Where is this at at the moment, Alex? Are there contributions you're still hoping for from the likes of us on here?

Right. Update as of May 2021.
We're not dead. The fanzine isn't dead either! Get word out that we're still on the hunt for material etc.

Right now we're aiming for a late July release date - fingers crossed we achieve that. In the meantime, get in touch about submitting stuff for issues #18 & 19!

Right now we're aiming for a late July release date - fingers crossed we achieve that. In the meantime, get in touch about submitting stuff for issues #18 & 19! Back in 2016 I decided to turn Caverns of the Snow Witch into a novel for my NaNoWriMo project. To my surprise, it worked. I managed to get approximately 60,000 words out of that adventure (my first NaNo win, after 9 years of trying!), though I changed and added some things, tweaked a couple of characters and now have plans to spin off Ash (Redswift's brother) into a short story, to deal with the back story I invented for Redswift. I noticed that the end of CotSW has the character ending up in the vicinity of Stonebridge, so I decided to have him send his treasure home to his family (come on, he wouldn't have abandoned the gold and other stuff; besides I gave this character a wife and son, living in Port Blacksand), and get involved in trying to find the warhammer. Again... I'm tweaking some things that didn't quite make sense, for the sake of a coherent story. This project got stalled, as I got sidetracked with a computer game (King's Heir: Rise to the Throne) and have been writing a series of novels about that for the past (almost) three years. Right now my CotSW novel is just sitting on one of my computers, unedited, since the only place I know of where I could share it would be one of the fanfic websites. It wouldn't be the first Fighting Fantasy story there, as I've read a couple of others (the one about daily life in Port Blacksand was a hoot). I've also got a story started that combines Selator's and Poomchukker's quests in a novelization of Scorpion Swamp (hey, if you're going to map the Swamp while looking for an Antherica berry, you might as well get paid for it). I've had decades to think up stories long and short about some of these gamebooks. I always give my characters names and backgrounds and a reason for adventuring other than "fame and fortune"; for instance, my Sorcery! character goes adventuring because she's trying to find her parents who disappeared 20 years earlier in a magical experiment that went haywire; she's sure they're alive, but has no idea where they might be, so in addition to retrieving the Crown of Kings, she's hoping to make progress on her search.

I'm an illustrator with plenty of'zine worthy material knocking around. Certainly a few column inches. What kind of stuff do you need?

Usually I try and match art to the material rather than use generic fantasy art. But if you are keen to contribute get in touch via email (editor@fightingfantazine.co.uk).

Right now my CotSW novel is just sitting on one of my computers, unedited, since the only place I know of where I could share it would be one of the fanfic websites. 60,000 words is way too big for the magazine. Ideally you'd want to aim for something shorter (original) of around 5000-6000 words. Those 60,000 words would be far less after editing. Winning NaNoWriMo depends on word count, so there are probably some sections that are a bit repetitious. When you're pressed for time and trying to write as much as you can as fast as you can to get that minimum of 1667 words/day, there's not always time to make sure each new day's worth of words gel seamlessly with what happened before. I suppose it might be a tradeoff between what can be edited out and the original material I added to flesh out the characters a bit. I developed a fondness for Redswift, and have been thinking of writing a much shorter story about Ash (his brother) and the aftermath of what happened in the game (I'm assuming Ash will go home at some point and tell everyone what happened to Redswift; there's a story there that's been hanging around in my head for all these years, so I'd like to get it written. I wasn't seriously asking if you'd consider this prose adaptation for the magazine, as it is indeed too long. Even the old pulps wouldn't publish a story that long in the same issue, or at least I don't recall reading that they did. But a story of 5000-6000 words about Ash and Redswift and their people would be doable. What I have in mind isn't part of any gamebook, other than the basic events of Redswift being enslaved, escaping, dying, and Ash's encounter with the CotSW character - a summary of that would only take a few paragraphs, and then on with the original material. Or maybe some vignette about another of some gamebook's characters to expand their story a little. I like RPG characters to be more than a list of stats and equipment and money. Granted, there are adventurers who just want to find treasure and spend it on living high until it's gone and they want more. But there are others who go adventuring for completely different reasons. I've written characters at both ends of the motive-scale and points inbetween. Writing original material to expand on the events of the gamebooks is why I've been desperate for information on a map of Stonebridge, if it exists. I've written some material that I intend as a bridge story between Caverns of the Snow Witch and Forest of Doom (I've no idea if they fit together in terms of official chronology, but they do in terms of location so I've decided to use the same character for both, and give him a bit of downtime in Stonebridge. After all, he did make friends with someone who lives there, and it's so soon after their friend Redswift died... anyway, if anyone's made a map or even some notes that go beyond the gamebook itself, it would really help. I'm not confident of how well I'd do in making it up myself, as I'm not very familiar with dwarven societies.

Couldn't he submit it in segments?

Maybe include my Hidden Adventures puzzles? I could do a new one for each issue if there's any interest.

Anybody willing to review Green's "Curse of the Vampire" or one of the Vulcan-verse titles recently published?

I know it doesn't work this way, but I nominate dragonwarrior8 to review Curse of the Vampire. I do so because: a) he has already posted that he has purchased the book; and b) I've been using the reviews on his site to guide my gamebook purchases, and he hasn't steered me wrong yet!

How many words would you want for a review? Depends on what you are reviewing. It would be either 300, 500 or 1100 words.
