
Nevertheless I would agree insane entries such as Crypt and Spellbreaker should be approached with maximum luck due to the gameplay being loaded in the direction of the egregiously sadistic.
