I feel we're missing a proper puzzle thread on here – there was a great long one on TUFFF which sadly couldn't be salvaged. I know we have treasure hunting and soundalikes but they have their limits. I'll start with an oddball one and hopefully others will come up with their own ideas:
You visit your friend Sid who is utterly obsessed with Fighting Fantasy. Before you go round to his house he tells you that the key is 'under mat' but it's not – and he won't open the door until you yell 'apfis nev' through the letterbox. Oh entering the house you are startled twice. Firstly because a wall is sculpted in such a way that a skeleton appears to be emerging from it. Secondly because Sid's cat is clad in close-fitting mini jersey which makes it look like it is covered in many extra eyes. Poor kitty. Sid also insisted that you bring a can of Heinz baked beans, and refuses to let you into the kitchen until you tell him that the number on it is '57'. Once inside, you are relieved when he offers you tea (rather than, say, a gloopy red wine, or cheese with white wine) and that it seems to be ordinary tea with ordinary milk (albeit served in antique goblets). But then Sid goes over to a hole in the wall just above the unit top and taps on the wall. You hear a scuffling sound from within the wall cavity. What happens next?

How did you get on with this in the end, Sylas?
I'm still not totally sure what counts – you mention eg black spiked mace above, so is a described item good enough, or only a named one? You need a silver arrow in CoT of course. In TCT you can pick up a monk's knife or staff. In KotLL a mace is handy if you encounter the Skull Beast, but I can't remember if it gets much of a description.

No. I'm not quite devious enough to describe a shuriken like that. It does have a name as well as a description but I thought it would be too obvious if I gave that as it's not an obscure item. It's not a weapon, though there is a point at which you might throw it when confronted by a particular enemy.

I suspect she'll notice contact on this forum one way or another soon. Alternatively I think this is her Twitter account: twitter.com/tmbadowskiHaven't had a lot of time for playthroughs recently. This does look tempting - if I get a chance I'll let you know.

Without doing any comparisons, my feeling is that 25 is quite reasonable whereas 50 is harsh. As Phil indicated it partly depends on whether falling into them is pure luck or partly due to poor judgment. How many times do you want the average reader to get squished before they complete the adventure?

Where is the place where the sun and the moon become One? In a black hole? I recall there's on in Starship Traveller. (I've no idea where those flowers are from either.)

If real life were like gamebooks... ...one could hardly spend a night in the woods without being offered a reiki massage from a night elf. (I know it's just cosplay, but it was just so random I couldn't resist sharing it.)

Yes, I've heard it described as a 'sci-fi thriller'. The mind boggles. Satire is dead. Maybe Straight Block has a troublesome relationship with Zig-Zag Block, but they realise that they have to work together to save the world by blowing lots of alien stuff up. Or maybe it's a world-saving quest for the elusive straight block, and the climax of the film is this. Maybe they are watching too much MTV , all reality shows , seems like garbage to me...i just do not have patience to watch them anymore( yes i watched them at times ,... past tense). Note: at least those monkeys shown in the video do not leave in a cage 24/7 locked up to "explode" on front of a camera. Edit: Sorry if i am being rude on aswering this but i do not have patience for this kind of shows anymore. ( and watch very little Tv generally nowadays) No not rude. I hesitate to admit that I still watch the UK version of Big Brother - mostly out of habit . It is the only one I watch - and I think I'm the only one who watches it. Nothing on MTV though - I draw the line at the likes of Geordie Shore. Monkeys aside, I'd still maintain that a romance between Straight Block and Zig-Zag would be worse, but maybe there's not much in it.

Very interesting post with a very amusing Freudian slip by Ian Livingstone on Facebook: m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=10156862931525316&id=632880315"I asked on Twitter yesterday if, and it is a big if, I were to write a sequel to one of my early Fighting Fantasy Boobs, which one should it be? I got a great and encouraging response and now I wonder if my Facebook friends agree? Please let me know which one you'd vote for and I'll post the comparative votes." I imagine that everyone has already spotted that one of these books has the initials DD. Still, there it is. This gives me an idea for some new FF parodies...better not to think about that too much. The Warlock of Tassel-Topped Mountains, that's sort of thing? I'm inclined to agree with this, for the reasons others have given.

yes. i've since also found the Hot Knives of the Death Head in RtFTM, the Shadow Warriors' weapons, the Wand of the Hawk in LoZ. more is needed. i'm not too familiar with the FF non-gamebooks such as the novels, AFF, and Warlock Magazine so there maybe more in those too. I don't know much about the non-gamebooks either. I've got Dungeoneer knocking around, but it's not really item-heavy. There is a magic sword you can pick up but nothing from your categories that I can remember. Have you tried searching for the terms in Titannica? For example, a search for 'wand' throws up a mention of an iron wand (which proves to be a named sceptre) in the entry on Akharis from CotM and a reference to a Radiation Neutralization Wand in AwF. A search of the solutions section within this forum brings up an Ebon wand from HotW.

