Dervish Stone Dice allocated for stats. 3rd attempt. Used champskees’ guide. Victory! (1st time around, average stats and death by a Skill roll failure; 2nd time, amazing stats and death by a ‘roll D6, 6=death’; both of those attempts, stats by dice as they fell.) Skill 12, stamina 15, luck 12 Items/notes: 17 gold, Potion of Fortune [x], 2 meals, Control Human Potion, glass capsules [x], glass eye, magic sword [x], throwing knife [x], boots of leaping, sword, bag of sand Fights won: Night Ghoul, Orc (2 hits), Giant Hawk, Dervish, 2x Crab Spiders.

A little under 24 hours to get in results for week 31.
Week 32 The Forest of Doom (4 dice) Blood of the Zombies (2 dice (and you can add 20 to the roll, for all the difference that’ll make))
Please state if you use a guide, if you allocate dice at character creation rather than taking them as they fall, or if you make more than one attempt at a book. Only combats which you win should be included in the list of enemies defeated.
I can’t see many people going for Blood of the Zombies, so to make things a bit more interesting, this week the bonus for winning fights will be handled differently. All players will score a bonus point for every 5 fights won (rounded down), and large groups of opponents in Blood count as one fight for every 10 enemies in the mob (rounded up).
Opponents only count once in The Forest of Doom: if you pass through section 98, any fights that you repeat on subsequent passes through the forest should not be included in your total of battles won.
In Blood of the Zombies, list groups fought - something like: 2 Zombies 8 Zombies 3 Zombies 4 Zombies 15 Rats 2 Zombies 1 Zombie 12 Zombies (etc) Each fight will count as one 'kill'.
Also note any Zombies that die without you fighting them, but please clearly indicate that they don't count as combats won.
Closeness to victory (let's be honest, the odds of anyone getting the full victory bonus for this book are negligible) will be determined based on how long you stayed on the 'true path'. For example, player A takes a lot of damage fighting the Rats, and doesn't have enough Stamina left to get through the mob of a dozen Zombies. Player B avoids the Rats (and, consequently, the Zombie duo that follows them), and is healthy enough to kill the gang of 12 and several more Zombies afterwards. Player A is closer to victory despite dying earlier, because player B skipped an essential encounter. On the other hand, player B has a higher kill count.
Week 30 scoring 1st= evilwizard – 17 (stats bonus 2 + victory bonus 10 + most fights won bonus 5) 1st= terrysalt – 17 (stats bonus 2 + closest to victory bonus 5 + most fights won bonus 5 + acquisitiveness bonus 5) 3rd: kieran – 16 (stats bonus 1 + victory bonus 10 + acquisitiveness bonus 5) 4th: hallucination - 12 (stats bonus 2 + victory bonus 10) 5th: kalieum - 2 (stats bonus 2)
For the acquisitiveness bonus in TWoFM, section 400's mention of 'At least a thousand Gold Pieces' suggests that evilwizard accumulated 50GP in addition to the Warlock's treasure, the Eye of the Cyclops, the earrings and the crucifix. Since Kieran had 69GP plus the treasure, the Eye and the earrings, and the crucifix is only worth 4GP, he wins by 15GP.
Running totals 1st: evilwizard - 437 2nd: terrysalt - 419 3rd: hallucination - 394 4th: King Gillibran - 272 5th: kieran - 119 6th: peasantscribbler - 76 7th: kalieum - 50 8th: juniorhornet - 44 9th: nathanh – 33

What are the rules surrounding grenades in Blood? The Champskees guide seems to treat them as only being usable when directly instructed in the text but my copy contains no such rule. Was this added in the reprints that increased the starting stamina?

I haven't seen the reprints, so I can't say what was changed in them. There was a little discussion of grenades later on in the solution thread. The ruling suggested here seems reasonable to me.

For the closest to victory bonus with Eye of the Dragon, are the keys considered to be necessary for the true path? You technically don't need any of them since you can just choose the weapons in the correct order without receiving any of the clues but the solution is assuming you go for at least 4 of them (at which point you can easily deduce the final clue). So I figured I should get clarification before I start playing.

