The Wizard from Tarnath Tor is probably the easiest adventure I have come across thus far in the Gamebook Adventures series. Good to see the author has balanced enemy difficulty correctly, but on the whole I was disappointed. The wilderness areas seemed quite dull and uneventful, the city itself not being too interesting either. It took me a very short while to map this one out too; in summary, I found this adventure a bit half-baked. A good comparison would be Fighting Fantasy’s Starship Traveller – well designed, but brief, boring & more of a Choose Your Own Adventure title.
Recommended Fitness: Minimum is fine (8+ needed to wear Light Plate, otherwise take Chainmail).
Start with:
- 40 Pestados.
- Battered Sword (2 Offence).
- Finders Stone.
Quarry
- Visit the outfitters.
- Leave.
- Talk to Alladar regarding the other band heading north.
- Take Alladar’s Silver Bracelet.
- Head over to the blacksmiths.
- This is the first time.
- Take Battle-Axe (5 Offence, -20 Pestados).
- Carry on looking at items.
- Take Light Plate Armour (5 Defence, -15 Pestados).
- Leave.
- Visit the temple.
- This is the first time.
- Buy a Healing Salve (Restores 10 Vitality when used, -3 Pestados).
- Leave.
- Leave Quarry immediately.
- You did not purchase a horse at the outfitters.
Wilderness
- Head straight into the Northlands.
- Avoid the mine.
- Head out of the hills & to the east while travelling in a semi-circle.
- Take Provisions (meat).
- Start forging a more direct route through the hills.
- You have Provisions.
- You have extra meat Provisions made up from recent foraging.
- Avoid the gully & continue through the bush to the side of the gully.
- You are on foot.
- You want to head straight into the ruins.
Taranth Tor
- Make your way up a nearby pile of broken up rocks.
- Test Fitness. Success = Jump down.
- Run for the door at the far side of the room.
- Run to the right towards the green light.
- Try to speak to the animated corpse.
- Volunteer to help with Zelbrook’s experiments.
- Choose life.
- Restore Vitality to full.
- Take Metallic Ring.
- Aim for some structures in the distance that look the most intact.
- Examine the statues more closely.
- Fight the living statue.
- You not using a mace.
- PLACE BOOKMARK HERE.
- Fight Off 5 Def 3 Vit 20 Living Statue.
- Run south along the street where there are fewer statues.
- Run into the keep.
- Head down.
- Boldly go speak to the goblyns.
- Go with the goblyns.
- Offer your services in return for being shown the way on.
- Face the undead creature on behalf of the goblyns.
- You have a Metallic Ring.
- Approach the alchemist openly & negotiate with it.
- You do not possess any gryffon eggs.
- Take Healing Potion (restores 10 Vitality when used).
- PLACE BOOKMARK HERE.
- Fight Off 3 Def 3 Vit 30 Constricting Roots.
- Test Fitness. Fail = 6 Damage & Fight Off 4 Def 3 Vit 15 Vampiric Roots.
- Open the carved wood chest before you go.
- Take Alladar’s Spellbook.
- Take Carved Ebony Wand.
- Take Bag of Old Currency.
- Explore the library first.
- Command the hand to show you a book that will give great magic power.
- Risk taking the book.
- You possess a Metallic Ring (3 Damage).
- Take Tome of Power.
- Take Dusty Potion of Rejuvenation (restores 10 Vitality when used).
- Take Dusty Potion of Rejuvenation (restores 10 Vitality when used).
- Ask how to get past the statues guarding the stairwell.
- You have Alladar’s Silver Bracelet.
- You possess Alladar’s Silver Bracelet.
- Travel the dark, narrow path.
- Move up to the motioning figure (to understand the story a bit better).
- Try & outpace the stalking creature by fleeing the area as fast as you can.
- You possess a Tome of Power.
- Cut down more of the disorganised cultists while you can.
- You are wearing a Metallic Ring (+4 Vitality).
- You do not possess a Hunting Crossbow (5 Damage).
- PLACE BOOKMARK HERE.
- Fight Off 5 Def 5 Vit 24 Gorgoth, Bandit Chief.
- Ultimate Victory.