I have just read an interesting article by BBC news entitled "the retro cult around Fighting Fantasy" dated 25th August 2014 (it wouldn't let me post link). This one?I doubt that S & I would have much difficulty in getting this sort of thing published these days - at least in the UK. The influence of religion, especially Christianity, has declined. Harry Potter was published after all, (like many magic-themed books before it) as were Philip Pullman's books (which are more directly hostile to religion). People protest a bit of course but they're on the fringe. The internet has moved the goalposts for what counts as shocking. In any case the FF books never encouraged you to serve demonic evil, which made the hysteria particularly silly. Now a gamebook encouraging you to serve the Slender Man would get a backlash, but that's another matter. I think it was only first editions that allowed people to levitate.

How many of the books need amending in regard to skill bonuses not being what they should be namely attack strength bonuses? The last book that was correct was City Of Thieves and it took until Green 'matured' for it finally to be clear and logical. Even City only got it right about half the time. The blacksmith sells armour providing a Skill bonus that ought to be for Attack Strength. The Skill bonus from the Elven Boots on Key Street is more contentious, but as items found on the other two streets leading from the city gate have Attack Strength bonuses, having the boots do likewise would provide a little more balance. Also, losing your fancy sword on Key Street should mean an Attack Strength penalty rather than Skill loss. I'm never quite sure with armour. It's associated with combat, like a sword, but if it's crafted to give full protection with less weight, or magically adjusting to ease your movements, then maybe it makes it easier to run, jump and climb too. It sort of raises the question as to why/when busting past your initial Skill is such a big deal. Is your initial Skill just your intrinsic athleticism without equipment, or does it include stuff? Presumably according to City your Skill increased during the Introduction because of the quality sword, without challenging your initial Skill.

Thanks for that offm . I agree, someone's really put some work into it - very handy. Initially, I was somewhat puzzled as to how vagsancho's post could be relevant to this thread, but I imagine that what he's saying is that he's going to use the adventure sheet to help him keep track of his packing. (Cloudcuckooland gets terribly hot this time of year.) Remember to pack an extra set of provisions for a budget airline. It's certainly true that a trip to London could be an adventure. Here's a sample of how a trip might go… 26. You need to travel a mile North to Leicester Square. Will you… Walk? (Turn to 13) Sit your lazy arse on the tube? (Turn to 46) 46. Travelling a mile North on the tube requires you to purchase an enchanted shellfish. This costs 50,000 gold pieces for some reason. Will you… Pay it if you can? (Turn to 50) If you can't, you must attempt to vault the barriers. Test your SKILL. If you succeed, turn to 12; if you fail turn to 84. 12. No one cares that you do this, not least as most people are busy murdering someone who stood in the wrong place on a moving staircase. You step onto the next tube train and stand alongside dozens of glum fellow adventurers, but you are still uncertain of your bearings when you get off at the next stop. Will you… Keep quiet? (Turn to 5) Ask for directions? (Turn to 63) 63. Speaking to strangers on a tube train is the worst possible insult you can make in London. The whole carriage turns to stare at you with a mixture of alarm and fury. Two men pin you against a partition and pummel you until an eight year old schoolgirl breaks your face in half with a flying headbutt. Your adventure deservedly ends here.

Presumably people outside the UK won't have been able to access this program, (nor will people within the UK before long). It would be nice to post a link to a downloadable version, but that might have copyright implications for whoever posted it and possibly the forum itself. (If anyone has any thoughts on the copyright issue feel free to send me a PM.) What did people who have listened to it so far think of the show? _________ Thanks for the walkthrough, Zhu. I wasn't aware of FIST (possibly a slightly unfortunate name) until now. Quite cool, though very much of its time. It mentioned needing to roll a six a couple of times - were you supposed to play it with dice handy? The dice is part of the conversion, and they weren't used in the original phone game. IIRC combat used a system where you pressed a number on the keypad that corresponded to aiming for different body parts - so 0 was head, 1 was right arm, etc. or something like that - it was very 'action/arcade'. When you pressed the key you'd get sound effects and the narrator telling you if you'd hit, missed or been hit back. It was probably based on a scissors-paper-stone type mechanic or perhaps Steve Jacksons "Swordmaster" that he talks about here: imgur.com/a/AcaNPThanks. Swordmaster is/was one of many gaps in my gamebook knowledge. Interesting.
