This is a thread to discuss the weirdest things you need (or atleast will be very useful) to complete a gamebook. Which was the oddest? Which was the most silly? Which was your favourite?
Note: Potions, Keys, Weapons, Magical Jewels and anything else that would be obviously useful like a rope do not count. They have to be things that you probably wouldn't take if you were doing the adventure for real and have no real purpose until you randomly need it.

Siege of Sardath You need a love potion to get a dark elf to treat you favorably. However use one that's a bit too strong and he will be so enchanted he won't let you leave Not strictly necessary but the toolfish in Demons of the Deep is pretty useful.

A couple from PDE books:
Portal of Evil requires you to be wandering around with a couple of caged songbirds. Even as pets go, they would seem unusually unhelpful to take on an adventure. (I can't remember whether it's possible to acquire them without knowing their purpose though.)
Spectral Stalkers has you picking up a variety of weird crap, including various items which are just vaguely roundish such as wheel hubs and inn signs. One in particular – a toy clown in a glass ball – can make all the difference if you get captured when nearing Globus.
______________ SotS has you picking up a fragment of antler for no very obvious reason, which is crucial if you're on the path that that appears.

No mention yet of the bell in Temple of Terror? Good example. The onyx egg for the Eye Stinger too. Why are Lizard Kings afraid of monkeys? Did we ever get told?

How about the ointment needed to get past the Ganjees? For such a great encounter that one left me scratching my head a bit. Maybe they have chapped lips?
