It's comparable to popping along to the Mafia and telling them after their apprentice job you'd rather be a London stockbroker. Look at the start of evilwizard's kill list. I think you misinterpreted the 'changed'.

Kills: STONE GOLEM I don't think I count the ROCK GRUB LARVAE I'm described as taking 1d6 damage to kill in section 15 as it's not a proper combat, but their names are in all caps so I'll give them a mention. GIANT SPIDER DARK ELF x3 WHIRLPOOL SKELETON WARRIOR CAVE MANTICORE FOG ELEMENTAL ROCK DEMON WATER ELEMENTAL MOR ORTHOR (reduced to below 5) MOR ORTHOR, ELEMENTAL SUPREME Overly verbose writeup: Lords of Stone makes the first time I've played a fan creation so I'm not really sure what to expect, but given how bad some of the official books are this has to be better than some of those. Looking ahead shows it only has 200 sections, but the rules are very recognisable. I see I have 10 meals each worth 4 stamina, though I can only eat when the text tells me I can or when I'm in an unoccupied room, and only one meal at a time. I'm not sure if I can eat multiple meals if I spend multiple sections in the same unoccupied room; maybe the adventure is set out in a way this doesn't happen. Part of me also wants to note that if I'm in a room it's no longer unoccupied, but that's both clearly not what's intended and would also mean I can't eat, so I'm going to ignore that part of me. I've rolled decent stats though the stamina's a little low so I'll grab the stamina potion at the start. Starting out, the backstory mentions stuff about a wizard and various elementals. Oh hey, it's Stormslayer again! I'm then given some runestones, which follow a rock paper scissors thing, where Earth beats Air(?), Air beats Water(??), Water beat Fire (makes sense) and Fire beats Earth( ). I get to take 6 in any combination I want, so I take one of each, plus a spare Air one in case I need to survive falling out of a tower after beating the final boss, and a Water one in case something bad happens involving lava. The NPC says they're specifically only useful against the relevant Elemental, but that doesn't mean he's right (or that the author remembered this when writing later parts of the adventure). I quickly find myself inside and open a door. The inside looks suspiciously like a death trap of some sort - which I would think strange to find at the start of an adventure, but maybe the idea's that restarting when you've not committed any time yet is okay - so I close the door and continue onwards. I pry out a jewel from a box in case it'll activate some elemental-themed trap and am about to open the box when I notice it has the same section as opening it without getting the jewel. I figure one of the options must be a trap, so I leave it behind instead, and quickly find myself with another blind decision to make. I'm noticing a lot of these already; I feel the official adventures tend to at least give some set dressing to make the choices feel more informed even if the information isn't always useful, so it's feeling a little glaring here. Maybe I'm being unfairly critical today. Anyway, I pick a direction and can either try and force my way through a boarded shut door or ignore it. Why can't I remove the boards if I'm on the side to see them? Anyway, if the door's boarded shut from this side it's probably to keep something unpleasant on the other side out. I carry on to another t-junction and pick a direction, finding a translation scroll before being pointed down the other passage. I'm starting to suspect this adventure is one linear passage with single-section offshoots that will either give you a (necessary?) item or harm you in some way. Did I miss something by not taking the other direction from the earlier t-junction, or did I avoid some trap? I come across a dead dwarf with a warhammer and medallion that the text notes as suspiciously un-looted. It could be a trap for would-be heroes like me, but it's equally likely there's some sort of anti-dark elf protection on them. One of the illustrations interspersing some sections is a hammer and medallion, so I'll assume they're more important than just traps and go for them. In case authorial fiat says I can only have one, I'll assume the medallion is more likely to have some mystical purpose and get (wear) it first. Oh hey, possible authorial fiat appears, in the shape of a STONE GOLEM. The text suggests I could have taken the warhammer first, but I'll have to fight it dealing only 1 damage per hit with my sword. Still, there's enough of a skill difference I shouldn't have a problem. Annoyingly I take a hit on the penultimate round, but otherwise walk away unscathed. "Walk away" being the operative term, as I apparently forget all about the warhammer. I hope