As a teen I sometimes used to play an FF, then if I won, carry over the character equipment into the next FF I played. Did anyone else ever do this? Obviously this is a form of cheating, but in mitigation FF can be a particularly hard series.

As an adult I did this recently! Couple of years ago I believe.
I even carried over the Wulfen Sword and the lycan stat buffs from 'Howl' into multiple books; no-one can match me for cheating!

I kind of did the same thing some time ago with my Basic to Epic game. You start with any book but at basic minimum stats (roll for anything else and choose your potion normally etc). Only if you finish the adventure successfully can you carry over stats and equipment to the next book. The goal was to get your Initial Skill or Luck to 13 or your Initial Stamina to 26 and complete the book. The were some other rules as well but it was really fun and made it a bit strategic in working out which books would allow you to progress. The fewer books you had to complete to get to your goal, the more successful you were.

Yep, you've reminded me I did that too. Especially with the Ian Livingstone Allansia-based ones which seemed connected - Caverns of the Snow Witch, Forest of Doom, Temple of Terror. And then FF21 and 36.

Yes, I used to do that, but I didn't like how the books couldn't take into account that you had items from previous books.
This is partly why I am working on SCRAWL, my solo RPG system.

I did it sometimes; it kind of graduated into a set group of Stats that I used for every adventure rather than rolling all the time:- Skill 9, Stamina 18, Luck 11.
If you are going to do it you really need to 'design ahead' I think, as in plan 5 books in a series and space out the bonuses, items, and skills etc.

I included a point in the rules that you couldn't use this strategy 😜 Nor was it okay to use the stat reroll in Demons of the Deep. The idea was to go through a journey rather than looking for shortcuts to get to Epic level.

Do you suspend the rule about not exceeding your initial values or do you have to only power up with bonuses that explicitly allow you to exceed them?

I never did do a comprehensive set of the rules because I'd have had to go through each book's rules meticulously but the general overall idea is there. It's probably better if you went to that thread instead. Just search for Basic to Epic.

From a story perspective, starting at Secrets of Salamonis is a good place to start a single play through character. Assuming you finish with sk 11, st 12, luck 6, and the 'lucky' blessing works only until the end of that quest, you can assign Amonour points for saving Prince Jared and continue building your character by adding to the starting stats at the end of each quest.
Return Prince Jared - 6 Amonour points Kill Balthus Dire - 8 Amonour points Find lost hammer of Stonebridge - 4 Amonour points Defeat Zanbar Bone, stop Malbordus, etc
Rules around items or armour should carry across books.
Eventually you get a maxed out hero, at which point you also should have enough items with attack strength modifiers that maybe, just maybe, you can take on Razaak.

Even a maxed out hero can die through getting stung by too many Harpoon Flies or the many instances of 'roll this or die' before you get anywhere near Razaak.
