This is quite fun - a video from Numberphile, back in 2012, not sure it's come up before:

Not only is it fun, but it's also made me think that I have perhaps been pronouncing Zagor wrong my entire life. He pronounces it zah-gor, I've always said zay-gor.

I'm sure that someone (possibly kieran) who's played the Legend of Zagor board game, which has an audio component, mentioned that the name is pronounced Zay-gor in the game.

Well, good. I do feel oddly vindicated by that, given that I've been reading it that way in my head for thirty-plus years!

I used to think it was zag-or [the zag like the one in zig-zag] and pronounced more like Zaggor, but I've known better for a few years now.
Nothing compared to the surprise I had when I found out Joe Dever's Giaks were not the 'Guy-acks' I'd been pronouncing them as, but gee-acks, (with the G hard like 'go' or 'gigabyte').

To this day I would think of them as gyaks (all one syllable). I also think of Kai as pronounced Ka when I know it's meant to be Ky. I basically stick to the pronunciation the guy who introduced me to the series used.

This is just out of curiosity since your guide suggests escaping the barbarian fight. At what skill level is it mathematically advantageous to kill him instead? I figure a skill 12 could probably win undamaged and a skill 7 should absolutely escape but where's the point where it officially becomes a better bet to go for the 0 damage kill?

I suppose you need one of the mathematical people to have worked this out.
The only thing I would suggest is if you have stomped all over the Cyclops then taking 2 damage means nothing as you will recover the stamina just afterwards as you can eat provisions. What is the point in taking even a mathematical risk when you can gain the stamina back immediately?
If you could not eat provisions almost straight away then your idea really would require some analysis.

Champskees has mentioned before if the differences in probability are very small (under .5% or something) he doesn't factor them into his calculations, as for example he didn't (before posting) with the Demon Dagger in Port Of Peril. In this case, I would guess a Skill 11+ hero would be better off fighting, but it's highly unlikely such an Avatar would die from requiring provisions \ the barbarian fight.

Oh, it was purely academic. I doubt a character strong enough to beat the barbarian in straight rounds cares too much about 2 damage either. It's just something that jumped out at me while I was reading through it.

What is the skill/stamina of the barbarian?

What is the skill/stamina of the barbarian? He's an unimpressive Skill 7 Stamina 6. (BTW, I seem to recall that Livingstone confirmed in You are the Hero that the Warlock's name is indeed pronounced ZAY-gor.)

Characters with a SKILL of 10 or higher expect to lose less than 2 stamina in combat with a SKILL 7 STAMINA 6 opponent. I'd include a table but I can't get it to copy from Excel easily. Skill 10 takes on average 1.25 damage. Skill 9 takes on average 2.16 damage.

It's a great table isn't it? Unfortunately, it's not mine and I forget who made it: someone on this forum perhaps?

Re the potion of fortune (going by how the rules are written in the Wizard series 2 edition) do you think it’s acceptable to use it to increase your initial luck by 2? It does say you can increase initial luck using it but twice seems generous.
Also technically you can use a potion in battle for this gamebook only but I personally wouldn’t feel comfortable doing that as I don’t think the authors intended that (rules amended after this gamebook) and in a real life situation it wouldn’t be realistic. Jus my thought on it.

Jus my thought on it. The rules allow for it so feel free to raise your initial luck by 2 and drink in combat. Drinking stamina potions midfight is the only way for heroes with poor stats to win so, intended or not, I think it's fine to take advantage of the literal reading here.

I usually get a Potion of Fortune and quaff the lot before even entering Firetop Mountain, increasing my Initial Luck by 2.
The rules state the Potions may be : 'taken at any time during your adventure'
So downing a measure of a Potion of Strength mid-battle (whilst making a witty Arnold Schwarzenegger style pun) is totally acceptable.
