I sort of remember the book , and i think it the way around it starts being boring as hell , and then it gets a lot better to read.

I know what you mean, everyday that I'm forcibly taken, tied up on a table and nearly killed by a bunch of fanatics I find myself bored to death. The shame I'm so blasé, nothing can stir me anymore.

This is the next book from my 99p buys. The book itself is in rather a poor state but it is still fine to read and what a read it is. Warlock especially seems to express language suitable for 8-12 year olds whereas this seems suitable for a teenager so it is more attractive for an adult sensibility. I have not tried a minimal stats attempt with dice.
The skill bonuses are a little bit ambiguous. Does the +2 skill bonus apply or not? The rules seem to suggest there are no limits for skill yet they apply as normal to luck. The wonderfully monikered Potion Of Berserk Rage must apply in a wide sense or else it is useless. Shades of The Port of Peril. Annoyingly sometimes specific initial stats increases are clear sometimes not.

I've always taken the rules' lack of the usual ban on exceeding Initial Skill as meaning that any bonus can be applied.

I only played this book from darvill Evans. I have read here oftenly that his later books are better, but I sincerely doubt it. Beneath nightmares castle is so so good!!

I only played this book from darvill Evans. I have read here oftenly that his later books are better, but I sincerely doubt it. Beneath nightmares castle is so so good!! I think all his books are pretty strong. I don't really like how Willpower is handled in Beneath Nightmare Castle and the illustrations are a mixed bag, but otherwise I can't fault it. Portal of Evil is a stronger concept in my opinion and has a lot of fun sequences though it leads you by the hand a bit too much. A couple of subquests add greatly to the story but actually make the book a lot harder which is a wee bit annoying. Spectral Stalkers is great, it's basically a collection of wacky mini adventures. There's one lengthy segment I don't much care for and the mini adventures can feel a bit pointless but it's definitely one of the most imaginative books in the series. So yeah you can't go too wrong with any of them - Peter Darvill Evans is a firm contender for best FF author in my opinion.

I would not be surprise if someone says: Beneath Nightmares Castle is the best fighting fantasy of all.

I like this book. I love the atmosphere and tone.
I love how you can complete this book with low stats as you can get powerful magical items that both increase your skill and reduce your opponents' skill. I also love the cliffhanger - Xakhaz can return!
The death paragraphs are works of art! It's more fun to die in this book than it is to win Space Assassin.

I revisited this book recently and was struck by the very powerful tone struck by Dave Carson's artwork. It is wonderfully textural. In response, I drew a couple of pictures (below): While I was writing this post, I wondered what Dave Carson was up to now (I knew he was an illustrator with a long career). I was pleased to find a link to a 2021 art book by Dave Carson, 'Called by Cthulhu', which has an introduction by Neil Gaiman and I thought people might be interested in seeing: www.amazon.co.uk/Called-Cthulhu-Eldritch-Dave-Carson/dp/B08XZFSJYFI'd like to go through the other Fighting Fantasy books and see if I could learn from any of the other illustrations. Would people be interested in me posting something like that?

Set up a thread and go for it, gareth. I'd agree. Anecdotal and unreliable as this might be, I once knew someone who was trying to make some money selling FF-like pictures he'd done. They weren't a patch on yours, Gareth.
