Not much going on in the fan art section!
I thought I'd share a bit of me drawing up a custom, "old school" Fighting Fantasy Adventure sheet for Gates of Death.
I had drawn up an Adventure Sheet a while ago in Adobe Illustrator, based on the original Warlock of Firetop Mountain one. Having read Gates of Death I realised it needed a little alteration to suit the adventure, removing the Jewels and allowing more space for the potions.
Now I've always loved the design work done on the original Fighting Fantasy adventure sheet - it's neat, tidy and has a great tension between bookishness and creating a fantasy atmosphere, but I also think Gary Chalks more illustrated adventure sheet for Lone Wolf is a classic, and also wanted to tie the theme of the sheet visually into the theme of the book.
So I printed out the layout and roughly sketched on it to get the general idea down. As there are quite a few potions in Gates of Death I thought that could be a a nice theme to develop, and the Smoke-oil transforming Demons back into humans was quite a striking visual, and something that could be played upon and suits the border quite well so...
After the initial rough, drew this up on a sheet of A3 paper in pencil - carefully measuring all the sizes of the sheet and bounding box so it would fit properly, but made it less wide so I could compose the rest in the computer, and then inked the drawing before erasing the pencil lines. I normally draw on smooth Bristol Board, but I used cartridge paper for this, just to try it - it's a lot softer and lines are a bit more textured. Feels more like a paperback book.
After that I also drew a Khopesh instead of a basic sword for the Monster Encounter Boxes, to make it a bit more Gates of Death then scanned it all into the computer, cleaned it up, removing the grey background to create line pure art, and introduced the pictorial elements to the typography and layout, like so:
Reasonably happy with how it looked I printed it out and gave it a test run, making sure it fit inside the book, then playing through Gates of Death until leaving Port Blacksand to make sure there was enough space for everything.
It all seemed OK (as it should as I'd measured everything first, lol!) and there was enough space for everything, so I thought I'd share the final piece it with other Fighting Fantasy fans to download and print to use in their own games if they wanted to bring a bit of old-school charm to the newest of new-school adventures!
