Port is a mess as regards bonuses and Initial scores from the outset. Still, unless strict adherence to the rules makes a book completely unwinnable, a bonus which cannot be claimed just has to go to waste.

3. In the unlikely event that everybody fails as a consequence of taking risks in order to qualify for points under rule 2, planets visited will similarly be used (scoring 1 point per planet, to a maximum of 5) to determine the number of bonus points scored by the player(s) who got furthest through the book.
Or could fail because of not memorizing the correct route - damned if I can remember the tricky bit leading to one of the right numbers. That bit is another potential failing point, though it's not likely to doom absolutely everyone: if the player who's been open about using solutions up until now were to attempt Starship Traveller this week, he would probably refer to the solution for that part, despite needing to ignore it elsewhere in order to get any points.

How are we interpreting the skill bonuses for weapons? Strictly by the rules that they're useless if you haven't lost any skill points? The rules state 'Your SKILL score cannot exceed its Initial value unless you are specifically instructed to the contrary' (my emphasis). Therefore, if the text says that a weapon permits you to exceed your Initial SKILL, you may do so, and if it doesn't, you can't. While a mention of Attack Strength would have been a better option, there's no contradiction here.

24-hour warning for nathanh, schlendrian and thealmightymudworm. In The Shamutanti Hills I got overconfident (what with having Skill 9, and cumulative bonuses of +3 to Attack Strength), somehow got lost in the caves, and wound up flattened by a boulder. I killed two Bandits, a Giant Bat, an Ogre, and a Wood Golem, and spared Flanker's life, so vastariner is fortunate that I'm no longer in the game, as that leaves him in the running for the 'most fights won' bonus. I didn't do any better in The Floating City, as I didn't have any gift items that a powerful Sorcerer wanted, so he transformed me into a seal. Week 14
This century - Starship TravellerOwing to this book’s being winnable without any rolling of dice, there are some special rules to keep it from becoming an automatic 10+ points for everyone. 1. When the stats bonus is calculated, only stats that were used during play get counted. If a member of the crew gets into a fight, you may include their Skill and Stamina. If one of them never fights, but does make a Skill roll, just give their Skill. The ship's stats likewise count for nothing unless you get into ship-to-ship combat. 2. You must keep track of all the planets visited in the course of the book, and list them when posting your results. If you make it to section 340, you get 2 victory points (to a maximum of 10) for each planet on which your character sets foot where you did not acquire part of the information required for finding the correct black hole. You will have to deviate from the ultra-safe path listed here in order to score anything. 3. In the unlikely event that everybody fails as a consequence of taking risks in order to qualify for points under rule 2, planets visited will similarly be used (scoring 1 point per planet, to a maximum of 5) to determine the number of bonus points scored by the player(s) who got furthest through the book. Note that at section 223, the section numbers given are the wrong way round: a successful roll means that you should turn to 46, while a failed roll should lead to 129. This is also true of 326: rolling below or equal to your Skill should lead to 266, while exceeding it would take you to 12. Last century - Master of Chaos

It was wonderful, until The Count's altercation with him 5 minutes later led Jon to sever all contact with us for God knows how long, if not ever. As you say, he is the alien who visited us before finding out we weren't material for him. I am nothing to do with him* deciding to participate in the forum or not, and if someone not liking him* ripping off other peoples books for his* latest gamebooks is a problem for him*, he* should not ever be on the internet lest he* see anything that isn't fawning sycophancy... *I am assuming the identification of he / him as does everyone else. If this is incorrect, this is a forum issue... For continuing to disregard the rules on treating other users with respect, you have been banned from the forum for a fortnight.

I haven't insulted JG as far as I know (you'll have to ask him), that was The Count. He said some rather unfortunate things, which is why I don't really read him much. In fact, I think I'll stop reading this thread in case some grown men feel threatened. We know you didn't make the insulting posts. Nevertheless, you are the person who's acting as if asking people not to make insulting posts is a gross infringement of their human rights. The Count remains free to say whatever he wants about anybody on other parts of the internet and in the physical world. Even here, he is still able to indicate his dislike of any given book so long as he does so without being rude about the author(s). If that offends you... Well, I imagine you must find it even more objectionable that other parts of the world are even more restrictive, and respectfully suggest that you direct your efforts towards trying to make a change in the places that are genuinely oppressive.

The only alternative would be to get rid of all freedom of speech. Don't exaggerate. It's perfectly possible to dissent and disagree without resorting to insults and abuse. The forum's rules restrict the 'right' to be rude about or to other people. If you're participating in any discussions here, you must accept slight limits to your freedom of speech. Anyone who is unwilling to accept those mild restrictions should go elsewhere: there are plenty of online cesspools where anything goes, so you shouldn't have much trouble finding somewhere to spew the bile that is not permitted here.

You would report it as 11. The possibility of getting a lower stats bonus is more than balanced by the advantages that come from carrying across equipment and information from the first book.

In Prophecy I learned that you should never Biantai a Polybleb.
For Shrine I got Sk 7 St 19 L 7. After a promising start, I fell down a hole into a latrine, lost all my Provisions and contracted a wasting disease (though neither of those consequences would have occurred if I'd Escaped from the Slime Eater that attacked me rather than killing it), and subsequently got killed by Tadpoles.
Fights won Rhino-man 3 Dark Goblins Slime Eater 3 Killer Tadpoles

I can assure you that this is not the case. It takes me much less time to write a gamebook like 'TWAS, or RONIN 47, than it does to adapt a story like DRACULA. You haven't assured me. No matter how long it takes you to "adapt" a story like Dracula or Alice, someone else has already done the hard graft of the world building, background, plot, character creation and storyline. If you find adapting someone else's work hard, that is because you should - and lack the creativity to create something unique. Having read your FF efforts which show a great creative mind, I can only conclude that you couldn't be arsed trying to build your own gamebook universe so pillaged the tales of your betters. Citing your crapmaus effort doesn't help your case as that was another example of you taking a story and character created by someone else and ramming it into another format for your own personal gain. Please reread the first few Forum Rules. You can disagree with someone, you can dislike things they've written, but if you're posting here, you may not express that disagreement or dislike in a manner that is disrespectful of the person.

