I'm glad I found this thread. Was only thinking he other day how similar the story is to LOTR. Elves, one mask to rule them all, marsh lands, etc etc. Also how I remember that this book was more impossible than Havoc to finish, due to the unlikeliness of finding the orb. I'm glad I'm not the only one.

Hey, do you think any player since 1986 was actually stupid enough to turn to #49 instead of #40 when Ifor Tynin was exposed as the traitor? Go on, admit it!

I didn't even work out who the traitor was until I was 20!

This book is just stupid, I mean why would the ruler of a city be duped into thi blatant assassination attempt in the first place when they could send some other heroes to do their bidding? Although overall the adventure was good it wasn't good enough to justify its difficulty betterb played with multiple adventurers and a loade3d dice. I don't play with multiple characters to make the book any easier, justto make the book more interesting, like Crypt of the sorcerer the book just about scrapes it by chaetin, or bending the rules and using loaded dice.

Can someone show me all 12 mask-symbols? I'm stuck at 11. I remember there was some fun discussion of this on pages 20 and 21 of the Unique Answers Game Thread after Wilf asked: 9. Re-order the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. If these numbers were placed clockwise in ascending order on the circumference of a circle an equal distance from each other, joining them up in your new order would form one of the twelve Masks of Mayhem. These were the 12 shapes we came up with in the after discussion, along with their frequency in orderings of the numbers 1,2,3,4,5,6. I think these were the three you missed:

I know this is old , and I know you do good work and I know its probably obnoxious for a long time lurker like me to say this but
I wonder if its more efficient to accept the Tiger hunting quest and back off if you reach the tiger or "accidently" allow it to escape, provided you don't land on Square C9. This would avoid the -2 luck penalty in a book with too many luck tests.
Then again I wouldn't dream of trying to beat Masks of Mayhem without copious amounts of cheating
Like at this point
Roll 2D6. If 4-10, you cannot win (just give up now). If 2,3,11 or 12, continue.
Im just going to pretend i didn't roll 4-10

A very rough % chance of completing an FF worked out by extrapolating Champskees Table Skill, 3 permutations for Stamina and Luck.
Masks Of Mayhem Odds of Victory 3.7%
Technically 3.70(45 recurring)%. Obviously one stand-out is the crazy random roll with a 1 in 6 chance of success. I say it should be a 1 in 36 chance of failure. I imagine many of the kid audience being very scared by this gamebook with its many instant deaths, short writing (a short death can be harder than a Jackson-style long one), dark atmosphere and stark illustrations.
