I must admit I had forgotten about the 5 stamina loss option and this might well be a good option for a high stamina avatar. I was mistaken in saying it is a guaranteed 5 Stamina loss. 🤦🏻♂️ It is guaranteed 1 Stamina lost with a further 4 Stamina lost if you fail a Luck Test and get bitten by a Rattlesnake. Still worse off, Stamina-wise, than going East to meet the Herbalist and Ash where you will either break even or get an extra Stamina point.

I have always wondered if the Elfin boots should have a -1 luck penalty attached as they can be nothing more than an impediment.
You cannot reclaim the skill point the book so helpfully puts in place for you.

You cannot reclaim the skill point the book so helpfully puts in place for you. TLDR: Against all intuition the Elfin Boots are worth having except for top tier Skill 12 Adventurers when taking the Potion of Fortune! 😮
So if you are one of the few to get those Elfin Boots with a low Skill 12 or any Skill 11 adventurer then be happy.
The only thing you need Skill for after this point is the two Skill Tests with the Healer, which have the rather nasty penalties for failure of an instant Death and a practically impossible Banshee fight.
But considering you are likely to be on your last legs at this point perhaps the Stamina saved by missing out the Barbarian fight outweighs that.
I'll code up the probabilities for never having the Elfin Boots against always having them once you reach the Barbarian.
Now this is a surprise! With my best Potion of Fortune based strategies it is better to have the Elfin Boots unless you are one of the very finest specimens of adventurers. 😮😮😮
As a sanity check for the Skill 12 Stamina 17 Luck 7 adventurer when I leave out the Barbarian and Skill Tests, with all remaining Provisions gobbled up, I get just over 6.3% of Adventurers on 1 to 3 Stamina. (With 37.86% still alive!)
Expected stamina loss with a reduced Skill 11 in the Barbarian fight is about 2.9 Stamina so lets approximate about 6.1% of Adventurers die due to the Stamina lost fighting the Barbarian.
Now the chance of failing with reduced Skill 11 in the Skill Tests is about [1-(35/36)*(35/36)]*37.86% which is about 2.1% dying failing the Skill Tests. (Assuming the Banshee kills pretty much all those who fight her here.)
So the Elfin Boots should be about 4% better which they are.

It might make sense from both a gameplay and a narrative perspective for the Elfin boots to confer a +1 Skill bonus, which they might do in some hypothetical revised\alternative version of COTSW. I would think a luck penalty could be appropriate if they were Dark Elf boots (maybe -1 luck, +1 skill).
