Does anyone think the following are good plot changes to justify doing certain books as part of The Basic to Epic Challenge?
In Talismen of Death have The Gods of Orb and Titan work together to send you from Titan to Orb rather then from Earth to Titan and as a reward give you A Crate of Limitless Items that can hold 5 items, even weapons and armour, but only counts as 1 and if you lose it you lose everything in it plus another reward in the form of 1,000 Gold Coins
In Armies of Death rather then do the very risky Trial of Champions ignore the castle being build and have you hired to assemble a army and defeat The Shadow Deamon(name) then if you win get a reward of 2,000 Gold Coins
In Legend of Zagor rather then start on/in Armarilia have Yaztromo and Nicomedeus on The Titan Side work together with Armarilia's 2 greatest Wizards to send you from Titan to Armarilia then if you win get a reward of 2,000 Gold Coins

Flavour rewards are simply there to appease oneself but should not affect the challenge in any way as that would be creating a whole set of other rules that are not part of any adventure. If you get to Epic in one attribute, the challenge ends as soon as you complete the book successfully. If you want to say you end your adventures with 2 million gold pieces, a castle on a high hill, an army of strongarms, and a harem of elvish maids, that's fine as none of it affects the challenge. If you want to continue the challenge, you would start from Basic again as a new hero. The new challenge is to get to Epic again but with a different attribute AND you are not allowed to use any of the books used as your previous Epic heroes. This is why the challenge helps if you use as few books as possible. At the moment, I'm trying to get to Epic with my third hero, again not using any books I completed before. I think it IS possible but bloody difficult, and working out what books to use for each hero becomes a puzzle in itself.

The Keep of the Lich-Lord put me over the top, even though I played a pretty sub-par game after I got into the keep. I chose to fight Mortis rather than use the Chain of Argolis to bind him, and it was almost a disaster. Here’s how I finished up: Skill: Initial=10, Current=9 Stamina: Initial=14, Current=5 Luck: Initial=14, Current=14 Provisions=11 Gold=120 Brass Ring Ring of Destiny (whenever lucky at testing your luck you do not have to subtract a luck point) Ring of Communing Luck Spell Gem (restores lost luck points equal to half your initial luck score) Eye of the Cyclops jewel Five Items 1) enchanted sword (+2 to initial skill) 2) gauntlet of weapon strength (+1 to attack strength) 3) Hand of Glory (-1 stamina at the start of any battle and all opponents -1 skill for the duration of the battle) 4) Chain of Argolis (bind any single opponent at the start of any battle) 5) polished shield (-1 skill for any single undead opponent) Well done! Which books did you use? Care to do the bonus challenge?

Which books did you use? Care to do the bonus challenge? I used six books: 1) The Forest of Doom; 2) Moonrunner; 3) Scorpion Swamp; 4) Legend of the Shadow Warriors; 5) The Warlock of Firetop Mountain; and 6) The Keep of the Lich-Lord. I'm intrigued by the bonus challenge. I think I used up most of the easier books and hints from this thread, so starting again without using the books I already used would be pretty challenging for me. I might take it up after a bit of a break.

When you trade/sell items with a value, do you gain any number of items worth that value in return, or do you only exchange on a one to one basis? (E.g. With the Eye of the Cyclops worth 50 Gold, can I buy all the items in Knights of Doom's market stalls up to 50 gold?) I would say it doesn't need to be on a one-to-one basis but you don't get any change. So if you traded it in a market in exchange for 47gp worth of goods, you don't get 3gp change.

I think I'm gonna need a comprehensive set of rules as different books present different problems.
How would you deal with situations where you begin the book enslaved, captured, or otherwise destitute? There are books like Trial of Champions and Island of the Undead where normally you would begin the adventure with next to nothing. Should this be ignored so that you can keep your hard-earned items?

Maybe some rule like you can get them back after completing it?

At the moment, I'm trying to get to Epic with my third hero, again not using any books I completed before. I think it IS possible but bloody difficult, and working out what books to use for each hero becomes a puzzle in itself. Okay, so over the last 6 days I've played 16 FF adventures (and failed at about 5 others) to try and solve this, and I can happily say that getting 3 different Heroes to Epic for each of the 3 attributes (whilst using as few books as I could) IS definitely possible. Took me ages to work out but did it eventually and it was really fun. The Epic path on getting Luck to 13 was probably the easier of the three, followed by Skill. Gonna rest a bit from all this now.

I think you should go hardcore on this. Players forfeit all of their equipment if they choose to play one of the 'captivity' books-- Demons of the Deep, Trial of Champions, Beneath Nightmare Castle, or Master of Chaos. Same thing if they choose Creature of Havoc or Island of the Undead. Adds to the challenge.
