You can all rest assured my solutions are absolutely perfect so the effort expended here is strictly superfluous. The fact I have no idea about the mathematics is not even a remote consideration. Skill = 1 D6 + 6 Stam = 2 D6 + 12 Self confidence = 1 D20 + 50

So, would I be out of line to use a Potion of Stamina during a combat? I think it's OK. There's nothing in the book that says you can't. If you'd never played FF before and read Stormslayer, you'd assume you could use potions in combat, so I'd be inclined to interpret optimistically. I agree. Get drinking Champskees.

Star Strider was my first Gamebook. The cover caught my eye so I gave it a try. It blew my mind; I still remember how I felt reading the start of it. As a kid, I gradually acquired and read almost all of the books from 1 to 50. I stopped there as I felt that no 50 seemed to wrap up the series nicely, plus I spotted some errors in the later ones when browsing in the book stores. Stopping at 50 was a big mistake, as we all know what happened to the prices of those 50+ books later on. (I have them all now though.)

When Jackson finishes his new book I would love to think that he could pick an artist that reflected the ambiance of his work rather than being tied to an artist regardless of whether the drawn and written styles complimented each other. I can't see that being the case, but it would be nice if it was.

Daredevil 123, I'm impressed by your resolve. I put similar examples of my own Gamebook journeys on different threads, but your determination on this one is pretty admirable. I think you're eventually going to run out of bad guys.

Nah, definitely not cheating... Personally I also think if you die far into a gamebook series, it's acceptable to replay the book with all the stats and stuff from the previous books without replaying them. Pretty much essential for series like Lone Wolf and Way of the Tiger...] Maybe I missed something to the contrary in the rules (or maybe I chose to forget a contrary ruling) but I always thought that your take on things was in line with the author's intentions. Certainly that's how I played Lone Wolf.

Hello, New member here. By way of introduction, I think my top 10 FF (in no particular order) are: - Spectral Stalkers - LOT Shadow Warriors - Demons of the Deep - Black Vein Prophecy - Portal of Evil - Dead of Night - Vault of the Vampire - Crimson Tide - Howl of the Werewolf - Magehunter Nice to see that Spectral Stalkers was the first one you thought to write down. I love the oddity of that book. It's not everyone's favourite but it's packed with great imagination. It's definitely a stand out book in the series for me.

Update on the Scholastic relaunch (according to someone on the Facebook group following the two events in Edinburgh on Sunday with Ian and Steve & with Ian, Steve and Charlie) for anyone who hasn't heard it: "BREAKING NEWS...(at least it was for me). Steve Jackson is currently writing a new FF book. There are also 4 books to be released by Scholastic in 2019 being Caverns of the Snow Witch, Sorcery! 2 and two more yet to be announced!" Link to post I just panicked when I saw this and had to check that it was UK Steve (which is was) haha. Brilliant news, I'm genuinely so excited. Thanks for spreading the word on here as I check this site more than any other ff forums.

[/i] (1999) 1 - Dumpster fire![/quote] So brief and damming a review that I felt compelled to investigate. Found this discussion about it which made me laugh. The only upside to movies that look this bad, is that they sometimes can be unintentionally funny. Did you actually make it through to the end of this film?

This is actually a very important question. I'm not an expert on this, but don't use fonts that have restrictions on them especially if you intend to get it printed through a publishing company. If you want to know what fonts are used in certain books, this information is usually printed in the books themselves, on the page with the small writing near the start. Make sure you settle on the right font before layout begins. And whatever you do, don't use Comic Sans anywhere in your work; if you do, every graphic designer in the world will be shaking their heads too vigorously to focus on the text.

Interesting. You took quite a different route to me on Ed's book. I recall that the ending was pretty tricky but I won't give away any spoilers.

4th shottie - stats 7/20/9 - ah , oh dear. I got hurt badly fighting the Goblin statue then got into pointless fight with Grimslade - death !! 5th 11/14/11 - Previous goes showed me where to find the Masters, so I struggled through to the end with 2 stamina left!! OK, so Caverns of the Snow Witch next. I remember JUST completing this one a few years ago with max stats, so unless I roll them, I reckon I'll need all 6 goes!! I was convinced you'd do SS in four, with one death on the Grimslade quest. Your unfortunate stats on attempt 2 narrowly squished my prediction. Snow Witch is harder to predict but good luck. I like to see how other people get on playing fair, so I'm finding this interesting.

Would the DK zombie count as one type? A mini-boss? He was a major roadblock if I remember correctly. I would count it as one type. I was pleased by the fact that it was a bit different, but I also recall thinking that it was impossible to defeat without cheating. Although I think I'd already hit that realisation ages before.

