Anyone else heard of these? They were SJ's attempt to enter the Magic-dominated fantasy card game market. You collected fantasy-based cards, which you would play against others, you had a number of points on each card you'd scratch when you attacked your opponent (he\she'd do the same to defend themselves), while they could possess weapons, shields and magic. You could acquire treasure and go on quests (by defeating several powerful opponents, chiefly). The cards were accompanied with beautiful illustrations and great descriptions. I know because I acquired a single pack, many years ago when they first came out. The series was commercially unsuccessful, for several reasons: the scratch system, while a unique one, meant players were limited to a few uses before their cards were done away with, the playing system was comparatively ambitious and complicated, and the competitors were and are very strong.

Yes I loved this series. I actually bought a whole collection online not long ago to satisfy my nostalgia itch.
The Art was incredible on them, but the scratch playstyle just wasn't any good, and like you say then competititors like MtG came out, and playing Deck v Deck was more compelling then card v card.
