I'm wondering what might be some of the best mature gamebooks and gamebook authors. Life's Lottery is quite large and interesting but also old (in the sense it has a number of heavy references to pop culture from before I was born in the eighties) and not that brilliant imho, and if you like illustrations, it doesn't have any. Other than that, Meanwhile is probably aimed at students and has brilliant artwork. I read one of Victoria Hancox's gamebooks "Nightshift" and found it well-written but heavily difficult to work out the true path.

Matt Youngmark's Choose-o-matic books are hilarious.

Matt Youngmark's Choose-o-matic books are hilarious. I'm reading Time Travel Dinosaur at the moment. You probably haven't heard of Lose Your Own Adventure, let alone read it, but it reminds me of that in that there seem to be just one or two good endings in a big gamebook with many endings. The sense of humour reminds me of Inside Job (which I really like, even though those Netflix nutters cancelled it) or Futurama. I'm not blown away by this gamebook but I think that's more because his writing style and comedy isn't for everyone - would I prefer something more involving and serious, something with a different premise, something less dark? It's definitely well-written, and I'd download another one in the hope I enjoy it more than this.

Personally, I like Zombocalypse Now and Thrusts of Justice more than Time Travel Dinosaur but if you weren't fussed about that one, those ones probably won't blow you away either.
