True that. Even weirder in those cases is how your character will usually elect to proceed anyway to the villain's lair even though he/she didn't manage to find the items he/she knows it should have brought along in the first place.

Or starting a trek across Kakhabad knowing a shedload of spells which require certain items, and leaving without a single one.
And not being able to pick up a pebble or some sand for them except at certain very specific points.

Eye of the dragon is hilarious. It's full of comedy. I think my favourite is the swift and exact appraisal of the worth of the treasure in the introduction. Actually, everything about the introduction is funny.
I think my favourite book is Night of the Necromancer. I enjoyed being a ghost, and I found the story very intriguing.
Other potential candidates would be Moonrunner, Howl of the Werewolf, Night Dragon, Legend of Zagor, Stormslayer. Those five I would say are a step up from the rest, for me.

I like Night of the Necromancer too. But for me as a kid I always loved Robot Commando, my first book. Played it like 50 times, was and still is awesome. Tower of Destuction was another favourite. Now I have a bunch of favourites: Creature of Havoc, Deathtrap Dungeon, House of Hell, City of Thieves, Rebel Planet, Night of the Necromancer and the Sorcery! series.

I'll put it this way: Favourites from my younger days that remain today: The Warlock of Firetop Mountain, Deathtrap Dungeon, House of Hell, Sorcery! (all 4, but especially Kharé), special mention to Phantoms of Fear;
Favourites from the last few years, after rediscovering FF: Black Vein Prophecy, The Crimson Tide, Vault of the Vampire, Slaves of the Abyss, Beneath Nightmare Castle, Dead of Night, Legend of the Shadow Warriors, Howl of the Werewolf...
Creature of Havoc is a stange beast; I had it while young, but didn't enjoy it until I revisited it much later, as an adult (and with a corrected version)
I'll stop here before I name them all.

i mark gamebooks for Gameplay (replayability, balance/fairness, entertainment) and Storytelling (plot, atmosphere, creativity). there isn't yet a 'perfect' FF book despite some very convincing arguments on this forum, but i prefer books that have either a good mixture of the above aspects or thoroughly excels in one of them.
in no order mine are: Deathtrap Dungeon, Legend of the Shadow Warriors, Black Vein Prophecy, Dead of Night, Knights of Doom.
honorable mentions: Portal of Evil, Moonrunner, Sorcery! series, City of Thieves. The Riddling Reaver despite not being a solo gamebook in the series also deserves a mention for it's brilliance.

Vags, because of you i'm currently reading crypt of the sorcerer. It's very good indeed, but you must have others you like. I mean it's not the best by Ian Livingstone.

It's very good indeed, but you must have others you like. I mean it's not the best by Ian Livingstone. Deathtrap Dungeon is Unique. City of Thieves is a Miracle. But the Profundity of Razaak has no comparison around all the Fighting Fantasy Universe.

Crown of Kings for me - it's just got such an atmosphere of constant danger and the characters and encounters are so colourful.
Other favourites: Citadel of Chaos City of Thieves Deathtrap Dungeon House of Hell Talisman of Death Appointment with FEAR Trial of Champions Stealer of Souls Daggers of Darkness Portal of Evil Vault of the Vampire Black Vein Prophecy Spectral Stalkers The Crimson Tide Moonrunner Return to Firetop Mountain Bloodbones
Two of my favourites when I was younger which I'm a bit less enamoured with these days would be Scorpion Swamp and Space Assassin. Not that I dislike either one now.

Forgot about Daggers of Darkness, I did enjoy that one a lot. I'll see one day if any of those new ones I mentioned will hold over time.

that was me trying my best to wrangle out a more in depth answer AND he still failed. we can safely assume that Vags knows what a Thesaurus is, and the end of me throwing candy to Sourbelly and Fatnose.

A post asking each member about his favourite Fighting Fantasy Book and why. Nope.
I'd rather eat a mouse cooked in my urine.

Early ones
City Of Thieves Deathtrap Dungeon Sorcery
Later one
Vault Of The Vampire
Most recent
Night Of The Necromancer
PS I acquired the Wizard version Crypt Of The Sorcerer some time ago just before it sold out. I bought it totally blind as to what it was likewise with Spellbreaker(Dicebreaker?). I cannot believe what dire drivel it is. I take it by this time Ian Livingstone was simply about churning out seemingly random encounters to meet a publication deadline. The 0.3% probability of completing it with 12/24/12 seems entirely plausible. I have only managed it once with 'accelerated' dice rolls followed by 'inserting' them into a standard game. The amount of dice rolls involved would have taken years in a 'true game' and only possible if you were long term unemployed or independently wealthy. Coupled with the complete absence of the wonderful atmosphere generated by City or Deathtrap he deserves to be put on one of those spikes in a failing path in Shamutanti. At least Spellbreaker has a wonderful 'feel' even if it is broken.

I had more fun reading/dying in Spellbreaker than Crypt, that's for sure.

'Masks Of Mayhem' is my favourite. Not for the gameplay (jings, of course not! ) But for the story, which develops nicely, the illustartions, the map, the locations etc.
I also think Talisman Of Death is an incredibly well written gamebook. On the old forum I did a 'Complete the books in order thread' and I remember having a Vag style 'Mixing reality with gamebook' moment during a read through of that book, I found myself so well immersed....

'Masks Of Mayhem' is my favourite.
"Masks of Mayhem" is a prodigy. I always loved this book. The atmosphere of reality is very, very high. Nice to see a first person ranks it as the favourite. I remember that when I came here and I realized that among all the members, I was the only one who had "Crypt of the Sorcerer" as my favourite book, I was stunned and amazed.

Crypt of the Sorcerer - Not the best Storyline (Magical Deathtrap Dungeon); Not the best Atmosphere (Magical City of Thieves); But the Best Background added to the Greatest Evil Enemy gives to "Crypt of the Sorcerer" the title of the best gamebook of all. Unique Note 10.

Vag... Zagor, Balthus Dire and Zharradan Marr, find your post offensive... It is one of the reasons that I think that the Creature is much better than the Creator. From a dimension far, far beyond the creator. Incomprehensible to me the desire to give new life to Zagor instead of Razaak, this one incredibly mightier and higher. Incomprehensible. What Livingstone sees i do not see, what i see, he does not see.

As an adult:
Crimson Tide & Slaves of the Abyss (yeah both Paul Mason, deal with it). I also reckon any FF books that put me in a deep state of contemplation after reading the final paragraph leave a very strong impression with me. Crimson Tide also has that evil para 400 trap that chilled me to the bone when I first read it. Not many FF's have got me like that!
As a kid/teen:
Forest of Doom & Creature of Havoc. Forest of Doom didn't make a hell of a lot of sense, but Yaztromo's 'shop', the illusion of open exploration and the variety of encounters made it a fun read with a decent amount of replayability. Probably the book I have played the most number of times.
For me, Creature of Havoc is perhaps my favourite book overall. Playing a killing machine was fun as a teen, and as an adult the game mechanics are just very fresh and original. The secret language, use of Grog, dungeon layout (although flawed), the unique killing blow and damage rules, the 460 paragraphs and the compelling story (towards the end particularly) all provide a great deal of satisfaction once you work them out and encourage the reader to come back and 'have another go'. Ultimately I think it has something for every type of player and promises a unique experience from the rest of the series.

Zagor can't be killed with a horn. Zagor - Looking him i see a very powerfull man, but i do not feel respect for him; Razaak - Looking him, i see a power beyond a human understanding, and i do feel an immense respect for him.