It would be a bit cheaty to just 'guess' the correct sequence, so yes, collecting keys is required.
In fact, I'll base the victory bonus for Eye on the number acquired of the keys that unlock clues to the weapon-pulling sequence. Should you succeed at the book, you get 1 point if you only got one of the keys, 3 for two of them, 6 for three, and the full 10 for four or more.

Crystal of Storms 1 attempt Stats rolled in order No guide Killed by my second combat. Stats etc Skill 7/7 Stamina 1/17 Luck 8/12
Gold: 4 Sword Cloudkin Staff Apple Pie (heals 3)
Wins: STORMKIN Writeup: To make up for not playing Forest of Doom last week despite having the book, I ordered a copy of Crystal of Storms online to have a book to do this week instead. It only arrived today, so I'm a little rushed to get this in for the deadline. I'd never even heard of this one, and checking the date in the copyright blurb suggests it was released in 2020, making it by far the most recent entry I've played. The front cover looks quite whimsical, and while it's a lovely illustration, it doesn't quite fit with what I'd expect from a Fighting Fantasy book. Then again, I should probably remember it is technically a childrens' series. There seems to be yet another series ordering - of which this is no. 17 - which just makes me sigh a little. That said, the rules look the same as ever, with the addition of codifying Testing your Stamina as a specific thing.
My rolls are on the whole pretty bad (though I've done better than the book's previous owner who presumably misread the rules and managed to start with only 5 luck), but perhaps modern sensibilities will have added things like 'fairness' to the FF formula. But that's enough procrastinating, there's only one way to find out.
The intro details that I'm a member of the watch on some magical sky islands. We'd all been called to some important meeting when, after being separated from the group by an errand an explosion flings me off of the island, with the adventure beginning as I fall. The blurb on the back of the book names said island as one that's crashed out of the sky and that my mission is to raise it out of the ocean it fell to, which ties the overall premise together. Perhaps the titular Crystal of Storms was the thing keeping the island airbone and it was damaged/destroyed in the explosion.
Strapping on my superior's techno-magical wings - that were the object of my errand - to arrest my fall I witness the island of Nimbus plummeting to the waters below, choosing one of three other islands to simultaenously be my home island and my current destination, which I guess is a way to make my character more part of the world, but deciding important things about my character mid-game has always felt weird to me.
Anyway, I decide my parents were moisture farmers and - oh hey, they're farming sentient clouds, like the one with a face on the cover art. It's so delightfully whimsical. Anyway, for the crime of being born on the wrong island, I lose 5 health, and after some more descriptive text find myself fighting a storm cloud. There's an NPC who helps me here, providing some frankly probably-necessary-to-my-survival bonuses for doing so.
Defeating the STORMKIN yields an 'if Altos is your home island' split, suggesting I'd be visiting all of the possible starting islands anyway and leaving me particularly miffed about taking 5 damage for starting here. But, because I started here, it turns out the NPC is my childhood friend Nemi, who gives me a couple of more localised quests (find her favourite cloud-herding sky-dog-thing, check the watch house for a sleeping watchman), and more importantly tags along for at least my time on Altos, providing the same benefits as she did in the fight. I'm pleasantly surprised at a companion who doesn't seem likely to die in a couple of sections and is actually a benefit to have around.
Wanting to keep my survival crutch happy, I head to the waterfall and start looking for Nemi's canidor, which I'm realising is what the main creature on the cover art is. It's been affected by the same burst of energy that turned a harmless cloud into a hostile one and seems to be struggling to stay in control and I don't have the necessary item to help it, so I'm forced to turn back to the goblin flier I saw previously. Nemi seems to vanish from the narrative at this point and I assume she remains with Flapps, but unless the book has separate sections for returning to previous islands I suspect I'm not going to be able to get the required item elsewhere and come back.
The goblin is too injured to fly me anywhere, but can charge the wings I - uh. If everyone else in the watch is dead then I am the ranking officer, I suppose. Anyway, it costs a gold to charge them, limiting how much I can go between the islands. I'm only allowed to choose the other two possible starting islands as my destination, leaving me wondering why I can't go to the two other presumably-still-airborne islands.
Pursuing the hope that I can help Nemi's sky dog I go to the trading island, where I seem to only have the choice of restoratives to buy with implied promise of rumours beyond. Taking the inefficiently-priced option I get a new pair of places I might want to check out (and realise I had no choice but to spend money, I think). Checking out a gambling stall I find that a) it is not Luck based and b) once I'm at the section where the rules are explained, I have no choice but to gamble. I elect to go all-in on the largest stake and lose it.
Recognising a pattern, I encounter this island's welcoming committee, a TUNNELER BEAST, which promptly eats me.
7 skill! Yeah!
I really didn't get to see much of this one but I liked what I did get to. Very lightly skimming ahead to see if I could go back to Altos though it looked like I get in a time loop where I'm zapped again, fight a storm cloud again, and so on. I may have missed a conditional that would prevent that, though.

