If I had to choose one it would be Legend of the Shadow Warriors because it maxes out on most of my criteria when I rate a FF book.

Not even an attempt at a surprise I see.

Howl of The Werewolf.
Dripping with atmosphere, fantastic confrontations and a real sense of progression from the frightened waif you start out as to a Huge Jacked Man monster-slayer by the finale.
The Lycan upgrades and flintlock pistol mechanics can turn hopeless battles around and the fact that it can be quick-played to the end or indulge you in a longer, golden path campaign.
Never felt more like an adventurer than in this Jonathan Greene tour de force.

Not including Sorcery, I'd have to go with Deathtrap Dungeon. It's just the ultimate dungeon crawl with a great concept, fantastic atmosphere and illustrations.

Howl of the Werewolf. My essay in Fighting Fantazine 5 explains why.

IMO, the Sorcery! epic is the best thing ever to have come out of FF. I'm not sure about my single favourite book - but put a gun to my head and I, too, would say Howl of the Werewolf. I'm hoping it wins the poll.

Until now - the very best book - only one, choosed by each person: ... Howl of the Werewolf (3x) ... Deathtrap Dungeon ... Legend of the Shadow Warriors ... Siege of Sardath ... Talisman of Death ... Crypt of the Sorcerer
I believe that this list will not surpass the 10 books (maybe with more repetitions). I also believe that for one person nominate one single book as his own best, that is a sign that that book has to have something really special within it.

There are very good books, maybe in the top 10 of a lot of people, that will never enter in this list, because one book has to have something extra special to be nominated by one person as above all the others.

The exquisitely fiendish, satisfyingly atmospheric and extremely rewarding to complete Siege of Sardath.

Outside of the main FF series, it would have to be MAELSTROM.
The new issue of SFX has a nice one page article on this gamebook.

I seem to recall some mates of James Wallis from Eton knocked it up (Puffin being suckers for U writers). But I can't be bitchy, because it was what I call a 'culture game', written a number of years before I even coined the term.

It was an RPG, but there was a gamebook in it. A strong contender for the record of 'highest number of deliberately inaccessible sections'.

Main thing about Maelstrom that I remember is it was quite realistic in terms of wounds, which meant that it was less engaging as an RPG, as the majority of an adventure, in theory, would be being laid up in bed with a herb poultice.

Unless one shifted the nature of 'adventure' from 'series of violent conflicts' to something else?

My favourite book, like my favourite song, might vary from day to day and mood to mood.
Today and for many other days it is and has been Deathtrap Dungeon. For various reasons.
So put me down for DD please.

An amazing book, by the way.

Several people have said they like the first one they read, and I would have to say the same. The Warlock of Firetop Mountain not only introduced me to gamebooks, but also to role-playing in general. It fired up my imagination like no subsequent books did. I hadn't even read any Tolkien before this, so it led me to his world as well, and from there to the over-all concept of world-creation by authors.

I have a great fondness for the first book I read, which also has imaginative monsters, a memorable villain, suberb interior artwork, and mostly bug-free gameplay which gives a 7-14-7 character a fighting chance of success.* I also have a great fondness for all those books I read as a child (basically the earliest ones, but I had all of them up to Slaves Of The Abyss - I definitely drew the line in the right place!).
And yet my favourite is one of the later Puffin titles (book 49), one of the last ones I found a copy of, and one for which I have no nostalgia whatsoever. (This is also true of The Crimson Tide, which is also in my top three.)
It's rare for me to be unffected by nostalgia with these sort of questions, which I guess stands as a testament to the quality of the book I have picked.
(Ask me for a top ten, though, and my childhood favourites will all start to feature, regardless of their objective merits!)
* Citadel Of Chaos.
