This solution is for the original version (I don't own the revised edition).
The series is back in form with this last book. It is clever and, pretty much like in Eye of the Dragon, the difficulty stems from figuring out the correct path, and not dumb luck with the dice.
Agility doesn't matter here, but Psi does, and the optimal path will change slightly based on your Psi score.
- Get the teardrop from the introduction
- Ask the innkeeper about a four leaf clover
- Get the four leaf clover
- Pass by
- Buy one of the magical charms
- Buy the luck charm (use it up to three times to decide, in advance, the result of a dice roll)
- Use the luck charm to roll 4+
- Fight the Cutpurse
- Invite the gypsy to join you in a drink
- Get the crystal ball (yeah, pretty scummy)
- You have the four leaf clover
- Either go to the joust and explain your quest to the knight, or go see Hrothgar and be scummy again to get the fragment of armour
- +2 Vigour
- Get 4 salves of healing (they restore 4 Vigour each)
- You still have your sword
- Pay him the money
- Ask him about the two last items
- Stay
- You haven't killed anyone except for the cutpurse
- Get the ashes of a saint
- Pick off the robbers with your bow
Here, you will have to roll 5D6 and score 3+ on at least three of them to succeed. If you fail, you will encounter a difficult fight.
If your initial Vigour is < 28 and your Psi is < 6, OR if your initial Vigour is >= 28 but your Psi is < 7:
- Use the luck charm a maximum of one time, for the last roll, IF it will help you succeed. If you make it, proceed with the rest of the solution.
- If you don't make it, use your salves if needed, then Fight four Robbers. If you still have two charges in the luck charm, use one of them here.
- Once you've defeated one Robber, continue the fight until you've killed all of them, then proceed with the rest of the solution.
Otherwise:
- Use up to the last two charges of your luck charm for the last two rolls, IF it will help you succeed. If you make it, proceed with the rest of the solution.
- If you don't make it, use your salves if needed, then Fight four Robbers. If you still have any charges in the luck charm, use them here.
- Once you've defeated one Robber, continue the fight until you've killed all of them, then proceed with the rest of the solution.
- Restore all your Vigour
- You do not have a jade horn-shaped amulet
- Get the hair of a nun
- Greet him
- Do as he asks
- Get the ring of light
- Either climb the cliff and climb back down to help the beast, or wait, and you will get a hint for the next encounter
- Take the right-hand path
- Walk on
- Ignore this and walk on
- Use the ring of light
- +1 Vigour
- Use an item
- Use the crystal ball
- Proceed up the stairs
- Go left
- Try the door to your left
- Knock
- You have both a fragment of armour and the hair of a nun
- Luther explains how to use them
- You have the ashes of a saint
- Luther explains how to use them
- Continue on along the corridor
- Ignore it and carry on
- The illustration here gives you the solution to the maze
- Go North, West, South, East, East, South, West, North
- Walk across the room and leave via the corridor
- Step under the sword or take it, it makes no difference
- Release her
- +2 permanent Psi, get silver coins
- You may use an item (the silver coins) to help you solve the riddle here
- Open the door with the lead plaque
- Advance across the room
- Find some other way to fight it
- Use your lantern
- Open the bottle
- Choose stamina
- +1 permanent Vigour since you are unwounded (otherwise, it would restore all your Vigour)
- Open the door with the bronze plaque
- Look in the larder
- Get a jar of salt
- Go over to the hearth
- Fight the Bearskin Rug (this is an easy fight, but if you still have two charges in the luck charm, use one here)
- Get the bearskin rug
- You have a bearskin rug
- Try to get at the mask
- Think of something else to try
- You have a jar of salt
- Take out one of your items
- Use the four leaf clover
- If you still have a charge in the luck charm, use it now, otherwise Test your Psi with 2D6: Failure = game over
- You left the clover on Slank's mask
- You still have the teardrop
- Luther told you about the armour fragment and the nun's hair
- You have the ashes of a saint
- You free the souls Slank had kept imprisoned. You are referred as Demonslayer, Knight of Souls, and other flattering titles. You are rich.
