Change the illustrator. Change the person who translated it to Portuguese. Remove the loop.
There, fixed.

What's wrong with the Portuguese version? Not much.

Change the original illustrator Malcolm Barter to current Malcolm Barter whose artwork has become most excellent. Plus it will confuse the hell out of readers.

The loop is as irritating and poor from an art perspective as it is from a gameplay perspective. I'm against keeping the loop, but if it were to be kept, it should be in some form of magic such as a time travel spell by Yaztromo - "You cry on a plain tree stump at your failure. Out of nowhere, Yaztromo's face appears, and says "one last chance!" . You open your eyes and it is the morning of your entire adventure again. "

The Crimson Tide handles the loop thing a helluva lot better than any FF book. Followed by The Talisman of Death.
IMHO.

I would like to see more detail about the climax when Gillibran arouses his people with his mighty implement.

I found your post forward and nasty.
We already know what happens in Stone Bridge after the "Mighty Implement" was returned.
The biggest mystery is how it was lost in the first place. My most mighty implement is always stashed in a Secure location (although there have been times I have produced it during a long session in the "Dice lounge")

Legend has it, after the events of FoD, Gillibran never again relinquished his tight grip on the shaft! In fact, his people began to complain that he was waving it around just a little more than was seemly. Please tell us more about your long sessions in the Dice Lounge. 'Legend' obviously never read Temple of Terror.

I know people hate the loop, but is it any worse than some illogical insta-death?

There's no need for an Instant Death to be illogical in this instance. If you don't find both parts of the hammer on your way through the forest, you could reach Stonebridge just ahead of the attack by the Trollish armies, and get caught up in the massacre of the Dwarves.

Or perhaps your character could re-enter the forest only to fall afoul of the mysterious 'little people' that killed Bigleg and his companions.
