Last round crypt of the sorcerer was eliminated. I can probably guess the outcome of this one, but we'll run with it anyway.

Crypt is a poor book but I did think it would survive more than two rounds. Stuck with Robot Commando again, though looks like the other Sci fi offering will be going first.

Crypt is a poor book but I did think it would survive more than two rounds. Stuck with Robot Commando again, though looks like the other Sci fi offering will be going first. As a story, as a read, as a book which expands the world of Allansia, I think COTS it is very good, and I always enjoyed it when it came out. And I still do now thanks to those reasons plus the nostalgia and the fact that I just fiddle the dice rolls (as I obviously did back then too!). It is similar to Caverns of the Snow Witch really whcih also got given the bullet early on. We are getting a glimpse in these polls and the comments what folk's criteria are for what in their opinion makes a good FF book. I would say that on these boards, the game aspect of a given book is weighted more highly than it might be elsewhere. Broken gameplay and/or broken mechanism = broken book + a vote accordingly.

Masks of Mayhem, for broken gameplay. Too unfair.

I'll forgive a linear tale with tough dice rolls if it's well written and tells a thumping good story. Crypt is rubbish as a game (and the thing with the Bonekeeper is unforgivable), but the actual adventure is a real epic quest, iconic and legendary. Probably the last time that was true in FF, and certainly Ian Livingstone's last gasp of greatness. Or even competence.
I absolutely adore Masks Of Mayhem, and I'd only change three things: the dice roll for the orb, the rather vague instruction to identify the traitor at the end, and the verbose, overwritten, lengthy paragraph 400. It was so wonderful to have Russ Nicholson (best FF artist bar none) doing the illustrations again, in another well-written and memorable quest storyline, and the symbols that represented the masks were fascinating to child-Wilf back in the 80s. After Creature Of Havoc, it's probably my favourite book in this round.

Probably the last time that was true in FF, and certainly Ian Livingstone's last gasp of greatness. Or even competence. I think Return to Firetop Mountain is better than Crypt but to each their own. Certainly I'd rank Crypt above Armies of Death, Blood of the Zombies or Port of Peril. Not sure about Eye of the Dragon or Assassins of Allansia.

Crypt is an excellent read, but a rubbish game. Agree about the bonekeeper. I love masks as well, but the dice roll for the orb pushed it into unplayable. And after the build up to get the horn, the best thing to do is say 'actually, you know what, forget it'. I couldn't work out who the traitor was because I thought it was 49.

If Crypt was a novel, it would be good. As a film or limited series, possibly even better. As a gamebook, it is exhausting. Though compared to some other Livingstone efforts (Assassins, Eye, Blood, the one with the cars, maybe Port) it's not that bad...
Going with Robot Commando again which I find dull.
