Which books are those? I've just dug out Magehunter, the only book I have in digital form, and it has about 44K. I don't think Magehunter was drastically shorter than other books.

Yes would be good to know which books.
I would guess some of the earlier ones only have around 35k-45k words if you take out the rules.
One of the succeses of Early FF in my view is that they weren't too wordy - they had character but were very terse and to the point. A lot of gamebooks now are too verbose in my opinion.

I assume House of Pain is a gamebook where every option is "jump around"?

79k Deathtrap?! That seems way too high.

79k Deathtrap?! That seems way too high. Before remembering the title of this thread I briefly thought 79K Deathtrap was a Games Workshop-esque sequel of Deathtrap Dungeon set in in the year 79,000 AD. Which would have been the coolest thing ever.

Which is the shortest ff book? Not counting starship traveller or freeway fighter. I would guess one of Andrew Chapman's, his writing is very terse. Or perhaps Citadel of Chaos for the same reason. Yeah, when I saw this question, I immediately thought about Space Assassin.
