Getting to the very difficult decisions now. I think I have to go with Siege of Sardath. For
the extremely unfair bit of stopping you using ingenuity by turning into a dark elf when you already have wings in order to fly straight to the end.
But it's a damn fine book.
I've decided through this btw that Slaves of the Abyss is the best FF book of all. I love the way you're actually not that great a hero, but you can achieve greatness in difficult circumstances that are more thrust upon you. Compare that to Deathtrap Dungeon, where it's me me me, or even Kharé, where you're meant to be the best Analand can offer. |

I never completed slaves when I was in school, although I did enjoy it. Just never worked out the crucial bit where you do the right thing at the right time (despite being told to in the introduction!). I loved the encounter with the goblins and ogre.
Now I'm older (not wiser necessarily), I appreciate it even more. I particularly like the use of items/encounter markers (multi coloured wound in this case) that Paul Mason and/or Steve Williams use (with even more like this in BVP), rather than the blunter Livingstone approach of 'turn to the number on the key'.

As I've said, I'm only sporadically voting in this thing. But it sort of baffles me that there's a book still in the running for the greatest of all time in which if you roll according to the rules at the beginning you will probably start with less than a 1% chance of winning even if you do everything right.
I know the excuses about how the miserable statistics are essential to the gritty realism of the thing, but isn't that just b*****ks? A well-designed FF gamebook should be giving a character of 10/18/10 a two-digit percentage chance of winning, imo, not 0.7% (as per Champskees).

No. Deathtrap Dungeon is way, way better than creature of havoc. But then again, the best book of Steve Jackson is obviously House of Hell. |

That book is responsible for my entire FF career (as 'Deathtrap on Legs' prompted Steve J to ask me and Steve W to 'contribute' to his FF RPG compendium). Sod it. In the next round I'm just going to have to go ahead and vote for Slaves, aren't I? Though I'll be honest, I always did think Creature of Havoc was a little overrated (though that may have just been annoyance at being accused of copying a book I hadn't read at the time). Obviously tactical voting exists, but there's very little you can do with one vote. The only thing that makes tactical voting even close to being an issue in this poll is the fact that only around 20 or so people are voting at all. And given that a vote is a negative expression, and many voters may be more motivated by positive feelings towards a book they favour -- and, let's be honest, these are gamebook fans -- it's hardly surprising if some try to game the system. |

I've not been following it properly, but did Creature of Havoc lose votes at the last moment? Is that what happened? As you say, DD seemed to surge... because it was on about 2 votes the last time I looked. The tactical voting works extremely well because it is not a secret ballot. Among the many possibilities, you can vote for one book, have people think it'll be eliminated, then switch vote at the last moment and 'save' it. One could create a load of alternative accounts and wait til nigh on closing time at the polls and then blitz a single title. Anyway, Sylas, as we see in the real world, a voting system needs the confidence of the electorate to be seen as valid and the greater the shenanigans, the lower the confidence. Remember folks: vote early! Vote often! |

The latter doesn't seem to be happening as the total votes aren't changing much. But yeah both Slaves and Creature were sitting at 5 votes at different times then both end up finishing with 4 votes while suddenly Deathtrap is out. I suppose people are entitled to change their minds, or they may see an opportunity to get rid of a big name book which they don't overly care for even if it's not their absolute least favourite. |

Tactical voting or no... We all know in the core that in the end there can be only one winnner...
And what is obvious to you, for me is not:
I did think in that dinnertable that the Powerfull Master of the Night was the count of Hadet (there was even an ally saying it in the book). I did not have a clue it was Franklins.
THAT BOOK deserves the final victory for sure.
