Last round robot commando was eliminated. No more sci-fi!

Masks for me. It's a book I really, really have to be in the mood for. Sometimes I like the whole mysterious, uncivilised wilderness atmosphere. Other times I think it feels a bit bland and empty.
It has other issues too. The best part is the Fallow Dale sequence but the whole reason for going there - obtaining the Horn of Hever - is likely to end in disappointment and isn't really worth the effort anyhow.
The plot is pretty good but not really told in a very dramatic way. And the difficulty is just absurd - tough dice rolls, counter-intuitive solutions and abrupt instant deaths abound.
I feel Deathmoor largely took much the same approach as Masks but eliminated a lot of the problems. Never really sure why that book has the worse reputation amongst fans.

Trial of champions for me, I just enjoy playing midnight rogue more, despite its obvious flaws. The others aren't really a consideration (yet!).

Top 10 easy. Its the epic ones that make fighting fantasy the magic universe it is. With just one exception, the best of all: HOUSE OF HELL.

Vagsancho and Razaak may have had a falling-out over vagsancho's little trips to the House of Drumer to watch the human sacrifices.

I can hardly believe what I'm reading! You could knock me down with a feather.

You keep putting Trial there. I'll keep voting.

You keep putting Rogue there, and so will I.

This is quite tricky as of the remainder, one is in my top 3, another is a favourite challenge, and there are four solid books - each with flaws.
Masks is the weakest of Waterfields remaining books given the uselessness of the horn and the golems not really appearing as a threat. I don't mind the alligator roll as a similar feature appears in other books. Has some great sections though.
Beneath Midnight Castle is the most consistent and has lots of replay, but it just doesn't appeal to me much.
Midnight Rogue is fun to play, but the skills are poorly implemented, the two "you cheat!" paragraphs are a bit childish, and being able to restart from 1 again is as annoying as it was in Forest of Doom - 3 instant death paragraphs would have been better.
Creature of Havoc becomes very dull once you escape the dungeon which is brilliantly constructed and written. The introduction annoys me as well as if I don't know who or what I am, why would I know all this stuff?
I may reconsider in a few days, but I think the second half of Creature makes it more inconsistent compared to the rest.

The sisters are fairly easy to find, but Grog isn't (as your instinct once in Coven is not to leave immediately), and without Grog, Creature is every bit as infuriating outside as it is in the dungeon. And all the false trails are still beautifully described and very imaginative. I love exploring the Testing Grounds and Dree and The Forest Of Spiders and the rest, even though I know I'm only going to doom myself with the Witches or the Treefolk or the Toadmen or the Gluevines or the Devil's Locks, or... there's so many varied and interesting ways to die in Trolltooth Pass, I could never, ever describe it as dull.

While I agree with all this, it is a pity that once you have Grog, you are pretty much led by the hand until the end of the book.

Which is what makes it dull - especially after the first half which has so much scope, despite a lot of it being down to a random roll. It is a very cleverly designed book, but it just doesn't feel as rewarding once you escape the dungeon - and the end game is boring at best...