that thing was only to make the golem easier and the medallion was all I needed. This time whim makes me try a boarded up door, which gets me munched on by beasties for my trouble. And the door was magically sealed shut while they were there? What an utterly bizarre trap. Anyway, I'm deeming this an unoccupied room and eating a meal. Ten meals seems like a lot of expendable health for only a 200 section adventure. Maybe the stamina potion was a mistake after all. Anyway, I try another door. This one isn't boarded up so maybe it'll have something more interesting in it. Like spiders! Anyway, I kill the GIANT SPIDER. It had some special rule where every second attack round it spat webs at me, but it wasn't clear if that was in place of the attack round or as well as. I ruled the latter, but it's possible it was supposed to get twice as many shots at me with the webs than it did. Winning prompts me to take a luck test, leaving the room should I fail. I opt to eat another meal here - wasting a potential point of health but I doubt I'll run out of healing - as logically I'm in a now unoccupied room (assuming the luck test doesn't reveal another occupant), but it feels a little strange eating at this section. It turns out moot as I pass the luck test and find a fourth Useful Sounding Item. I'm faced with another binary choice of directions, though lately the options have been given descriptions. I figure the narrow side passage is a good way to get trapped and carry on, coming to a door I can hear something behind. Hoping to leverage my high skill to continue padding my kill count I open it to find not one but three somethings. I kill the DARK ELVES and at this point actually double-check I was supposed to add 6 to my roll for skill. Maybe enemies will get tougher towards the end. I get a gem for my troubles and the option to swap my sword for one of their scimitars (deals 3 damage per hit but I reduce my attack strength by 1). I'm pretty sure attack strength is king in FF combat, so I opt to keep my original sword. A further search of the room turns up another full stamina restore - seriously what's with this adventure giving near-limitless reserves of stamina - and a warning about a well. I'm then attacked by the most insultingly-weak enemy yet (and given the option to use a runestone to instantly kill it should I feel threatened by a skill 5 stamina 6 opponent). I don't even have to bother rolling attack rolls for it each round with how badly outmatched it is. Further on I ignore a chest and go left, opening another door where I can use my translation scroll to find some treasure. Once again I'm have to choose what to look at first, which is getting tiresome already. I can't wait to randomly guess wrong, lose 2 points of stamina and have the text decide I leave some critical item behind. Anyway, I try the cloak first. It doesn't have any special properties but I can roll it up and use it as a shield to reduce opponents' attack strength by 1, for a total of 6 rounds until it falls apart. This is preceded with "if" and logically it should be optional, so I'm going to assume I'm not using it until I want to. The boots are described as magically speeding up my movements, letting me add 2 to the result when Testing my Skill. Which makes me more likely to fail, because I need to roll equal to or under my skill. I'm going to use these as clearly intended rather than as-written. This just leaves the small bottle, and as I feel one of these has to be a trap I'm going to ignore it. I find another door and open it to find it full of sand. There's also a diamond in there, but the text frames it as a trap and I thought I glimpsed a sand-related section with no numbers at the end when scrolling through, so I'm leaving well enough alone. And hey I go back to the junction from earlier and go the other way. I come to a shaft where I find another cryptic clue before having to try and jump. With my magic boots I literally can't fail the skill test, and soon open another door. I didn't look in the room through the grate in the door before entering, so with the much better view of 'being in the room' I can't see whatever's presumably in here and have to leave. What...? I hope there's magic involved. There'd better be magic involved. Oh hey, I actually get trapped in here, fair enough. I'm lucky enough to talk my captor into releasing me - I also note that, strictly speaking, I'm in an unoccupied room (my captor is outside), so I chow down on a meal between sentences. I continue engaging in my newest pastime of opening every door I come across and find a room containing slime and a skeleton. I'm generally wary of slime in fantasy settings, so just check the skeleton. The grate the slime is pooled around could conceivably