The clocks officially go forward at 2am on Sunday, so the deadline for week 12 is unaffected. Thus, nathanh, peasantscribbler, schlendrian & thealmightymudworm still have until midnight GMT to get their results in.
Week 13 This century - Kharé - Cityport of Traps came up on the randomizer, but to allow for carrying characters forward in Sorcery! that gets changed to The Shamutanti Hills Last century - The Floating City (Warlock magazine 8)

24-hour warning to peasantscribbler, schlendrian and thealmightymudworm.
I managed to roll worse stats for Sword than terrysalt did, and got killed by the Samurai Horseman. A Skill of 10 for Island meant that I wound up as Greater Ghoul-fodder.
Week 12 This century - Shrine of the Salamander (Fantazine 2) Last century - Black Vein Prophecy
In Prophecy you may voluntarily fail that Test your Luck, but if you do so, you may only add 5 to the number rolled when generating your Luck score, and must state that you did so when posting your results.

While I am no longer scoring, I am still playing the adventures, and will post my results. A mediocre Skill got me killed by a Wild Boar early in Phantoms.
Not that I did a whole lot better at Veil...
Sk 9 St 16 L 7
Fights won Bats
I was killed by a Metal Warrior, but by then I'd already failed a crucial Luck roll and missed out on an essential item.

What's the consensus on retroactively applying any new rules?
As the person who'll have to do the extra work if it does happen, I don't mind, but that possibility is why I'm trying to get this sorted out now rather than leaving it until a massive backlog can accumulate.

I tried both, and in both I got a rubbish Skill and good stats where it didn't matter because with that Skill I had no chance anyway. Vault
Skill 7 Stamina 22 Luck 12 Faith 6
Kills 2 Zombies
No point in listing equipment, because I also fell to the Baobhan Sith
In Gates I was killed by Demon Brother Tobyn.

In the event that no one wins either book, is there a 'closest to victory' bonus for each book or just for one, and there is a mechanism to decide which? Not that I have any stakes in the matter So far there's only been the one 'closest to victory' bonus in weeks where nobody won. Give me a bit of time to analyse the data and see if changing that would be worthwhile and practical. ETA: Nobody won in weeks 1 and 2. In week 1 kieran was the only player of Sky Lord to survive more than two fights, but still got less than half way through the book. The bonus went to schlendrian, who made it to the final door in Escape from the Sorcerer but couldn't open it. In week 2 greenspine was the only player of Fortress Throngard to kill the Dragon. The bonus went to kieran, who made it to the final fight in Freeway Fighter. If we're going to give 'closest to victory' bonuses for both books in win-free weeks, the rule should be backdated to the start, with belated bonuses for kieran and greenspine. And then we start arguing about bringing in a 'closest to victory' bonus for the adventure that nobody won in weeks where only one of the adventures had a winner. And about 'per adventure' bonuses for highest kill count. Who wants to open those Pandora's boxes? You said yourself that changing the rules part way through was akin to opening Pandora's Box so I'm going to vote against it because I sense it will probably do more harm than good. I'm against the potential rule change, mostly because I think that, thus far, it's been clearly and fairly determined which attempt was closest to victory. However, I'm not strongly against the idea, and I would support it if it's what the majority want to do. I'm in favour for two reasons: First, until now it has been easy to decide, but there might come books where it's harder to conclude who got further in two totally different books. Second, while I'm absolutely fine with playing the challenge as is, I'm of the opinion that it would be positive to have more options to get points for actual progress rather than rolling up stats beforehand.
I don't have a problem whatever is decided, but I think it would be a good change. I would probably even go as far as separate the books entirely, so one person winning book A wouldn't mean there wasn't a closest-to-victory prize available for book B. It's a bit of a meh week if you only have one of the two books and it's a really hard one and the other one is easy, and you're just hoping to roll 7 14 7 because that's the most profitable return. But I don't mind whatever. Those are the main arguments on the issue. Let's put it to a vote.

The book states: "For every day that you add to your log, you will be able to recover 1 point of stamina." The bit following, about being wary of spending too much time resting and adding too many days to your log, seems to be, to me, analogous to the warning about relying on luck too much and this becoming riskier (when you can't choose whether or not to use luck most of the time). In other words, it is just there to reinforce the concept of urgency, to add another factor to your decision-making and make you more emotionally involved in the story. You add to your log as instructed, and gain stamina as a by-product of the passage of time (which is a realistic by-product - you rest while sailing the open seas between encounters). Prior to this, in the section about your log, it says "you should keep a record of your log as instructed in various passages in the book." This also suggests that you can't choose to add extra rest days at will. I've just checked the books that do not permit the use of Luck in battle, and all but Freeway Fighter lack the usual warning about relying on Luck. It doesn't seem unreasonable to infer that, since that warning almost exclusively appears in books where voluntary expenditure of Luck is possible, the presence of a similar warning relating to spending time resting in Seas should be taken as meaning that the reader can add additional days to the log in order to recover Stamina. Especially as the 'don't rely too heavily on Luck' warning has been removed from the rules of Seas.
