Never played them, always wondered what they were like. There's Seas of Blood and Rebel Planet too isn;t there? I had an Amstrad 6128 and since it was a tenner for cassettes and fifteen quid for disks in those days I couldn't afford many games!

My understanding is they took the gamebooks and transferred them into tape, with no change except where the system was not up to replicating the original. With the 80s limitations they must surely only be interesting to dedicated collectors.

I seem to remember we had Seas of Blood for ZX Spectrum. My only memory of it is the unbearable thrill of new-game anticipation while it loaded from tape, followed by misery and utter frustration at not being able to progress at all beyond the first screen. After that, I don't think it ever got played again.
(For some reason, I thought it had a parser. I could be wrong.)

Are you aware of this? You can now see what it would have been like if you'd managed to get past the first screen:

You can now see what it would have been like if you'd managed to get past the first screen: My reaction is torn between amazement at seeing this phenomenal thing, and the truth this antique is a bit rubbish. God, things have moved on in 35 years, haven't they? I wonder whether people will feel the same way about the Tin Man apps in 35 years, when they are playing in holosuites?

Bless the people on Youtube like RZX Archive who upload this stuff. Are you aware of this? You can now see what it would have been like if you'd managed to get past the first screen: Now I would have been about 6 or 7 at this time, and there was a whole complicated rigmarole / ritual of my Da bringing the computer out, wiring it up, plugging it into the family telly to play games. Pretty sure he never used to read the instructions to anything, which would be how the all-important "SAIL" command here remained tragically untried. But I'm not sure possessing this vital knowledge would really have rendered this experience substantially more rewarding, in any case. It's not exactly Infocom, is it?