be the well I've been warned of as well, thinking on it. Anyway, I can take the skeleton's helmet, bow, or slime-covered sword. Seems like another reason to avoid the slime; this guy was trying to fight or cut it and wound up dead anyway. I've got a silver arrow, so the bow sounds the most useful item here. It seems magic, and curiosity demands I check the helmet as well. Actual player curiosity, not authorial fiat curiosity. Anyway, this animates the skeleton. I honestly don't want to fight a stamina 8 thing only 1 damage at a time, and the Escape option is looking very tempting given I can see the text says I leave the helmet after all and I'm pretty sure I'm done with this room anyway, but I've got my kill count to think about. Ehhhhhh. Okay it's dead. I find a room containing an altar and some dead elves. I can inspect the corpses, leave a weapon at the altar due to an inscribed message or just leave. Frankly I've only just got this bow and arrow together and I can't go swordless, so I just leave. Once again I find myself at a dead-end and backtrack to the last junction. It gets very cold and hey, my cloak does something! Anyway I find a guy and he immediately dies. I find myself facing a manticore and am asked if I have a shield. I had to double-check the cloak's section, and it says offers protection in place of a shield, so I guess I can't count that here. The end result is I have to test my luck against a spike volley. (Not skill? The stat those boots of moving very quickly boost doesn't help to dodge something by, say, moving very quickly out of the way?) The manticore scores some hits on me but I kill it. ("If you somehow win this titanic battle", the text says. It's only skill 9 and I've got the strong impression it's a mandatory fight.) Still, I'm beat up enough to actually use my stamina potion. Now I've only got 28 stamina points worth of meals and another full heal left. Oh, add another 4 point healing potion to that. This adventure really doesn't want you to die in combat or to stamina damage in general. I come across a barrel containing disgusting-looking soup and a box at the bottom. Trying to pull out the box gets me bitten on the arm for a point of damage, and while I'm given the opportunity to try again this feels like the setup for skill damage, so I give up and carry on. I hear what sounds like another monster in a passage so I head right towards it, where I run into some fog, except this is actually FOG (ELEMENTAL). Anyway I kill it. I open a door and find myself trapped in the room of sticking your hand into torches. The torches are named, but I haven't found any information that would help me here. Though judging from the names maybe one's a skill test, one a stamina test, one a luck test and the other... a fight a monster test? Maybe? I try Titan's Strength, which turns out to be a stamina test and not a skill test like I was hoping. I roll low though, and get out not only unscathed but luckier for the experience. A shame, I wanted to see how my magic boots of moving really fast made me better at sticking my hand in a fire. Moving on, I can reach into a dark hole and probably have my hand bitten off or something, or not. The passage starts heading underwater, and I'm asked if I have a runestone of air. I do, and it's not asking if I actually want to use it, so I guess it's declared that I'm using it. At least give me the choice to save resources even if it turns out there aren't any more uses left for it, hey? I come to a door I don't have the key for and have to knock. Eventually it's opened by a ROCK DEMON that announces itself as the guardian of Mor Orthor (the big bad). I must be nearly there. I can use my runestone of fire to weaken it, and as this feels like I'm near the end and it's got pretty respectable stats I elect to do so. That actually made the difference. I'm down to 5 health, the demon hits for 3 damage, and 2 rounds were ties thanks to the reduced skill. In any case, the demon lies dead at my feet, I get a luck point I can't actually take, and I use my other stamina full restore. After that, I'm finally face-to-face with Mor Orthor! I'm immediately asked if I'm wearing a hooded cloak, and I'm wondering if I wasn't supposed to use my fur cloak vs the cold earlier after all if there's another cloak. On the one hand it's a FUR cloak, but on the other its given function was being a makeshift shield. On the third hand, the cold passage didn't ask if I was wearing a cloak, just if I had one, and maybe it was intentionally nonspecific to account for either cloak, assuming they're both obtainable at that point. Mor Orthor summons a WATER ELEMENTAL and I'm told I waste my other runestone of air by throwing it at the elemental to no effect. Y'know, even though