Would the DK zombie count as one type? A mini-boss? He was a major roadblock if I remember correctly.

There's nothing wrong with liking a bit of cheese, lordomnibok! I am too guilty of loving stuff that would make the majority shake their heads in disbelief.
I found Eye of the Dragon to be, overall, a pain, but perhaps it has more to do with my strong reactions toward the decline of Livingstone as an FF author: he was responsible for so much greatness after all, genuine classics like City of Thieves or Deathtrap Dungeon, and lots of other fun stories, to... that.
Taken on it's own, EotD might have make me laugh just like you and I would have enjoyed it a lot more, just like I laugh every step of the way while going through Sky Lord!
Who knows, one day maybe I'll replay it and, viewing it as a farce, will laugh too. The premise is certainly one of the most ridiculous one ever. And hey, it gave great blog post to just about every FF blogger out there!

You are so right, sylas, when you say that Eye of the Dragon will loose it's only good thing when they inevitably replace the old illustrations... sigh. One more reason not to upgrade (more like downgrade)!

I haven't read The Gates of Death yet, I just bought it from some seller on the marketplace; amazon.ca for some reason don't sell the new books.
So otherwise, let's try this since it's a rather small list (can't help but imagining the brain melt if you try to do the whole series this way!):
(this is my best to worst from gut and bad memory; I've only played each book once and I suppose further playthrough might shift the books around... /disclaimer)
Howl of the Werewolf Night of the Necromancer Stormslayer Bloodbones The Port of Peril Blood of the Zombies Eye of the Dragon
We'll see where GoD slides in eventually...

Yes the lack of a proper Manticore on the Shamutanti Hills cover is a shame. As for the original illos by John Blanche they'll go the way of the dodo, just like Nicholson's illos or Malcom Barter's; more shame. A good illustration transcend time, kids will see that. And look at that conga-line above. A bad illo will also transcend time, see? People today will agree it is a bad one, just like we did all those years ago. All the same, brings back memories.

Happy for Higson. However, I feel they might be going in the wrong direction with those new covers. First, already changing? They heard the grumbles of the old fans? The new books didn't sell well? Stick to your guns, for once, don't admit defeat at the first sign of hurdles. It feels like the movie industry: well this movie didn't work and didn't start the franchise I was hoping for, so let's reboot for the third time!!
Next, those new covers, for batch #1, they made the old fans grumble mainly because Scholastic is voluntarily burying the old magnificent covers, which is a tragedy in itself, but also depriving a new generation that could discover just how fantastic the original drawing of Zambar Bone was. Now, for that new batch (#2) they are keeping the new artist (who is fine in his own right) (but) which means depriving us of awesome original arts like the cover of Deathtrap Dungeon, plus they are making the same mistake that Wizard did when they decided it was a good idea to diminish prior art to the size of thumbnails. So yes, a clean, unified look, but at the cost of full cover art, which in my opinion is way more eye-catching and overall, interesting.
Yes, I feel they are going the wrong way. They don't need to go back to the way thing used to be, like with the green zigzag and such (I'd love it, but that's not my point). But they do need to stop killing good art pieces, both old (especially such proven classics!) and new.

Haven't yet. Just getting out of the flu, but here at work they've implemented a new system, and as usual, it's not bug-free. It's going to be a rockin' week. I am hoping next week I might be able to start on my lunch hour, something like that.

I haven't started on this yet. Right now there's some missing persons at work and I'm starting a flu, or something. When things quiet down, like in a week or two, I would love to give it a go.

I can't think of a specific example cause it's been a while since I've played a FF book (but of course if something comes to mind...), but I do think Luke Sharp's entry should have quite a few each. So many ways to die.

Now I might have to read/play it after all. Stockings and suspenders does sound tempting. You would have totally sold it to me if you've said suspenders and a bra, though. I mean, there should be trees in your mire? Murderous ones? There was in Scorpion Swamp after all. Tempting for the lumberjack in me. And hey, what a buffet, free thights and all the punches you can eat. Er... Something like that.

Eh, I was going to make an easy joke or two about how it's going to take me longer to read this than it took you for writing it, but then I read that there are no-one wearing tights in this... "parody", so now I know I'm never going to read it!!!
Such a shame, every gamebooks should include tights somewhere, somehow. This belong under Livingstone's patio, now that Sargent's been exhumed.

Just to tell you all that well-known gamebook author Jonathan Green has a new Kickstarter going on:
The project is slightly struggling at the moment, failing to garner awareness, so if you like all-things gamebooky, and like what Mr. Green has produced before, go ahead and encourage him with this, I doubt you will regret it. He's always reliable, hard-working, and very imaginative.
So go ahead and at the very least, pay his page a visit and read about the proposal, why not? And have fun.

Yes, Almighty, you and me both, I am also a black belt, but usually don't like to advertise! Not that on the web it matters one way or the other. And just like you I am also not too fond of wearing high heels, suspenders and a bra, just like my dear mama.

I can be quite the geek (yes to the IQ also), and I'm also pretty good at fighting. Not that I fight often; I wise man will avoid fights as much as possible. Not that I'm that wise either. But if it couldn't be avoided, I'm not too worried. Unless of course, guns are involved or telekinesis or some other cheat like up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, A, B.

I am a bit with lordomnibok on that matter. I'd be interested, I'd probably watch it a bit, but untrustworthy in these matter, since my entertainment time is already stretch thin by so many stuff. Basically I don't want to feel guilty by pushing you to do this, and then not showing up, or half-assing my presence. If you feel strongly for this go for it, but that would be a labor of love, that goes without saying.
Or maybe something like: if you build it, they will come? So what if you end up having only Kevin Coster and James Earl Jones. You could do worse.

It's an awesome cover, but nothing less could be expected by a pro like McCaig. But yeesh, I'll have to skip a few meal to own it. That price would be nearly double with our weak CAD. I'll have to ponder this.

Shaken not stirred? Oh wait, I mean very much dead but not stirred.
Well I might have to push myself on writting that review, I started (barely) but work caught up and I'm at rush peak at the moment (work is where I write my reviews, don't tell them).
Also, if memory serves right, after Temple of Flame, the most difficult one should be Eye of the Dragon. It was for me, anyway. Great illustrations, though, if you are into Russ Nicholson!

Chin up lordomnibok, I know it's not much consolation, but you have more patience than me. I usually start "adjusting" the rules after my second fail attempt. Sixteen times without cheating? You could have ask me to picture infinity, for all I know.

Well, they are interesting. I agree mostly that they can't beat the original covers, I so wish they were somehow included in the books just so the youngsters could see what they used to be, but the use of bold colours is kinda cool and certainly striking. Now if they could only release new versions of the rare FF books, that would be something.
