Hi I am doing a fifth place poll to find which two of the five Fifth placers will make it into the top twenty. Picking two out of those five is VERY difficult. I've played and enjoyed all five. (Though I haven't completed Crown of Kings yet, so it is at a disadvantage.)Citadel of Chaos and Kharé: Cityport of Traps for me. It's Jackson time!

I wonder if you think I should do a small poll with all the least voted gamebooks to find the worst?

I’d enjoy a Best of the Worst poll. Sounds fun, giving a chance for those gamebooks that were never going to be in a top 5 from 20 to shine. 😀 (Maybe exclude the Clash of the Princes and Warlock magazine entries?) A Worst of the Worst (rather than Best of the Worst) poll sounds a little mean spirited for Christmas, though. 🎅🏻😬

Agreed, interesting idea. If I've counted right, there were only seven books that didn't receive a single vote, so it was quite nice to see the majority of them getting a little love. Of those seven, Freeway Fighter and The Rings of Kether would both be in the top half of the rankings for me - it just so happened that they were up against all of the early classics so never really stood a chance.

Good idea to put all the 5th place contenders into one poll rather than have numerous tie-breakers. I went with Talisman and Crown.

I went with Temple and Citadel. Perhaps controversially I have never been a huge fan of the playability of the Sorcery series.

Haha this could end in a tie as well. Sorcery! Crown Of Kings is well-written but not as epic as it should be, it also has some Jackson tropes I dislike (sadistic instant deaths, no-win situations, linear and dark). Temple Of Terror OTOH is Livingstone at his best. I like Talisman Of Death but it feels like a Virtual Reality\Way Of The Tiger mix-up rather than being the best FF gamebook out of these. Not a fan of either city adventures or linear ones so S!KCOT won't be getting my vote.

FF which haven't gotten one vote:
Freeway Fighter Rings Of Kether Star Strider Gates Of Death Clash Of The Princes: The Warlock's Way Clash Of The Princes: The Warrior's Way Eye Of The Dragon Mini Edition
The three sci-fi ones here are all well-written. I kind of knew all along Star Strider wouldn't get one vote - but it deserves praise for all sorts of things, world-building, artwork, humour, originality, difficulty and writing. It almost seems unfair Blood Of the Zombies, Sky Lord, Chasms Of Malice and Eye Of The Dragon have votes while these three don't - which is another reason a 'worst of the worst' poll would be inadvisable. I kind of like sci-fi FF, I like Andrew Chapman, and I don't think Gates Of Death is entirely irredeemable.

I voted for blood of the zombies. I think it is a fun book. Not the rules, obviously, but the writing and illustrations are top notch. Gates of death, on the other hand, has poor rules, poor writing and poor illustrations.

I like the full version of Eye much more than the original (which was basically 2 straight corridors and if you chose the wrong one, you get zapped back to the start with a Skill penalty).

As I recall, it was more like two forking corridors, with a set-up along the lines of: C1, F1 - Leads to Instant Death C1, F2 - Get zapped back to the start with a Skill penalty C2, F1 - Leads to Instant Death C2, F2 - True Path Not that that's a whole lot better.

The original EotD was not really a properly designed bookventure, it was more a proof of concept, a taster. Similar to the one in Maelstrom, which if I recall is damn difficult because you need to basically do the adventure to get the gold and then go back out to buy the McGuffin and re-do everything.

In my best of the worst poll I will also include ones with just one or 2 votes. Which funnily enough adds up to 20.

This is not looking good. It could be another tie!

There are three FFs with one or no votes in your best of the worst poll (Gates Of Death, Clash Of The Princes The Warlock's Way, Eye Of The Dragon Mini Edit) so you could always do a poll with the top three here replacing the others in the Best Of The Worst. I think that's just a coincidence, though.

It now looks like someone changed their vote from Citadel to Crown to make a three way tie!

It now looks like someone changed their vote from Citadel to Crown to make a three way tie! Not anymore - Talisman Of Death (the only one of the five not written by the two founders of FF) has leapt into the lead! Second and third place hotly contested. When will the Fifth Place Poll and Best Of The Worst close, or just when King Gillibran feels like it (maybe around New Year)?

I was waiting for it to stop being a tie before I closed it. I will close it now.

Wow, that was close. Citadel had led pretty much throughout, only to drop down into third right at the end. And Talisman had looked out of the running (both in this poll and in the original best of 1-20 poll) a few times, only to clinch first place at the, um, death.