it's always been a choice whether or not to use a runestone in combat up to this point. Given there was an item check just before this that I didn't have I'm guessing this isn't really a water elemental, but the runestone's still used up. Urgh. Whatever, everything's weak in this adventure and at least it's one for the kill count. Hey, I get to use my bow and silver arrow! It... doesn't actually ask me whether I have a bow at this point, or even really allude to it in any way beyond the option being "shoot at him with a silver arrow". I have the bow so it's all good, but if I'd missed that room entirely I'm not sure I'd realise that wasn't a permissible option with just the silver arrow. Mor Orthor zaps me with lightning, but my earth runestone absorbs it and I finally close to melee range. He gets the first hit in, but with the damage from the arrow one luck-boosted attack brings him to the '5 or less' threshold for something to happen. It turns out the 'something' is him running away through a wall. I'm given the option of searching for hidden doors or looting his study first. I think speed is of the essence lest he set up some sort of trap, but I note I'm now in an unoccupied room and stop to have a meal while definitely being in hot pursuit of the sorcerer. Pressing a button on the wall teleports me to a cavern with a crumbling bridge. If I still had a runestone of earth I'd be forced to use it here, but as it is I'm forced to just auto-pass the skill check thanks to my speedy boots. I reach Mor Orthor in time to see him turn into a combination elemental thing. He's got pretty nasty stats and also has various special attacks, though these can be mitigated somewhat by consuming a runestone. Or you can also use your remaining runestones to reduce his skill by 1 and his stamina by 3 each. Why would I save them to partially mitigate certain attacks if he even happens to use the one that matches the stones I have when I could just reduce his chance of hitting me to use those attacks in the first place and the number of rounds I need to fight for? Needless to say I toss my two remaining runestones at him (and grumble a bit more about being forced to use a few other runestones earlier), leaving him at Skill 10 Stamina 12. In the end he only won the one round of combat before falling, and the adventure was won. I never did find out what "the key is in the wall" was about, though I definitely missed a key for the door near the end, and I'm only guessing that bewaring the well was to do with the slime. All in all I'd say this one started pretty badly but improved as it went on. It felt incredibly linear, but I saw in passing several times a section about fighting the second-in-command, so with how linear it felt I'm surprised I avoided that, wherever it was. I suppose it's also not too fair to judge a 200 section adventure for linearity. Combats were a bit over the top with how easy they were, especially paired with the copious amounts of stamina restoration available, and I really would've preferred it not to force the use of runestones outside of combats. I also don't recall ever seeing the text explicitly saying I could eat, despite the rules text implying that would happen at times. Maybe I just never visited those sections. Checking this for typos I realised I never remembered to use my makeshift cloak shield for the tougher fights near the end. Whoops. Wait, why "Lords of Stone"? There's only one villain and he's to do with all four elements. By the way, is there much point in continuing to do my long form writeups for my attempts? I'm kind of enjoying documenting what is usually either my first attempt at something or at least the first go in 15 years or so, but it feels like these are getting longer and longer (admittedly in part due to actually beating this one) and it does make the play attempt that much more of a drag.

By the way, is there much point in continuing to do my long form writeups for my attempts? I'm kind of enjoying documenting what is usually either my first attempt at something or at least the first go in 15 years or so, but it feels like these are getting longer and longer (admittedly in part due to actually beating this one) and it does make the play attempt that much more of a drag. It's ultimately up to you of course (it will be a bit of a commitment if you intend to see the competition through to the end and do a book a week for the rest of the year), but I've been enjoying your writeups so if you have the time and patience then do carry on

Fair enough, if someone's reading them that's good enough for me. I'm not going to be participating every week anyway as sometimes I just don't have the books for a given week and I don't fancy just using a guide to approximate it.
