I think it would be cool if after all this polls are finished we did a favourite set of illustrations but by artists.

Most of these are very highly-rated, except for Island Of The Lizard King and Warlock Of Firetop Mountain. I don't doubt there's elements of nostalgia and populism about Warlock, the illustrations are good but not brilliant imo. Island Of The Lizard King has a number of memorable encounters such as The Lizard King, The Shaman, The Giant Crab and the Black Lion. Warlock is definitely amazing but it has exactly the nervousness and even amateurism you'd expect from go one in any series. I really think gamebooks like Citadel Of Chaos and Deathtrap Dungeon were what saved this series from flopping like so many other '80s gamebook series - and there's no question the illustrations were important, too. Could you imagine if City Of Thieves had greyscale art as well as a porthole cover ?

Arguably Deathtrap Dungeon itself is the iconic entry that is the poster boy for the franchise.
Citadel of Chaos is incredibly underrated I feel - it's such a good book with a great ending, with only the cover art letting it down...
Warlock is a good book in itself though. I'd liken it a bit to the very early discworld books (colour of magic / light fantastic) which were very different in tone to the rest of the series, both the later ones and a lot of early ones.
But WoFTM is still great in and of itself.