If ranking these purely on how much pleasure i got from them and nothing else, BotZ hits the bottom of my list by a long way. Nothing comes close... I'm currently struggling to stick with Gates of Death, but I'll see how it goes. Racing towards the top would be Howl of the Werewolf or Necromancer. Okay here's my dark secret. I hope that I don't get too much stick for this but Eye of the Dragon would fair decently on my list despite being ludicrous. It made me laugh when it didn't mean too. The plot was a scribble and many encounters were absurd. But I did actually enjoy playing it and i got through it via the rules after a few attempts despite two overpowered enemies. I'd probably liken it to watching an 80's B movie that i knew i shouldn't like, but couldn't help but enjoy. Artwork really helped it. Now that I've confessed, i feel like i should build a wicker man and put myself in it.

Could have been a good book But it wasn't..... Turn that ship around, speed through another black hole, then crash land on Titan. Crew all dead? Turn them into provisions and grab a sword. COT and DD will be more fun.

I cannot remember the last time I said I am wearing my luggage to the airport. I thought this conversation could not possibly get any more dull, but here we are. I cannot remember mention of luggage in Gates of Death, nor are backpack and luggage synonyms, but if believing they are helps you enjoy the book more, that's fine. Besides, backpacks are usually just as strapped to the body as shoes are. I am beginning to find this debate quite amusing. I was put off by the writing style at the start of this book, hence I abandoned it in favour of a classic green spine revisit, but you've inspired me to give it another go just to see who I agree with. Might crack into it next week.

Well I've almost run out of Fighting Fantasy Quest Pack adventure sheets so need to make my own anyway. Meanwhile I've finished Gates of Death. Without spoiling, is it just me or is it impossible to complete without cheating at the end - claiming to have an object that you can't actually have at that point? I seriously hope that this isn't the case. I haven't heard anyone else mention it yet so hopefully you've missed something. Really like your potion drawings on the adventure sheet by the way.

I imagine that almost everyone just uses a separate sheet of paper. If someone uses the actual adventure sheet then i would presume it was their first go at a gamebook. Even with a pencil and an eraser, I think I would end up rubbing a hole right through most books before completing them. Though I would love to see someone try to use the actual equipment box on a Livingstone adventure.

Your hand closes on... one of your socks.
It smells of cheese.
Damn. This was the death scene reference that I accidently glanced when I first picked up the book.

Great to hear you're enjoying it. Are you trying the plant-seeking first? Have you tried casting any spells yet? I haven't tried any spells yet. I have a barbarian heart, but I will be using them at some point. As for my choice of quest, when I heard about an old man giving free soft toys to children, I rushed to the scene to kill him, but all seemed above board-ish, so I agreed to his plant quest. I still might kill him later though.

I have just had a dispatch e-mail so I will be hard at work on a solution by the weekend. My autistic self will be trying to squeeze the maximum out of minimum attributes. I think because I ordered at a slight discount I have been made to wait which is somewhat annoying. Why should I be penalized? New releases don't come round often John. I know you love working out the optimal routes but I hope that smashing out the solution at double speed doesn't detract from your enjoyment of those initial play throughs.

Good stuff so far. I started playing MM today with my partner. Haven't got too far yet but it made us laugh. Great humour. You said that it's not too long due to the heavy options, a fact which I like, as it keeps it punchy. Anyway, thanks again. A lot of effort went into this I'm sure, as it's a big reference count increase compared to your other works.

Interesting thoughts Kieran. I'll hold my judgment til I've read it. I opened it up out of curiosity this afternoon and I glanced reference 421. Didn't give me a good feeling but I'll give it a go and hopefully that page was just a one off. Going to read Mudworm's latest entry first, when time allows. But I'll delve into this after, I suspect.

The 'wimp may win' clause should be scrubbed from some books, and weaker characters should have been presented as an opportunity for exploitation, to pave the successful route for tougher heroes. I think that would have been ok. From a game mechanics perspective, the original rule is the best, but to create a world that feels real, I don't mind certain quests requiring tougher heroes, (as long as its not ridiculous.) They did get rid of the claim after Temple of Terror, by which time Ian had only had 5 or 6 'impossible to beat without a double-figure Skill score' books. That's actually very interesting. Somehow I never noticed that. Thanks.

First time out, I rolled a 1 for my Skill, and got slaughtered by the Demon Merchant. Haha. That is bad luck but well done for playing by the rules. I'll be doing the same. I hope its well balanced. Better luck next time.

As for Ian Livingstone, while Crypt and Blood may be the only virtually impossible books he's written, everything from Deathtrap Dungeon onwards (and arguably also City of Thieves) made a lie of the claim that 'any player, no matter how weak on initial dice rolls, should be able to get through fairly easily'. The 'wimp may win' clause should be scrubbed from some books, and weaker characters should have been presented as an opportunity for exploitation, to pave the successful route for tougher heroes. I think that would have been ok. From a game mechanics perspective, the original rule is the best, but to create a world that feels real, I don't mind certain quests requiring tougher heroes, (as long as its not ridiculous.)
