E. Packard is often but not always the better author of the two, with his more mature and consistent tone, but R.A. Montgomery's very fantastic work has a definite charm about it. There is a collaboration of the two which works well (Mutiny In Space), the two styles working harmoniously together, I don't know if there were any others and how successful they were. I've heard E. Packard's new 'Chooseco' works haven't been quite as good as his CYOA works.

I've read less than a quarter of the CYOA main range, and around half of the ones I have read are by Packard, which may skew my opinions somewhat.
Still, Packard wrote Hyperspace and Mountain Survival, which are among my favourite CYOAs. And while I'm not sure which of his books I'd rank lowest, I do know that my least favourite CYOA overall is War with the Evil Power Master, which is by Montgomery. Of the other Montgomery titles I've read, only The Abominable Snowman stands out in a positive way (though I will concede that the main obstacle to my taking one of Montgomery's other books seriously is not really the author's fault - an American unfamiliar with 1980s British chat show hosts isn't likely to get why the name 'Wogan' isn't ideal for a brilliant scientist).
