From TUFFF (Sept 2009)... ==Possible spoiler alert!==
OK, I'm reading this at the moment (as opposed to "playing" it!), and I have found the tomb (but got killed by the High Priestess after using the secret entrance - another matter entirely), but earlier on I couldn't work out the distance on the map without doing some "creative flicking". I got the translation from the scroll (I did visit the Shaman). But how do you work out the distance? Do you use the centres of the squares or whole squares? You're near an oasis right? Same oasis as on the map? I was thoroughly confused. My question is doubly embarrassing since I have a PhD in science! "Your progress has been watched, foul creature of destruction!"

From TUFFF... It's confusingly done.
The city of Tezra is the city in the bottom left. The alabaster quarries are the cliffs in the bottom row, 3 squares in from the right. Here's the annoying bit - by "the edge of the alabaster quarries", he means the square to the left of the quarries. So it's 3 squares from the city to the edge of the quarries - 3 squares = 30km, so 1 square = 10km.
The Gold Tunnels are the caves 2 up and 2 in from the right. The oasis is 4 squares above them. Since the tomb is in the mid-point between them, that means its 2 squares south of the oasis (which is the oasis you're at). So it's 20km away.

From TUFFF... Actually, on my reading I thought you could be at either the oasis square in the north-east or the temple square in the centre of the map. If you look at ref 5 of the book you have a choice of going to an oasis or the ruins of a temple, which seem to be pretty close together. Then ref 346 talks about you being in a temple. It doesn't actually matter, since either way Akharis tomb is 20km away from both the temple in the centre and the oasis in the north-east. I thought it was a bit ambiguous though as well.

From TUFFF... Thanks for that - but surely the Temple is SE, not south, of the Pillars? So the translation at 326 is wrong? "Your progress has been watched, foul creature of destruction!"

From TUFFF... Strictly speaking if I am right, then it is wrong, but really I think the 326 passage is just badly worded on a few things, and this might just be one of them. If you follow Akharis' trail from Tezra to his tomb it makes sense that the temple in the centre of the mapgrid is the one his cortege rested at - its near, and en route to, his final destination and in fact to move directly south of the pillars after reaching the edge of the quarry would require taking his majesty's mouldering meat-wrap a few squares back west. If there was a second Temple directly south of the pillars I'd also expect it to be marked out. But again, you can think of yourself as being at the oasis or at the temple and still find the tomb just fine.

From TUFFF... I hated this puzzle. I somehow managed to work out that the number was twenty, that kind of felt right, but it's a pretty poor example of a puzzle in my opinion. ~ Vae Victis! ~

From TUFFF... I've just grabbed a copy of CotM from eBay - £22. It's the cheapest I've seen it for a while but it still feels like a lot of money. /kicks self for not buying for £3.99 when it was first released

From TUFFF... I take it that's the Puffin edition - I've seen CotM in Wizard in Waterstones, Borders and Foyles in London for 5.99 ! "Your progress has been watched, foul creature of destruction!"

From TUFFF... Yeah, it's the second to last Puffin I needed to finish the set. Just waiting on my copy of Deathmoor to arrive from Australia Nice, I paid £27.50 for Deathmoor including P&P. Most I've ever paid for one... Not got Magehunter yet of course, but I was lucky enough to pick up CotM, KoD and RotV when they were first released. Well done! I only need 47 more to complete my Puffin set LOL! Hey, you're getting there man. Not long to go I'm sure ~ Vae Victis! ~

From TUFFF... Ouch! Those are nasty prices. I picked up CotM for NZ$6 (roughly £2.50) about a year ago. (328) Despite your best efforts, you find yourself decaying in front of a computer screen. Your adventure ends here.

From TUFFF (Feb 2011)... I received my author copies of the new edition of Curse of the Mummy today and I know I'm biased, but I think it looks great. Has anyone else had a chance to pick this up yet? What do you think of the pre-generated characters in the back? Jon Green

From TUFFF... Has anyone else had a chance to pick this up yet? I know Warren (Paltogue) has at least looked at the new edition, as he commented on the reused characters in the new version of "Forest of Doom" (which naturally has people wondering if Wizard has lost interest in the range already! *I'd have an eye-rolling face here but there isn't one to choose from on this forum*) (328) Despite your best efforts, you find yourself decaying in front of a computer screen. What do you think of the pre-generated characters in the back? It does indeed look great Jon. And I think the pre-generated characters are excellent (I had assumed that you were personally responsible for those - they have JG stamped all over them!). I especially liked the whip and fear of snakes references!

From TUFFF... Ta very much. I did indeed create the pre-gen characters for all of my gamebooks. I had nothing to do with those in any of the other books. Jon Green

From TUFFF... I've also got my new copy of Curse of the Mummy. While I hate that the cover artwork got shrunk to a tiny circle I must admit the colors are well chosen and fitting. Haven't played it yet - I'm up to # 47 The Crimson Tide right now - and I might never play that particular edition - keep it mint - because when I finally do it will be with the Wizard first edition! Great that you did your own pre-gen characters Jon, it's a nice touch. Speak in extremes, it will save you time.

Fantastic book! Magical book! Amazing Atmosphere! More one of the amazing books of Green. I prefer Howl of the Werewolf and Night of the Necromancer However.

This one is damn hard... I think J. Green has implemented a harcore mode in the FF series. His books are very difficult to win. I was never able to beat Curse of the Mummy and Bloodbones.

His post-Bloodbones books are a lot less harsh.

To me this is a never ending story. Strangely, it is also extremely complete and perfect to me.

Another one with a strong story, but rubbish gameplay. Was this once a policy with Jonathan Green, or what?

Still, credit has to be given for him actually listening to feedback and improving greatly in the gameplay aspect in his more recent books. I think one of the boffins on here was right in their assessment a long time ago where they identified the language as being of a very high standard in the early works but the gameplay was of sado-masochistic intensity.
The later works are still a joy to read but, to put it mildly, the effort expended on the gameplay renders them some of the strongest entries in the entire series. I particularly love Falstaff in Night of the Necromancer.
Hard to quantify but roughly
Early books: Use of language 9, gameplay 1
Later books: Use of language 8, gameplay 9

Yeah, I bet Falstaff from Shakespeare would go to pieces under Unthank's rule. So much for his old boastful bravado! The language shows Green has a classical education; using words like 'wine dark sea.' (Ancient Greek literal translation).
