I seem to recall seeing the Out Of The Pit cover art used for a books ad a while back...

Chris Achilleos seems to be a repeat offender Or rather Warlock Magazine is the repeat offender!
I think I've seen the Space Assassin cover used elsewhere too, but i'm not sure.

I have found said books advert - it was included as a flyer in a magazine, and I've been keeping it in my copy of OOTP.
There are two pieces of re-purposed art on it - as well as the OOTP cover ("Red Hell" by Christos Achilleos), there's also a reproduction of the Warlock 12 cover above.
Such a pity Fantasy & SF Book Club Swindon didn't actually sell me any books off the back of it!

Although not strictly repurposed art, this skeleton from the internal illustrations of "Death on the Reik" by Martin McKenna looks familiar...

Hey Bloodbeasthandler, thanks for crediting me blog! This is probably the oddest one, alt fashion brand Disturbia used Deathtrap Dungeon art as wallpaper in their shop and a few photoshoots. www.disturbia.co.uk/files/blackdog-wallpaper-1920x1080.jpgChris Achilleos "Orc Charge" which appears as one of the colour plates in the original Out of the Pit and appears on GWs Ravening Hordes and also on White Dwarf #89 for the Ravening Hordes launch: Warlock #9 was originally the cover of Chaos for the ZX Spectrum by Games Workshop And more Chris Achilleos Fighting Fantasy / Games Workshop crossover madness: Fighting Fantasy figure advert, and also front cover of White Dwarf 65 And probably the most obscure and unofficial one - Russ Nicholsons Zombie from Warlock of Firetop Mountain on the front cover of a heavy metal fanzine.

Zhu. Great stuff. Sadly I don't have an original [larger format] copy of Out of The Pit. And (without trying to derail the thread) what were the other full colour plates in there? Could you direct me to them? Not all of them seem to be in Titannica. Stop Press. Found Dark Elf by Mark Bromley Out of the pit (Puffin 1985) and next to it White Dwarf 69 (Sep 1985).

As the opposite to this thread -
Were any of many pictures in Titan & Out Of the Pit repurposed from elsewhere? Lots of them seem cropped from larger works, and quite a lot are, well frankly a bit crappy!

A bit of internet digging and I found the Out of the Pit colour plates here: gssq.blogspot.com/2008/07/always-be-wary-of-any-helpful-item-that.html And here's a cheeky one: Titan, from 1986. and Warlock 11 and here's some hideous weird ones from the 1986 Dungeons & Dragons Annual, based on the cartoon series. which is a blatant copy of Russ Nicholsons sleeping orc from The Warlock of Firetop MountainAnd this pair... Which is a terrible, terrible copy of Edward Crosby's goblins from Caverns of the Snow Witch Not sure how they got away with such horrible, copyright infringing artwork, but there it is!

Lots of them seem cropped from larger works, and quite a lot are, well frankly a bit crappy! Some of the illustrations in Out of the Pit seem a bit rushed and this might be because each and every monster needed an illustration, and they did not have examples to choose from from the FF books published at the time (1985). Titan. Many illustrations from the FF books. Many where the artist was clearly given a brief to draw something to requirement (birdmen stealing the Crown of Kings, Colletus being blinded to name just two). Some might be (at that time) unpublished artwork the artist had knocking around in his studio or lying in a drawer and they got bunged into the book because it was time for an illustration. Some of it seems a bit random to be honest. I'm having a think about your question there … and am wondering if the best place to look is old copies of White Dwarf from the early to mid 80's.

I'll have a look through my copies soon and list a few pictures which I think are 'odd'

OK - Titan
page 25 Garius of Halak - looks cropped to me, looks more like a pic from ad&d or suchlike
page 66 Bad wizard picture - agains looks cropped and seriously generic
page 72 - brigand with knife - looks like it had amore specific purpose
page 81 - chaos army is very non specific and looks more White Dwarf ish
page 84 - The seige diagram looks reused from some Wargames example
page 140 - Trickster picture, bit crap and confusing
page 148 - weird monsters worship crappy dog
page 162 - Quick we need a picture of skeletons!
page 214 - ditto a dark elf!
page 216 - very generic seige picture
page 222 - really terrible 'Beano art' style slave picture - totally out of place!
page 259 - sea elves picture - very washed out , and they appear to have legs
These are the 'Titan' standouts for me - anyone agree?

Yep, agree (with the exception of Logaan - it's explained what is going on there on p142). As for the others I don't remember seeing them elsewhere (which doesn't prove anything either way to be honest). As for apparently randomly-determined artwork in a book, have you ever seen the Warhammer Fantasy Battle 3rd edition rulebook? Some really good pictures but they are rarely relevant to the text!

And here's a reference photo done right by Martin Mckenna. Spotting the inspirations and influences of Martin McKenna's illustrations might be worth a thread of its own.

OK - Titan page 81 - chaos army is very non specific and looks more White Dwarf ish In fact with this one - if you have 'You are the Hero', on page 184-185 this picture appears and its title is War of the Wizards, by Alan Langford (1986).. so that would suggest the picture is not a generic one.

Playing the MB/GW Heroquest (1989) board game with the family last night, and noticed the rulebook re-uses one of the Citadel Fighting Fantasy figures images from the Autumn 1985 Citadel Journal: Same character as the one on the cover of White Dwarf 65 and the figure advert.

I know that somebody was selling the cover art for Titan as a poster back in the '90s, without any associated FF branding. I remember being rather surprised seeing it hanging in a friend's bedroom. Not sure if that counts as repurposing.
Never really thought about it before, but this must be a wonderful time-saver for artists commissioned to do another piece of art for a kids' book or whatever. Get one of your old pieces, make a few vague alterations, then flog it off like new and make a few extra quid. In the pre-internet era, who'd ever notice?
