Some good ideas but ultimately a pretty disappointing meh book.

Given that it was authored by the range editor, did anybody edit it? Lack of checking by someone else could explain some of the book's flaws (overly scarce opportunities to eat Provisions, apparent inability to tell that a tiger is not a panther).

This has to be one of the most "inefficient" gamebooks in the series. There are frequent decisions that end up at exactly the same state with no mechanical differences. The encounter with THE CAARTH! is probably the most egregious, with three identical confront options and one hide option, repeated for whether Katya is present, and 7 of the 8 possibilities is essentially identical.
I can somewhat see the reasoning, since it seems, after a few plays, that there are lots of options, but once you explore a bit more you will be disappointed. Also I can imagine people cheating by trying all THE CAARTH! options and getting disgruntled. So probably a good writing strategy if you think that someone is only going to play your book some times but not exhaustively, but not if you think people will play a lot or will read the book without playing or cheat and go back.
