It's not 100% clear, but given that the fight in section 507 specifically states that the slow-moving gargoyles can only advance one square per round, the implication is that your character(s) can move more than one square a round. The rerelease must have altered the rules as my copy makes it very clear. "MOVE: You can move to any square on the tactical map. However, you cannot move through or end your move on a square already occupied by another character. There are no diagonal moves. If you begin a round adjacent to an opponent, you can only move away if you chose the defend option last round."

The rerelease seems to have addressed a few of the problems with the old version. As mentioned, it clarified the movement rule. The sage's healing is restricted to once per reference (and can't be used at all if the reference contains a fight) so it's no longer the equivalent of near infinite health for the entire party. The adjust scroll can no longer take points out of endurance (it was insane that they let you do that to begin with). So I think the whole series just got a lot harder.

Is it ever a good idea to summon the faltyn? It's fun seeing the various ways he swindles you out of valuable items but if you were playing to win, would it ever be worth it?

I can't be of any help with these questions, but the thread makes me want to get around to completing reading this series.

I think there is one point in book 4 where it might be useful, if you can't take any of the other character options. Cheeky wee blighters aren't they?

The faltyn is a lot of fun but it feels like they should offer enough benefit that you're at least tempted to summon him. As is, it's more a case of "let's see what the scam is then go back and make a real decision".
