After over 250 votes, we have narrowed down the first 40 books to these 8:
Deathtrap dungeon House of hell Talisman of death Sword of the samurai Creature of havoc Beneath nightmare castle Slaves of the abyss Vault of the vampire
I am sure that some people's personal favourites will not be on this list! However, I do think that this is a good representation of ff at it's finest.

Actually i'm very surprised to see books I don't particularly find great in this top 8 (Sword and Slaves)

Sword of the Samurai does seem very out of place among the giants.

The round when Seas of Blood and Appointment with FEAR went down together was devastating. I think that Sword of the Samurai reaped the benefit.

I think Sword benefited from the number of people here who disapprove of FF being anything other than sword-and-sorcery fantasy (except when it's House of Hell).

Appointment with fear didn't last very long, and rebel planet lost out to demons of the deep. I would have thought AwF and Rebel would have lasted longer, but I'm not unhappy SotS is in the last 8 of this group.

I imagine if it had been a "vote for your favourite" poll, the marmite books like Appointment with Fear would have done better.

I love how Thomson and Smith come in to FF and take everyone's lunch money. Both Talisman and Sword are excellent.

I think Sword benefited from the number of people here who disapprove of FF being anything other than sword-and-sorcery fantasy (except when it's House of Hell). I think that could be argued if Temple of Terror (the ONLY "Sword & Sorcery" book in the teens) was in its place... and if the horror themed Beneath Nightmare Castle wasn't one of the next batch to get through.

That seems to be taking a very narrow view of what constitutes sword-and-sorcery fantasy. I'd say that Sword and Beneath still fit into that category, even if they're not bog-standard Tolkien-influenced fare.
