I interested in trying to see how much Art there is in the average FF book.
The way I look at it you have: - -The Cover Art
-The Map (Not in all books) -Full page illustrations (about 20-30 / book around?)
-Incidental 'paragraph break' art.
Does this seem accurate to people? Is there consistency in how many full page illustrations there are / book?
Ty for any info.

You're pretty much right there. The map was an optional extra. You could pitch to have a 'time chart' or similar. But the rest of it was specified. At this remove in time I can't remember the exact number, but we were definitely told that we had to brief the artist for a specific number of full page illustrations (30?), and I think about 6 filler pictures.

I'd imagine in cases where there are more than 400 references (e.g. Jon Green, Creature Of Havoc), there would be a few more illustrations. There's also of course those times the artist has to give a vital\important clue, and the puzzles (neither of which would affect the number).

What do you mean 'we had to quote'? Were you an author?! ty!

That's Paul Mason, co-author of The Riddling Reaver, Slaves of the Abyss and Black Vein Prophecy, and writer of The Crimson Tide and Magehunter.

Incidentally, I doubt the number of illustrations would be in some kind of proportional relationship with the number of references either. That's not the way these things work. I think there was a fixed number set for the books. Variations between books are probably the result of authors under/over briefing or the editorial side changing the specifications in general.

Ah interesting. So when you turned in your manuscript you had to have 30 short briefs for art pieces? about a paragraph for each piece maybe?

The numbers you are looking for are all on the individual pages for each book on the wikia (fightingfantasy.fandom.com). I know, I counted them all myself!
Paul is right, by the end of the Puffin run is was pretty much a consistent 30 full page pics per book.
But the number bounces from 27 (Starship Traveller) to 34 (Warlock of Firetop Mountain).
Wizard kept roughly the same number of pics. Even Howl of the Werewolf only has 30.
The new Scholastic editions have only about 21 full page pics each.