A little under 24 hours to get in results for week 34.
Week 35 Crypt of the Sorceror (4 dice) Rogue Mage (Warlock magazine 10 or 10th Anniversary Yearbook) (4 dice)
So, a book that’s almost guaranteed to kill even a 12-24-12 character, and a mini-adventure that should be no trouble for anyone with an above-average Skill score. Just to make the choice a little bit more interesting, let’s have another one-off bonus…
Randomness Bonus Bonus points will be awarded based on the number of different situations you encounter which require you to roll a single die to determine what happens to you (note that different rounds of the same combat do not count as different situations – you only get to claim one roll for that fight). Make sure to list all the times you have to make such a roll.
If playing Rogue Mage: 1) You may only eat Provisions when specifically permitted to do so by the text. 2) To make the fight against the Clone Slime mildly challenging, the second time you fight a pair of Slime Figures, roll one die, divide the number rolled by 2 (rounding up), and increase their Skill score by the total. If you fight a third pair of Slime Figures, determine their Skill by adding the result of a similar roll to the Skill of the second pair.
Please state if you use a guide, if you allocate dice at character creation rather than taking them as they fall, or if you make more than one attempt at a book. Only combats which you win should be included in the list of enemies defeated.
Week 33 scoring 1st: evilwizard – 20 (stats bonus 5 + victory bonus 10 + most fights won bonus 5) 2nd: terrysalt – 14 (stats bonus 4+ victory bonus 10) 3rd: hallucination - 7 (stats bonus 2 + most fights won bonus 5) 4th: kalieum - 4 (stats bonus 4)

What are the rules on multiple attempts?
|
|
|
Post by a moderator on Aug 28, 2023 0:42:42 GMT
You can try up to three times, but your points total for the week will be reduced by 2 (to a minimum of 0) for each successive attempt. If your last try would score worse than a previous one, you are free to submit the best-scoring attempt, but please state how many times you tried regardless.

So I don't own a copy of Crypt, but given its reputation there was something I wanted to do when it came up. (Based on champskees's guide, stats rolled randomly.) Rather more than the 3 attempts maximum, but significantly fewer than I expected. (cycles = attempts). (For the sake of individual attempts for scoring - if this is even eligible - I generated 3 in mode 0 first, which in order were died to second rad hulk with 10/22/8 rolls, died to harpoon flies with 8/22/11 rolls and died to second rad hulk with 9/20/9 rolls.) Some stats for fun: generating a million attempts with max stats gave 5080 wins, or 0.508% winrate. A million attempts with properly random stats only won 387 times, or 0.0387% winrate. Generating several more wins, the next 10 wins rolled 12/15/9, 12/18/9, 12/15/11, 12/21/12, 12/19/8, 12/17/10, 12/17/11, 12/15/9, 12/24/12 and 12/17/12. Not a single win without max skill, but it seems stamina isn't actually that important. I did allow the character to drink the healing potion mid-combat though, not sure if that's actually permitted or not. Edit - After fixing some errors empirical testing suggests winrates of 0.0486% and 0.6% for fully random/max stats respectively

Kind of reminds me of my fascination with beating Trial Of Champions with Skill 10 Stamina 24 Luck 12, after rolling exactly that Avatar - but Champskees table has odds under .1%\stastically insignificant. Especially the latter is a well-designed book in many respects but spoiled by a ridiculous difficulty.
