Fighting Fantazine Adventure Playthroughs

In playing the occasional FFzine adventure as a Frenzy entry, I have become increasingly tempted to play through them all (something I have not done). Of course I could go it alone, but may I suggest a slow but steady trek through the adventures with whoever’s keen. Not a competition like the Frenzy: my idea (although it could certainly be modified) is that each month we move onto the next FFzine adventure, allowing say three weeks for folks to be able to play it a few times to get a good sense of it (and for folks in the Frenzy to be able to find time!), and then in the last week of the month share our playthroughs and our thoughts, and discuss/praise/constructively criticise (I say knowing several of the authors are among you!). Yes, someone could smash through multiple playings very early in the month and be ready to discuss, but I wondered if the discussion’d be more lively if it were more concentrated and after everyone had a chance to give the adventure a crack. (And there’d be nothing to stop the conversation continuing over into the next month as we move onto playing the next adventure.)

Basically: are there any takers? I’d say if we had at least half a dozen players (the more the merrier, naturally) then we’d have quorum

It's an interesting idea. Count me in.

While there'd be no way of 'policing' it, I'd recommend that participants avoid looking at the available solutions for at least the first couple of attempts at each adventure. There's a lot - positive and negative - that people can miss if they only focus on a pre-determined path, especially if the adventure allows for greater flexibility, as some of them do.

ETA: I'll leave this where it was posted, as it might get more attention in this section of the forum, but the actual discussions should really go in the Fantazine section of the forum.

Ah yes, it was my intention to propose that folks head to the individual threads for posting playthroughs etc, and to use this thread as an organising tool

Given that it will be more about discussion than competition, I think it should be fine for people to play in whichever way they choose and that could broaden the perspectives brought to the table. The guy who automatically wins every fight and passes every skill check will likely have different things to praise and criticise than the guy who meticulously follows every rule. Following a guide will give you a different experience to exploring on your own. It might be interesting to see how different play styles influence people's assessments of the books.

I'm reminded of the fan at an earlier forum who used a solution on their first attempt at Temple of Terror and then complained about how easy the book was.

I don't really know which point to start criticising that fan - not merely because they found the guide let them instantly work out the true path, but because Temple Of Terror is difficult even with very good stats. "This guide helped me complete Crypt Of The Sorceror after 525 tries with a 12 24 12 Avatar. Too easy".

   Champskees solution puts your odds of success with a maxed out Skill 10 Avatar at barely 32.5% so I don't know how anyone would figure that was easy!

Sounds fun, I still haven't made the time to play any of the Fantazine adventures and this will give me a much needed nudge to actually get around to it. Count me in!
